Antennae for Design ~ How to Apply Gilding Wax

As you may have read, or have heard on the Sunday morning podcasts, my darling daughter Liv is engaged to be married to Matt O’Rourke. We’re so very happy for her and for Matt and are so very excited to have a new member of the family. I’ll post more about the upcoming wedding plans in future posts.

As you can imagine, an engagement is the perfect reason to spiff up a home and I’ve been working like mad painting interior rooms before the onset of the cold weather. Our dining room needs the most attention; the next steps are painting furniture, and making new curtains and slipcovers–these are all things I’ve wanted to accomplish for awhile and I am having so much fun with it all.

This pretty mirror was purchased awhile back with the intent of gilding the frame, and I was able to check it off my to-do list Saturday. Gilding wax comes in a little tub, but is so potent, that one little tub is sufficient for a hundred projects. A teeny weeny bit goes a very long way.

Cover fabrics and tabletops prior to gilding because the tiniest speck will smear into a great smudge.

Very lightly dab only the tip of your brush with the wax. Gently apply to the surface of the frame, lamp, or whatever you are gilding, and then spread with the brush. Optionally, I often use my fingertip for the spreading part. Go slowly and do small areas at a time. It only takes several hours to dry and if desired you can apply a second coat (I never do, one coat has always provided enough coverage).

Clean brushes and hands with mineral spirits. That’s it–no top coat needed.
