OK So I’ve Had My Windows 8 Touchscreen Laptop For Well Over A Year Now. Anybody wanna Guess How Many Times I’ve Touched The Screen?

Am I alone on this?

I feel like Microsoft built Windows 8 thinking that every device needed to be used in the same way- a desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone.  I don’t hate Windows 8 as much as when it first came out but I boot directly to the desktop now and avoid the metro UI at all costs.  All the laptops you buy now for Windows 8 are touchscreen.  Guess what?  I don’t want a touch screen laptop.  Sure, that’s alright for a tablet where you’re using it to mainly consume content but for a laptop or desktop where you are manipulating images and editing movies, I want real work tools which include a mouse and not a touch screen.

I haven’t touched the damn screen on my Windows 8 laptop unless it was inadvertently.   Am I alone on this?  Those of you with windows Laptops equipped with touchscreens, do you use the touch screen?  I’m not talking about tablets now, I’m talking about a touch screen enabled laptop.

The issue as I see it and I’ve said this from the first time I booted up a Windows 8 machine was that they dumbed down the laptop experience so it would integrate more seamlessly with the mobile and tablet platforms.  I would have preferred that they left the desktop operating  to be all out productive and powerful for content creators rather than dumbing it down for the tablet marketplace of media consumers.

Over a year in with Windows 8, given the chance I’d opt for a Windows 7 machine.  My favorite place to create content and edit for the blog is still on my desktop Windows 7 machine and it’s by a mile.  I can do things way more efficiently than any of the other devices or operating systems.

There’s talk of Windows 9 coming out soon, hopefully it will be closer to Windows 7 than Windows 8.

Hi Joey!

My name is Meghan Stratton and I’m Lara Lepionka’s new service member at Backyard Growers. Our major fall event starts tomorrow and will go for the next couple weeks, so we were hoping you could post about it on Good Morning Gloucester. Below is our logo and a quick blurb about the events. I’ve also attached a few pictures of the sunflowers, squash, and pumpkins from Veterans that we’ll be harvesting tomorrow. Let me know if there’s anything else I should send or if there are any problems.

Thank you!!

School Garden harvest time with Backyard Growers this month!

Throughout the district over 1,300 elementary school students will harvest the vegetables they planted last spring as part of Backyard Growers Fall Harvest Days. At Veterans’, Beeman, Plum Cove and East Gloucester, students will harvest pumpkins, beans, squash, carrots, beets, potatoes, and sunflowers. The next day, each school’s cafeteria staff will roast up some of the veggies for the children to sample during lunch time! Since West Parish students are currently without a garden we will host a special harvest event for them at Burnham’s Field in partnership with local farmers, Cape Ann Farmers Market, Cape Ann Art Haven, and Sawyer Free Library.

If you are a parent who would like to volunteer at your child’s school on the day of the harvest and/or on the day the harvest samples are served in the cafeteria please contact Meghan at meghan.stratton@foodcorps.org. Dates for each school are listed below:

9/10-9/11 Veterans

9/12 West Parish

9/15-9/16 Beeman

9/17-9/18 Plum Cove

9/25-9/26 East Gloucester

Walking tours on the HarborWalk

Year round, select one of three Gloucester MA HarborWalk walking tours

1) Self-guided, year round, free, public-access and award winning walkway. 42 story moment granite posts installed as a permanent outdoor exhibit. The reclaimed granite posts feature plaques highlighting the city’s past and contemporary cultural treasures. Gloucester’s maritime heritage, innovators in business, politics and the arts are all featured. The signs also provide suggestions for exploration elsewhere in Gloucester and there are QR codes which scan to additional content. It’s family friendly for all ages and accessible for all. Visit just one story moment marker or “hop-on, hop off” like a transit line. Follow a specific inner loop 1.2 miles or extend it for a nice, long walk (3 miles RT). It is designed to be flexible for any length or duration, and for educational and programming opportunities for community and visitors. It was designed by Cambridge Seven Associates. http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk atgharborwalk@gmail.com
cid:image019.jpg@01CFCC3B.40091EB0

2) Guided: a mini mobile tour that leads you to 14 story moments and is narrated by the coolest host ever, Gloucester singer, Ann Marie. You may know her work with Bandit Kings and elsewhere. The HarborWalk mobile guided tour –an American Alliance of Museums gold MUSE winner- can be downloaded ahead of time and brought along wherever you go. Loads of talented Gloucester creatives helped and/or featured.   You’ll be guided along a shorter trail (14 stops) by following Ann Marie to the Story Moment markers that include an extra sign, postcards lettered “A” through “N”. There are surprises within stores, public spaces, and businesses as you explore our community via the app’s activities. Along with the video introduction, the two short films, “HarborWalk Cinema”, can be viewed anytime, but reward a visit downtown with not to be missed interactive elements!  http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk atgharborwalk@gmail.com

3) Self–guided kids and family activity: Become a “Gloucester Explorer”

Any kid who hunts and finds each trail marker icon can receive a certificate signed by the Mayor for becoming an official “HarborWalk Explorer”. People can print out this 2-page tracing master sheet (see attached PDF) ahead of time from their own printer OR check at the Chamber or Stage Fort Welcoming Center for copies. http://www.ghwalk.org Contact: friends of the HarborWalk at gharborwalk@gmail.com

VIDEO: Len Burgess Stunning Crystal Light Etched Images at Salt Lake City Train Station

See this short video of a train station in Utah incorporating Len Burgess gorgeous ice crystal images, illuminated by colored LED lights.

Crystal Light transforms the two level environment of the Transfer Station of the UTA linking the new line to the airport with the existing commuter line. The dramatic weather of Salt Lake City is suggested in images of water in its different states: ice crystals, clouds, a rushing stream, gentle waves of the lake. These are etched into the glass windscreens and elevator tower to catch the sunlight during the day and at night color flows through the station with programmed lighting.

Len writes, “Some of my ice crystal photos are etched in a Salt Lake City train station. This Salt Lake City train station has been designed using etched glass and changing colored lighting. Here’s a new video of the station. Well known architectural designer Catherine Widgery designed this structure using water in it’s many forms as the theme.”

Mug Up and Rubber Duck Ransom Saga, Saturday 9:30 at Madfish Wharf

Last week’s Mug Up ended with Rubber Duck being taken hostage by a pair of adorable but vicious ducknappers. Come to Mug Up this Saturday at 9:30 to see how this drama plays itself out. Will Paul Morrison buckle under and give in to the hostage takers extreme demands to gain RD’s freedom, will RD remain imprisoned (or maybe totally forgotten about and relegated to the back of a closet), or will Paul Morrison pull off bringing a massive rubber duck to Gloucester harbor to float outside Joey’s window and stare relentlessly at him until his Flexilis anatidaephobia forces him to give up RD? Come to Madfish Wharf Saturday morning and find out.

Yesterday I took my first short walk with no support other than my legs. Occupational therapist Shelly came over, I handed her my camera, and told her I was going to walk. Well, I did, after seven and a half months of grave illness and much therapy. I traveled 21 steps, and I call that a winner – Blackjack!
