Good Morning Gloucester 
We had lots of these boxes with their slide in lids to play with growing up in the 50’s. They were great for storing treasures that had been found on the beach!

Oh boy ~ living in Maryland ~ was my Gloucester mother was thrilled when the grocery store down the road started carrying the Gorton’s salt cod. The box was probably 24″ x 18″. You could just pick what you needed from the box and purchase by the pound. From then on, Friday nights my father soaked the beans that cooked all day Saturday. Mother made codfish balls or codfish cakes, salad and warmed B & M bread ~ Saturday night dinner ~ every winter Saturday night.
Mother kept Gloucester alive for us until our summer return.

The Salted Cod box I used for this photo has pencil writing on the side, difficult to read, and was probably written by a child. Notice the claw marks on the right hand side of the cover. This box was used long after the fish was consumed.

I can remember these boxes in the North End in front of the shops. The fish was as dried as could be so I guess the one pound box would be a lot of fish.

Wish we would have been able to keep many of the items on the adventure westward – did keep some items but many items went up in the bus fire…But memories and the great times some pictures survived. My mother did say she used to have some the war ration books but there are plenty on line to view. 🙂

I seem to recall coming back from the Expo 67 in Montreal with the Burke family of Bass Ave – wonderful people, (they being kind enough to take me as company for their son Tim, we were both around 12-13 at the time) and having to hide boxes of dried cod like these so we wouldn’t have to pay for some kind of tax.
