The Gloucester Area Astronomy Club is pleased to host two wonderful presentations at the December 13 meeting, one by Steve Kolaczkowski, and another by Dr. Mario Motta. Steve K will open the meeting by showing us what’s in store for us in the winter sky, from planets to galaxies to star clusters and nebulae; Steve will be followed by Dr. Motta’s presentation on the strange journey of one of his giant telescope optics.
The large mirror, 1/3 the size of the Hubble primary (!), was designed as part of a satellite before it became the primary optic for Mario’s first big telescope. When he made another large telescope for his Gloucester observatory, Mario donated the mirror to a facility in Italy where it is now being used for spectroscopy.
Come on out and enjoy Mario’s remarkable optical saga, Steve’s fun and informative look at what’s up, and the usual (and some not so usual) good things to eat and drink, and great conversation.
The public is warmly invited. There are no dues or fees, and no special knowledge or equipment is needed to have a great time.
GAAC meets on the second Friday of the month at 8:00pm, at the Lanesville Community Center, 8 Vulcan Street, in the Lanesville neighborhood of Gloucester. More info can be found on the club website at http://gaac.us and on the club facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/gaacpage or on Twitter, @gaactweet.

I took a little break from work this afternoon and ran over to Jeff’s studio to have a look at his new work. I urge to go; you will not be disappointed. Jeff captures the beauty of Gloucester’s waterfront and neighborhoods with matchless skill and inimitable eye. The show runs from now through December 21st. Perfect timing–while there, I met Beverly residents Ricardo and Diana Fernandez, the proud new owners of Jeff’s Cape Pond Ice painting.
Scott Memhard, owner of Cape Pond Ice, with his lovely daughter Marie.
Jim Holscher, collector of Jeff Weaver paintings, perusing the bins.
Tomorrow night look for my latest mini film ~ Macklemore LIVE performing “Can’t Hold Us,” which I filmed at the Xbox Release Party at Best Buy Theatre in New York City this past Thursday Night!

Ken Duckworth led the book discussion on The Book: On the Taboo of Knowing Who You Are, written by Alan Watts, for the Eastern Point Lit House and Duckworth’s co-hosted last event of the season. Ken shared several Alan Watts, Trey Parker, and Matt Stone animated videos.
Alan Wilson Watts (6 January 1915 – 16 November 1973) was a British-born philosopher, writer, and speaker, best known as an interpreter and populariser of Eastern philosophy for a Western audience. Born in Chislehurst, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began Zen training in New York. Pursuing a career, he attended Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, where he received a master’s degree in theology. Watts became an Episcopal priest then left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies.
Watts gained a large following in the San Francisco Bay Area while working as a volunteer programmer at KPFA, a Pacifica Radio station in Berkeley. Watts wrote more than 25 books and articles on subjects important to Eastern and Western religion, introducing the then-burgeoning youth culture to The Way of Zen (1957), one of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), Watts proposed that Buddhism could be thought of as a form of psychotherapy and not a religion. He also explored human consciousness, in the essay “The New Alchemy” (1958), and in the book The Joyous Cosmology (1962).
Towards the end of his life, he divided his time between a houseboat in Sausalito and a cabin on Mount Tamalpais. His legacy has been kept alive by his son, Mark Watts, and many of his recorded talks and lectures are available on the Internet. According to the critic Erik Davis, his “writings and recorded talks still shimmer with a profound and galvanizing lucidity.”
As part of his growing popularity Matt Stone and Trey Parker—creators of the animated series South Park—have also contributed a video tribute by animating some of his lectures. This has spawned a culture of user-animated videos all around the net.

Kathy owned and operated White Bird Gallery on Rocky Neck for many years where she sold her fine art photographs. Separate from her gallery, she also sells her work commercially to hospitals and hotels.
Above are some of the work she will have at the Rocky Neck Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Show. Her images of flowers are typically produced on a very large scale but for this event she plans to produce them smaller, making them a more affordable gift possibility.
Kathy is on the Board of The Rocky Neck Art Colony and The Goetemann Residency Program here in Gloucester. She is also a member of The Copley Society of Boston, The Cambridge Art Association and The Kingston Gallery in Boston’s South End, where she will have a show in February of 2014. http://www.Kathleengerdonarcher.com
You can see more of Kathy’s work at The Cultural Center at Rocky Neck, 6 Wonson Street, East Gloucester during the Rocky Neck Holiday Art & Fine Crafts Festival
The opening of Hatley Ferguson’s Salt Water: Paintings by Hartley Ferguson was held November 22 at a new showcase for local artists. Essen’s Bakery owner Toby Gado is showcasing Harley Ferguson’s work following the opening reception “Art After Dark”. The artist has always lived by the sea from summers on Fisher’s Island to more than 30 years living in Gloucester and now her present location in the Basque Country in Northern Spain.
Although she has primarily been a figurative painter, the water and swimmers in this exhibit have been a recurring focus combining her love of the water and swimming with her love of the human form. While not self portraits, many of these paintings grew out of her experiences under, through and in the water.
Inquires may be made to and paintings purchased from the artist’s agent Sue Henderson, (978) 828-3826 or sueartistsagent@yahoo.com . A portion of the proceeds from painting sales will be donated to the Colleen Ritzer Memorial Scholarship Fund in Danvers.

Vickie and I are honored to announce a gimmeLIVE concert series beginning on the Winter Solstice, Saturday, December 21, 2013 to help the Gloucester UU Church raise money for Meetinghouse restoration, with the goal being that the Meetinghouse becomes one of Gloucester’s premier concert and performance venues.
This is one of our City’s most cherished landmarks, it’s lantern steeple with a bell crafted by Paul Revere having guided mariners into port for over 200 years. The acoustics are excellent and the Meetinghouse currently seats about 300 people. One major goal is to renovate the balcony, which will increase capacity to 525. More restoration info here.
We will feature top Gloucester talent in this very special holiday concert:
Stay tuned to GMG for more details. You know FOBs will hear it first!

You shall be entitled to 30% of the total funds while the rest will be given to me on arrival in your country for the up keeping of my only son and for further investment under your kind control there in your country as I can not be able to do any investment here in West Africa due to the origin of the said fund. I will not fail to bring to your notice that this business is risk free and doesn’t have any negative implication. You should not entertain any fear as all modalities for the smooth and easy transfer of this fund have been finalized. Peggy Russell, owner of the POP Gallery across the street, delivered this homemade soup to me, knowing that I wasn’t feeling so great. All natural, and full of delicious vegetables, as you can see. After heating, I ate it all. Thanks Peg, it’s nice to know there are people like you loose on this planet.
