Rare chance to see Dennis Brennan (one of Boston’s best rockers) with Dave Sag @ Rhumb Line tonight

Dennis Brennan @ gimmesound GiveBack Benefit
TT The Bears, October 2009

The fact that Dennis Brennan isn’t a huge star proves that music business executives are clueless.  Dennis was one of the first Boston area artists to make a gimmesound profile when we launched 4 years ago this month (see it here).  The first song he uploaded was Sugar Falls (listen here) and when we heard it, the whole office jumped up and danced and all agreed,  “He’s gotta be in our very first benefit show!”  (still producing benefits)

The next October, we produced our first GiveBack benefit show at TT’s in Cambridge featuring Dennis Brennan and other Boston stars.  Here’s what James Buhrendorf had to say about Dennis at that show, “Dennis Brennan was the cool driving force of the night. Fedora, coat, black jeans and boots, slinging an upside down lefty acoustic sluiced through a Fender amp…after 40 years on the Boston/Cambridge music scene, Young Mr. Brennan still tears it up. We’re talking genuine gritty alt-roots rockers, and tear out your heart sweetness and sorrows.  … ” (see the full article here).

Here’s a short video featuring all the performers that night: Elle Gallo, Dennis Brennan, Sarah Rabdau and the Elastic Waste Band (members of Morphine with Jeremy Lyons):

Don’t miss your chance to see Dennis Brennan tonight at Rhumb Line with Dave Sag, Matt Stubbs and Chris Rivelli.  Show starts at 8pm.

Joey, Frankie, Ryan, Noah and Bradley From The Farm, Rick Doucette, Camp Spindrift Volunteers and all the dodge-ballers,

Another amazing year of colored balls, outstanding fashion and questionable judgment for the common good.  You and your team put on a fantastic event and I dearly love the energy, passion and effort that goes into this epic affair.  Next Step is so honored to be the the beneficiary of the magical mayhem that was the 2013 Speedo and Bikini Dodgeball Tournament.  Your contribution will allow for over 100 hours of programming for teens and young adults battling life-threatening illness.  Thank you from all of us at Next Step.

Tide comes in… on a new shore

You can’t keep a good tide down.

Even before the doors had closed on Time & Tide Fine Art’s downtown Ipswich gallery, the wheels were turning on the next incarnation of the popular gallery.

A new partnership between Time & Tide’s Kristina Brendel and Post Road Framers in the Rowley Marketplace center will create a gallery within the frame shop.

Opening April 1 with the exhibition “On a New Shore,” Brendel is preparing to curate exciting collections of original work by local fine artists.

An opening reception will celebrate the new collaboration on Saturday, April 6 from 5-7pm.

“I’ve become more and more impressed by the depth of the talent in this area,” Brendel says. “We have artists producing work here that rivals any big city gallery. As a matter of fact, many of the artists I work with show their work in Boston, too.”

Time & Tide will present a new show each month, alternating group shows with solo and duo exhibitions.

For more information, contact Kristina Brendel viakristina@timeandtidefineart.com or 978 238 8848.

Woodcarving With David Calvo

February 25, 2013

Ask David Calvo if he thinks woodcarving is a dying art and he’ll cut through the suggestion like a bandsaw through birch. By Andrew Conway- photograph by Joel Laino

“I’ve taught students from every state, as well as Canada and Mexico,” he says, referring to his ever-growing network of passionate craftsmen and women who come to his renowned woodcarving and sculpture studio and school in Gloucester to learn the ancient art for themselves.

I was just thinking.  Wouldn’t that be great to have a collection of wood carved figurines of dudes with huge penises all over the house.

Uhmmmm, no.

Bob Franke

Bob Franke’s songs are considered classics, fueled by his deep faith and the real-life lessons taught him by his 30-odd years of playing everywhere from concert halls to street corners. Bob has appeared in concert at coffeehouses, colleges, festivals, bars, streets, homes and churches in 33 states, four Canadian provinces and England. His concerts have appeared in lists of the top five musical events of the year chosen by critics in the Boston and San Francisco Bay areas. In 1990, he was nominated as an Outstanding Folk Act by the Boston Music Awards.

Consider this list: Peter, Paul and Mary; David Wilcox; John McCutcheon; Sally Rogers; Lui Collins; Garnet Rogers; June Tabor. These well-known artists (and many more) all sing and record Bob’s music. Seasoned veterans and novices alike are drawn to the complex, warm-hearted spirituality and captivatingly clear-cut melodies of Franke’s songs.

“It’s his integrity. I always think of Bob as if Emerson and Thoreau had picked up acoustic guitars and gotten into songwriting. There’s touches of Mark Twain and Buddy Holly in there, too.”

– Tom Paxton

John Schindler

Originally from Saint Louis Missouri, John was influenced early on by that town’s rhythm and blues and his Oklahoma mother’s singing. This funky start was drastically tempered by a nine-year stint in a Catholic seminary where silence and Gregorian chant were his daily bread. After leaving the brotherhood, and armed only with his vow of poverty, John moved to New England and pursued the path of an itinerant musician, playing in sundry bands and bad barrooms. It was during this time, he realized, that his audience could not understand Latin.

Winner of both the 2003 Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and the 2006 Rose Garden Coffeehouse Song Contest, John has also been a finalist in many other song contests.

“John Schindler is full of wonderful, insightful songs that will find their way into the repertoire of other folksingers. John’s songs really connect!”

RD Tech Tip: Credit Card Swipers for Your Small Cape Ann Shop

EJ asked me about credit card swipers and I think we both knew about the same amount. That there were two out there that worked easily on smartphones. PayPal Reader and The Square. (Click either for signup and more info.)

The Square on the left and PayPal Reader on the right
The Square on the left and PayPal Reader on the right

So it’s 2013 and Rubber Duck thinks it is time for all the galleries and small shops to get one of these if they are still using the old paper ka-chunk machine for credit card transactions. Even the old phone swipe machines are old technology and slow. Are you going to lose sales if you don’t upgrade? Maybe. Crowded shop on Saturday and you want to spend time with the customers and they don’t want to wait in line while you either ka-chunk or use the telephone to call in a card.

Rubber Duck recommendations. What you need:

1) Smartphone. Android or iPhone both can use them. You probably already have one or you already know if you are an iPhone person or an Android person. Joey likes Androids, I like iPhones, personal choice. (Do make sure your phone version is new enough. It likely is.) There is a caveat to the iPhone. It is very easy to turn an iPad into a cash register. If you have wireless in your shop that iPad is a cash register and a credit card swiper. Clear all the old tech away and you may not need the smartphone.

2) PayPal Reader or The Square. Kind of a toss up. Both are dead simple to use once you have given them all your documentation. Rates are 2.75% or 2.7%. I hope everyone picks both then complains about the percent. Competition will drive it to a more reasonable 1.85% of the old ka-chunk. But that extra one percent is worth the convenience.

One caveat: If you already have a PayPal commercial account as a collection source I would look at their set-up first. If you are really pinching pennies The Square rebates the ten bucks you paid for it. And the deals you can get on smartphones are pretty decent lately. You don’t need the newest model iPhone 5. You can get the iPhone 4S for 99 cents when you sign the two year deal. Same kind of deals on Androids since the wicked awesome Samsung Galaxy S4 that tracks your eyeballs is coming out the S3 is/will be cheap.

Will I buy lobsters from Joey with a swipe next to the scale? Sometimes cash is the handiest and 2.7% would pay for a few rubber boots. But transactions in a gallery where the tourista only has a card and not much time, it’s a good fit. It only takes one extra impulse purchase per month to easily cover the cost.

Imagine you have a card table in front of the store with mugs. Someone walking by likes one. Swipe right there, they sign the phone with their finger, and done.

Many, many thanks to the Carl and Marie Silva Family for sharing their story about the origins of their altar, family traditions and celebrations for the St. Joseph Film Project. As are all the altars, Marie’s is beautiful, and I especially love the added touch of the vine covered trellis.
