Cape Ann Talent Will Be In Full Force at The Weekend’s Festival By The Sea
This Saturday’s Festival By The Sea is expected to draw crowds of visitors excited to experience the best of the Cape Ann art, music, and food scenes in downtown Manchester by the Sea. With art and food vendors extending from Town Hall Common, through town center and down to Masconomo Park, there will be something for everyone. From painters and photographers to jewelers and crafters, visitors will have the opportunity to shop the local arts at a variety of price points.
While taking in the work of local artists, visitors will be treated to a special afternoon of live music on 2 stages. The Town Hall stage will feature soloists and duos including Charlee Bianchini, Janice Fullman with Izzy Attenborough, Bradley Royds, Joe Wilkins, and local music staple, Dan King. According to Co-chair and Musical Director, Chris Langathianos, “each musician will play about a 45 minute set.” He added, “we really wanted the opportunity to feature as much of the local talent as possible. I don’t think a lot of people recognize how lucky we are to live on the North Shore – Cape Ann, in particular. If you love live music, you’d be hard pressed to find anywhere else in New England with the depth of talent that we have on Cape Ann.”
The waterfont stage in Masconomo Park with feature a separate lineup of musicians, including Henry Allen & The New Swingset, Just Like Newman, The Dejas, Marina Evans with Jack Tomiaolo, and Chris Phillips. The day will end with an extra special, 2-hour finalé concert by The Chelsea Berry Band from 6 to 8pm.
Speaking of the evening’s finalé concert, Langathianos said, “This is one of the things that the Festival committee really set out to do when we created this event – we wanted to cap it off with a special, family-friendly, musical event in Masconomo Park. We were very fortunate to sign on Chelsea Berry and her band fresh off of opening up for Chris Isaak at The North Shore Music Theatre last month. She is a gifted songwriter and performer and she is backed by a top notch band that includes, Michael Thomas Doyle, Pete Iannitto, Michael Feingold, and Renee Dupuis.”
The Festival came together pretty quickly when it was announced that The Manchester Arts’ Festival was taking a hiatus in 2012. A group of local residents came together and formed a committee to explore creating a new event that would bring visitors to town to support local businesses while shopping from local artists and hearing the music of local musicians. With the support of the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Festival By The Sea was born.
Co-Chair, Michael Storella said, “we felt that a summer festival in Manchester was essential, not just for the businesses in town, but it has also become a summer rite of passage. We were troubled by the thought of a summer without an event like this in town.” After some quick preliminary planning and a speedy approval by the Board of Selectment, a date was set and the wheels were in motion. Storella added, “we were able to get things moving along quickly thanks to the instant support of Singleton Plumbing & Heating, who immediately stepped up with a generous donation to get the event off the ground. That coupled with the support of The Chamber of Commerce and local businesses made this event possible.”
The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, August 4th from 11am to 8pm. Artists will be set up from 11am to 6pm and from 6 to 8pm, action will shift to Masconomo Park for the Chelsea Berry concert. Event maps and music schedules will be available at local shops at the end of the week or by visiting www.facebook.com/festivalbythesea.
All this talk about music lately…………..
All this talk about music lately…………..
Thanks too Peter and Vickie all this talk about the local music scene had me thinking about all the concerts I’ve been to. Aerosmith in 1979 at the old Garden is a one I won’t forget. Plus the crazy ride there on the “Concert Train”, buying Bootleg T-shirts and watching the bootleg t-shirt guys get busted. The concert was great but you could see they were having problems during the show. Drug induced, I’m sure. The next nights concert they cancelled and there was a riot in Boston and the green line station was destroyed. I found this full concert on youtube. Isn’t modern technology awesome?
Ben Macadam’s paintings at Alchemy
At the grand opening for “The Hive”, I found my self seated next to Ben Macadam, one of our up-and-coming Gloucester artists. He mentioned that he has work on display at Alchemy (3 Duncan Street) for a little while yet (until August 5, I believe?). Since someone recently gave me a gift card for Alchemy’s, I trotted on down there for lunch on Sunday and snapped some photos.
These are not all the paintings, of course – you need to go down to see them yourself!
As I ate snapped photos and ate my delicious “native corn bisque” soup, I was entertained by great bluegrass music! It turns out that it was Flynn Cohen and a guest musician; Cohen plays there every Sunday with other musicians that he invites.

Here’s Your Move Regarding Teeth Whitening
I drink coffee. Lots of coffee.
How to keep the pearly whites staying pearly white after drinking all that coffee? No need to get expensive dentistry teeth whitening treatments. That’s for suckas.
Floss, use Arm and Hammer Advanced White toothpaste with peroxide and follow up by swishing some hydrogen peroxide around in your mouth for thirty seconds after you floss and brush in the morning and before you go to bed.
The big jug of Hydrogen Peroxide at CVS was $1.49 and will last you a long while.

Satch Kerans Band Plays For Project Sunshine
Some of my best memories were listening to Satch Kerans as lead singer of The Catalinas at The Kaloust house for our 3rd of July Bash’s we used to have.
Satch’s new band The Satch Kerans Band played for a great cause in Project Sunshine
Satch writes-
Hi Joe - this is a link to an article about a benefit we played for Project Sunshine. Project Sunshine provides funding for summer recreation activities for the children of 157 homeless families who have been placed in hotels or motels in Danvers. It’s an incredibly important cause.

Home for the summer
By Kathy McCabe
Globe Staff / July 29, 2012
The cool spray of the fire hose soaked youngsters in the noon sun at the annual Fireman’s Muster, one of the hottest events of summer at Endicott Park.
Hundreds of kids from the town’s playgrounds and recreation programs descended on the park’s wide, green fields for a day of old-fashioned firefighting fun.
“We’re going to get, in the end, soaking, soaking wet,” said 10-year-old Isabel, dripping wet in a bright yellow T-shirt with “Sunshine Club” printed on the back.
The finale featured kids and counselors frolicking in a giant pile of sudsy fire foam, the ’50s hit “Splish Splash” blaring over the public address system.
“You look good in a beard,” said Tereza, 12, giggling as she lathered up the face of Chris Roy, director of Project Sunshine.
“You think so?” said Roy, breaking into a smile.
Project Sunshine, a free summer recreation program for homeless kids living in Danvers hotels, has become it’s own shining star. Over the past two summers, the program has received a statewide honor, attracted nearly $40,000 in private funding, and won the hearts and hands of volunteers from Danvers to Marblehead to Brockton.
“It’s a communitywide effort, with a tremendous outpouring of volunteerism,” said Town Manager Wayne Marquis. “I think people feel proud that their town cares enough to reach out to our residents who are in need. You can count me in that group.”

Crazy Fiesta Hat Ladies go to the Lowell Folk Festival
Amy Clayton writes-
Hey Joey,
My sister Robyn and I just came from a weekend at the Lowell Folk Festival sharing our crazy Fiesta hats. We were invited by the curator of festival. The theme of the festival was from head to toe and we were honored to be invited. But we couldn’t just go with our hats and expect people to understand what we do, so we had to bring St.Peter’s Fiesta with us…lol. We brought with us a 5ft statue of St. Peter ( my sister made) a wooden cut out of St.Peter that people could take pictures with and many pictures on foam board of the different aspects of the fiesta. I handed out over 350 Gloucester visitor guides and St.Peter pins. We had so much fun and people were in awe of our community celebration and of course the hats.
I am emailing you this to see if you could share this with GMG viewers, I wish I had thought of it before we went, a press release was sent to the newspaper but they nothing went in. So I was thinking you could let people know about our great opportunity to share our great community with people from all over.
Here is the website that had a write up about us…. http://www.lowellfolkfestival.org/crafts.html, and I included some pictures.

Performance Sock Review Fox River Stay-Dry Sock Liner
When working around the lobster tanks all day long during the summer I don’t wear my heavy winter muck boots which keep everything super dry. I wear lower cut boots which inevitably get water splashed inside them and my feet sweat due to the heat.
So I was in Nelson’s buying some new work gloves and stumbled upon these FoxRiver sock liners which claim to wick and dry your feet.
At $5.98 a pair I didn’t want to buy too many just in case it was a gimmick.
If you suffer from having damn uncomfortable wet feet all day long that these sock liners work the nuts.
Dry and comfy and that makes my days a whole lot more comfy when I’m on my feet all day long.
Well worth the $5.98. I bought two more pairs this morning.

Mass Bay Junior Olympics at Annisquam Yacht Club
Today Annisquam Yacht Club is quiet, but two weeks from now – watch out!
The Annisquam Yacht Club will be hosting the 2012 Mass. Bay Junior Olympic Sailing Festival on August 13-15. US Sailing’s Junior Olympic Sailing Program is a nationwide series of regattas for youth ages 8 to 21. Each event in this family of regattas is hosted by a different club or organization, but all events share a common goal: to promote the enjoyment of sailing and development of skills to young sailors as well as provide an Olympic pathway for talented junior sailors.
Events mix Olympic-style competition with elements of learning and fun for all levels–from beginning racers to those with Olympic aspirations. In 2012, 30 events are planned in the continental United States and Hawaii and over 4,500 sailors expected to participate. Junior Olympic Sailing is coordinated by US Sailing and sponsored nationally by West Marine and Gill.
The Annisquam Yacht Club will be welcoming sailors aged 8-18 in the Optimist, Laser Radial, and Club 420 classes, and expect more than 300 sailors to participate in this exciting and fun-filled event!
Registration is now open and available online via Regatta Network. For help with registration, contact support@regattanetwork.com.
Grace Papp, 15, has been sailing since she was 7. This is her third year crewing 420’s – she handles the spinnaker and jib. Grace loves sailing and sails all day everyday during the summer. She is the only girl who is going to the overnight away regattas.
