Rome: Day One

It’s 11:18PM here and I’m about ready to turn in.

Everything people had told me about Rome has so far not been true, except that the food is great.
People said it wasn’t clean. I’ve found it to be very clean for a big city. People said it wasn’t safe and that people would be trying to rob you blind. I’ve felt safe everywhere I’ve gone even out by myself down some dark alleyways to get some night shots for you guys.

I’m starting to think that these stereotypes are from people who never travel and have a heart attack if a street vendor approaches them and they feel insecure about how to handle the street urchins.

Anyway maybe Rome used to be that way the same way New York was before Giuliani kicked the bums out. I don’t ave a point of reference for Rome 10 years ago but I know NYC is infinitely cleaner and safer now than it was 15 years ago.

My goal in these photo is to make you feel like you are right here with me.  Hopefully the photos will draw you in.  You can click the pictures for the larger versions.  All the photos are straight out of the camera.  I dont have my computer to tweak them.

Here are some captures from today-

    1. I was just in Cafe Sicilia today marveling at the lobster tails. They are beautiful and those countless layers of pastry! I am impressed (but not surprised) you make your own.

  3. Second image is the best picture I’ve seen you take! The statue’s face is in dark shadow and the dude at the base of the monument looks really depressed. The light on his face is great. Love the composition, background, everything works as a BxW. Let’s see more street images!

  4. Had a great trip to northern Italy a few years ago. Nobody spoke English, and I spoke about four words of Italian. It was a little awkward, bu no matter. Italy is a wonderful place. I can’t wait to return. Have a great trip.

  5. Joey,
Thanks for allowing us GMG FOBs to live vicariously thru you. Keep the excellent photos coming!
That b&w of the Mrs. is such a classic! She looks like a movie star at a photo shoot. (she always looks like a movie star but that’s beside the point 😉 )
Those lobsta tails look totally over the top decadent – how many total calories are in that picture?

  8. How come we’re not seeing any fancy new GMG sticka representation in Italy. I’m sure you can get Jill to hold up a sticka for one shot for the home team.

  11. There is no place like Italy! I’m rather partial though having lived and worked there many many moons ago. If I could live anywhere, it would be Italy, enjoy and it well! “Watch out for gli zingari”, (the gypsies) the stone carvers where I worked would warn me when the gypsies came to town. “They will take you!”, and low and behold, they did! Quite the adventure into a real gypsie caravan. Wonderful warm people if you get to know them and all is well. Enjoy the people, flavors, colors and keep sending pictures. Love em! Thanks for sharing your journey.
