Next stop the Mapparium and then Devil Duck wants to make a phone call To Mary Baker Eddy! Bad Duck.

Greetings!

Essex Pride is back!  It’s time to celebrate our town and everything that makes it great!  Let’s kick off Essex Pride Week the good old fashioned way: with Pride Awards and  a kickass dance!

Come to the Essex Room at Woodman’s on Saturday, November 12 at 7PM to celebrate with friends and family, recognize past Essex Pride recipients and honor the 2011 winners.

There will be snacks at 7PM, as well as a cash bar.  Awards will be announced at 8PM, followed by dancing to music by the Johnny Ray Band until 11PM.  This is an event not to be missed!

Tickets are $20 PP.  Sponsor a table of ten for $180, a savings of $20.

The Woodman Scholarship Committee is also selling 50/50 raffle tickets for $20 each.  The winner will be drawn that evening and the cash prize may be as high as $10,000!

Well, I’m drunk again and basically a pain to meet on the streets of this basically clean city. So, in keeping with my private zoo, may I introduce Mr. Greg Luttrell? This guy is the coolest kat that is what am. Prune juice magnate, uvula waggler, and glitarist nonpareil, this Teen Beat star is sure to melt the enamel offa yer incisors. No assembly needed. Safe when used as directed. Former hellion of the Michigan Black Snake band, Greg has seen it all, sometimes in 3-D. One of our more welcome infestations. You need this!
Giving our  dry cells a much needed jump start will be that Irish skinmaster: Mr. “Molto” Benny Benson, curator of the groove. Mr, Greg T. , on catarrh ,and myself  provide the jumper cables.  Don’t tell anybody!
And I’m getting tired of saying it, but Sunday nite I’m playing in Nbpt. at Glenn’s Cool Bar and Restaurant with the Justin Quinn band. The food is fabulous, and the band’s pretty good, too.6 to 9: make a reservation:It’s worth it!
Im getting outa this cast next week. It’s killing me! 6 weeks of torture! Anybody willing to drive me to Nbpt . on sunday??

Dogs up for Adoption- Greyson & Zoey

Mary Lou of All Dog Rescue has two beautiful dogs that she is fostering in Gloucester that are up for adoption. Greyson & Zoey are absolutely gorgeous! I have always had a soft spot in my heart for pit pulls, they get such a bad rap but all of the pit bulls I have ever met are just big cuddle bugs! Let’s help these two find their forever home.

About Greyson: 

“OK, by now you know from Greyson’s pictures that he is an extremely handsome boy. But what you don’t know is that he is as sweet and wonderful on the inside as well. He is new to rescue and we are still getting to know him but we have discovered he loves car rides, toys, playing with other dogs, cuddles and his walks. He has beautiful sparkling amber eyes, beautiful blue/grey fur and a wiggly butt and tail that is constantly going. He is fun, sweet, playful and affectionate. He weighs about 55 pounds and is around 2 years old. Athletic outside, calm and mannered inside the house. He likes to please so will likely be a quick learner. He adjusted very quickly to his new surroundings which is an indication of his adaptability and calm nature. To be the best dog he can be he will need a leader that will help socialize him and re-direct his enthusiasm when new people come to visit. This handsome Blue Pit Bull is waiting patiently for his forever home. He will make a wonderful companion in life. Because of his size, he is best in a household without young children.”

About Zoey:

“Zoey was found tied to the air conditioner shaft outside the pound and quickly became the staff favorite. She is a sweetheart with those real ‘puppy dog eyes’.  She enjoys playing with other dogs, car rides, toys and well, pretty much anything. She is one of those dogs that just enjoys being with her person. She would benefit with some basic training to make her the best dog she can be (as would any dog). She crates well, is housetrained, weighs in at 39 pounds.  She is soft and cuddly and speaking of cuddles can give and receive them all day long. She is being fostered with Greyson another of our dogs and doing very well-even though she is a bit of a prima-donna. She enjoys being the center of attention and needs to learn no matter how cute she is that she must share. She was in the pound for 2 months before we were able to take her. Be prepared for people to stop you on the street if you get this one, she is one of those dogs people just have to pet. She’s a real charmer!!”

Gloucester Harbor Village, 1856

The Gloucester Harbor Village map was a small inset on a larger map, A Topographical Map of Essex County Massachusetts, which measured 62 inches x 62 inches. It was a wall, or scroll map, and was printed on linen and hand colored. The surveys and map were made by civil engineer Henry Francis Walling (1825-1888),  Superintendent of State  Map. Some of the 49 insets, which were approximately 5 inches  x 9 inches, were Annis Squam Village, Lanes Ville, Rockport Village, and Pigeon Cove Village (which I have). Interesting features of the Gloucester Harbor Village map include: Canal Street (the Boulevard) and the long Cordage Mill (rope factory); Fort Defiance at the end of Peach Street (The Fort); Front, Spring, and Jackson Streets running the length of the Gloucester waterfront (no Rogers Street yet); Rocky Neck with it’s first wharf – the Walen Story Wharf; and the end of the railroad line is in Gloucester. Also significant is the now non-existent Vincent’s Cove, and Five Pound Island, which is now the terminus of the State Fish Pier.

Cape Pond Ice in NYC and the Marathon

Hello Joey,

Thought you might get a kick out of this.

My daughter Stephanie Cornell ran the NYC Marathon yesterday—her first.  I had my iPad fired up and open to the ING NYC Marathon website so I could track her progress on the map.  At the same time I was following along on my iPhone in Google Maps StreetView so I could see something of what she was seeing as she ran, although in photos taken some time ago.  From mile 15 to 16 the runners cross the Queensboro Bridge then turn north on 1st Avenue .  As she crossed East 86th Street I was surprised to see a StreetView photo of a Cape Pond Ice Truck at 86th and 1st.   I took this reminder of home sweet home as a good omen. 

Although she didn’t quite meet her goal of doing the Marathon in less than five hours—mostly due to having to run through the pain of a couple of previous injuries—she was delighted to have finished in 5:41:48 and got many cheers and kudos from friends and family.  She said that at one point she entertained the idea of taking the subway to the finish.  I’d have taken the subway from the other side of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge at mile two.  Bravo Stephanie!

The infamous one follows up with this –

joey – here’s a piece from the 1909 sanborn insurance map that shows where the parkhurst and burnham railways were in relation to each other.  few years earlier than the pilot boat pix, but the layout of the inner harbor didn’t change that much until urban renewal.  fyi, around 2005, some internet angel posted a complete set of the cape ann sanborn maps, from 1885-1917 in pdf format.  i downloaded them and have been using them ever since.  gave copies to the gloucester archives and sfl, and converted them to grayscale tifs for my own research purposes.  museum has these on board as well as the original full color hand-annotated atlases (that weigh about 50 pounds each!)  you want to know how this place has changed over the years?  never mind the pretty pictures, go to the maps.  they tell the story like nothing else can.

last month a nice chap named dave bennis came in to see me at the museum.  he was one of the volunteer crew on the ‘highlander sea’ (nee ‘pilot’) when she came into our port and wanted to see if we had any photos of the vessel in her days as a pilot boat in boston.  we found a few and here’s one taken of her by gordon thomas in 1960 on parkhurst railways for some work.  just so she wouldn’t feel lonely, i found another one of ‘roseway’ (pilot boat #2) on gloucester marine railways in the mid 50s.  dave’s gone back to his day job as lighthouse keeper in the upper peninsula of michigan, but i hope he sees these and comes back to visit us again.
