Gloucester At Night Photos From Terry Weber
Last night I was testing my new camera, the Powershot S95 (recommended by Joey), and I wanted to see if it took good night photos. For the most part it did the job, but at some points, the flash was actually too bright, and altered the mood of the picture. (I need to learn the advanced settings on the camera).
The church is the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church and the man fishing is a new kid in town, Brendan from Wakefield. He moved to Gloucester for the fishing and the beaches. I asked him if he wanted to take the cigarette out of his mouth, but he said, "Smokers are people too." 🙂 It does add a certain character to the picture.

CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL MUSIC in Annisquam
Sunday, August 28, 7:30 PM Annisquam Village Church
The historic Annisquam Village Church presents Jacqueline Schwab, renowned pianist of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary series, in a program entitled “150 Years Ago….” commemorating the Sesquicentennial year since the War between the States. Schwab performs music of period, sharing the evening with Celtic musician, Michael O’Leary and a vocal set by the women’s a capella group, ‘Leven, directed by Kristina Martin.
Chosen by the film maker Ken Burns for both the skill and the emotional content of her work, Jacqueline Schwab has performed on the soundtracks for the Grammy award-winning Civil War, the Emmy award-winning Baseball and Mark Twain, and the recent series on National Parks: America’s Best Idea, among others. She performed at the White House for President Clinton in 1997 to celebrate Burns’ Lewis and Clark series and also at the Smithsonian in 2000 to celebrate its exhibition on The Presidency. In May, 2009, she accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on the "Late Show" with David Letterman. She has played on over forty recordings.
Underscoring the Cape Ann connection with this repertoire, Michael O’Leary, singer and Celtic musician, comes ashore from the Thomas E. Lannon to join Schwab for several numbers, and the a capella songsters of ‘Leven, under Kristina Martin’s direction, will perform three favorites from the Civil War repertoire.
The Annisquam Village Church is an 1820’s building with remarkable acoustics, standing at the head of Lobster Cove (820 Washington Street in Gloucester) only footsteps away from a Civil War monument to 19 Cape Ann men. At least two houses in the Village are said to have been part of the underground railroad during the war, one with a tunnel leading to the Annisquam River.
The concert is the second in this summer’s series dedicated to the memory of the late Houston/Annisquam artist Colin Kennedy, whose works are featured at the the Village Exchange Gallery on Leonard Street. Kennedy was an ardent supporter of the series, generously sharing his talents and support with many village events each summer. Mark your calendars now for the final concert on September 11 with Jonathan Miller, BSO Cellist and John Gibbons, Harpsichord commemorating not only the 10th anniversary of 9/11, but also paying tribute to Colin Kennedy, to famed cellist Bernard Greenhouse (Miller’s mentor and friend), and to Gabrielle Vawter, a longtime supporter of the Boston Artists Ensemble.
Donation: $15. Proceeds benefit music programs at the Annisquam Village Church. For additional information visit www.jacquelineschwab.com or www.annisquamvillagechurch.com or call 978.283.6416.

Crazy Weather Guy
For those of you Cape Ann Twitter folk, you all know that guy.
The guy who gets so very excited and the amount of exclamation marks in his tweets goes up exponentially with each heightened chance of more catastrophic damage to our area.
You just know he has dreams of the storm bearing right down through the middle of his house so he can report about it first hand.
If you are from Cape Ann and are on twitter you know this guy.
I just hope he doesn’t beat himself up too bad as the storm approaches.
CRAZY WEATHER GUY- PUT DOWN THOSE STORM TRACK MODELS!!!
I know the Official GMG Hurricane Irene Pasta Zugu Models probably pushed you over the edge but I’m thinking it might be a little less creepy if you picked up a Hustler or Playboy to get ‘er done instead.
Hurricane Mug Up Party
Although last week’s Mug Up and Deviled Egg Competition was on a lovely sunny day, we have held Mug Ups in torrential rain and nasty stuff before, so a little hurricane threat isn’t going to stop us hearty New Englanders. Mug Up will go on Sunday at 10:00 am at Khan Studio and the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck at Madfish Wharf on Rocky Neck. There will be coffee, food and fun. Batten down your hatches and come on by.

150 Years Ago….. Civil War Sesquicentennial
Music for Annisquam Concert
The historic Annisquam Village Church presents Jacqueline Schwab, renowned pianist of Ken Burns’ Civil War documentary series, in a program entitled “150 Years Ago….” commemorating the Sesquicentennial year since the War between the States. Schwab performs music of period, sharing the evening with Celtic musician, Michael O’Leary and a vocal set by the women’s a capella group, ‘Leven, directed by Kristina Martin.
Jacqueline Schwab is a folk and classical improvisational pianist who plays "gorgeously spare piano" (The Boston Globe) yet "sounds as if she has an orchestra at her fingertips" (Sing Out). Chosen by the film maker Ken Burns for the emotional content of her work, Schwab has performed on the soundtracks for the Grammy award-winning Civil War, the Emmy award-winning Baseball and Mark Twain, and the recent series on National Parks: America’s Best Idea among others. She performed at the White House for President Clinton in 1997 to celebrate Burns’ Lewis and Clark series and also at the Smithsonian in 2000 celebrate its exhibition on The Presidency. In May, 2009, she accompanied Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on the Late Show with David Letterman.
Schwab’s signature style defies easy categorization, fitting somewhere in the crossover between folk, traditional, classical and new age music. She has "… an uncanny sensitivity to the moods and proprieties of music from other eras," wrote New England Folk Almanac reviewer Scott Alarik. Her solo recording, Mark Twain’s America – A Portrait in Music (on Dorian), recreates the sounds of nineteenth-century American parlor music – Stephen Foster and Civil War songs, hymns, spirituals, and ballroom dances. A Lexington Minuteman solo concert review said, "(Her playing was) full of colors and introspection which drew the listener into a musical reverie from which it was hard to return." Schwab has performed and recorded with many traditional and folk musicians, among them: Scottish fiddler Laura Risk, singer Jean Redpath (on A Prairie Home Companion), fiddler Alasdair Fraser, cellist Abby Newton, glass armonica player Dean Shostak, fiddler Andrea Hoag, singer-songwriter Dillon Bustin, and singer Jeanne Morrill. For her work with Ken Burns, she has also collaborated with fiddler Jay Ungar, bassist and guitarist Molly Mason, fiddler Matt Glaser, whistle player L.E. McCullough and others. She has played on over forty recordings.
Underscoring the Cape Ann connection with this repertoire, Michael O’Leary, singer and Celtic musician, comes ashore from the Thomas E. Lannon to join Schwab for several numbers, and the women’s a capella group, ‘Leven, under Kristina Martin’s direction, will perform a set of Civil War songs.

The Ardelle Heads for Safer Waters 08/27/2011 6:25am
I caught the Brand New Pinky Schooner Ardelle in the Annisquam River this morning. I’m guessing it was headed back to where She was Born to stay out of the way of the impending Storm.
The Great New England Hurricane, Boston, 1938
The Great New England Hurricane of September 1938 killed 600 to 800 people, damaged or destroyed 57,000 homes, took out 26,000 automobiles, and felled 2 billion trees. It was the first major hurricane to hit New England since 1869. In New York City, the East River surged three blocks inland. This photo was taken on Boston Common where the Ducklings sculpture is now.

Looks like Hurricane Irene took an extreme turn to the West last night while we we’re all sleeping. Glenn (aka Swimdad) in California, did’nt heed the warnings and left his boat in the water. Hopefully he can repair it in time For the upcoming Mayor’s Race at the Schooner Fest this year.
Good Luck Glenn!
From Glenn, (aka Swimdad) Former Gloucester Fisherman;
Paul, I Was on the way to join the GMG Sloop at the schooner fest, but I ran into Mean Irene. Boats alittle beat up, broke the mast and bow sprit but all hands are fine.

Pick Those Tomatoes Before The Storm and Make Sista Felicia’s Sun Dried Tomato Recipe
There are tons of tomatoes ripe on the vine what will undoubtedly fall off when the storm hits. So if you had an event planned for today which was cancelled or if you’re looking for something to do, go pick some tomatoes and make some delish Sun-Dried Tomatas!
Sista Felicia recipe
This time of year I find myself daydreaming of my childhood! I remember Sunday mornings, while the grownups in our family had coffee and Italian pastry with my grandparents, my brother, cousins and I would play outside in my grandparents’’ yard. Every summer while playing I watch my grandparents’ garden grow. I always knew that school days were approaching, when their tomatoes were ready for picking! Tomato time at my grandparents’ house was a family affair! Canning tomatoes for the winter was a ritual.
Ingredients:
2 pints of vine ripe small tomatoes (use a verity of small tomatoes)
Kosher salt
Fresh ground pepper
Olive oil
Step 1: Rinse and dry tomatoes
Step 2: Cut tomatoes in half
Step 3: place cut tomatoes in a medium bowl
Step 4: Season tomatoes with 2 teaspoon of Kosher salt
Step 5: Drizzle Olive oil over tomatoes
Step 6 : Gently toss to evenly coat tomatoes with oil
Step 7: Pour tomatoes onto a cookie sheet fit with a cookie rack
Step 8: Using your hands turn each tomato on rack with cut side facing up and season with 1 Tablespoon of Kosher salt
Step 9: Dust tomatoes with freshly ground pepper
Step 10: Place tomatoes in preheated in 200 degree oven for 3-4 hours until tomatoes are dehydrated
Step 11: Pour a ¼ cup of olive oil into each mason jar.
Step 12: Place 1 garlic clove in each jar.
Step 13: Layer sun-dried tomatoes and garlic ¾ of the way to the top of the jar and top with olive oil.
Step 14: Place a lid and ring onto each mason jar and store in refrigerator until ready to use.
