1938 no-nonsense classroom film New England Fishermen shows Gloucester, schooner, steam, and diesel trawlers
At the dawn of talkies, ERPI (Electrical Research Products Inc) sought to “bring the world to the classrooms” via 16mm A/V equipment and a catalog of films. ERPI was a subsidiary of AT&T and a forerunner of Encyclopedia Britannica Films.
They produced GLOUCESTER FISHERMEN (under 9 min) in 1938 with backing from Clark University. The film’s narrator was James Brill. There was also a 1938 film titled Shell-Fishing.

I love filming and photographing around Gloucester all year round, but especially at this time of year when I find the light to be sublime. The moisture in the air provides a gossamer veil that magnifies the supernal quality of light; even the most ordinary of daily activities captured finds added beauty.

Phyllis A on the Rails From Kathy Chapman
Kathy Chapman writes-
The beautiful lines of Phyllis A’s hull will only be visible for a few weeks at the Gloucester Marine Railways. Work on her is being funded by a 2011 Community Preservation Act grant from the residents of Gloucester.
From the Phyllis A. Marine Association: By focusing on the gill-netting industry, we highlight a time in Gloucester’s history that is not currently well covered. The Phyllis A. was fished by the same Gloucester family for 75 years. Many people working in Gloucester’s fishing industry today, at some point, fished off the Phyllis A.

Commercial Fishing: Rome
View From Our Hotel Last Night In Rome In The Heart Of Rome’s Commercial Fishing Port: Hotel Tibor
Looking out the front window of our room we got to see the Rome Dragger Fleet. Behind our Hotel, Hotel Tibor there are fish processing plants and open fish marketplaces, and along the boardwalk next to our hotel and in front of the commercial docks there are lines of Seafood Restaurants. The one we ate at last night reminded us of The Causeway. Large fresh portions obviously landed from the boats tied up right in front of us, a family run joint and very reasonable prices.
Inside our hotel facing the boats they had a restaurant Latitude 41. the similarities were wild.
What was particularly cool was to see the boats way over here using the same types of net reels and doors as they do here in the states. I’ll post more pictures of the boats soon. I was taking pictures of the way the dragger fleet had their decks set up thinking that FOB Joe Testeverde would like to see.
Beautiful spot!

This one looks really nice full screen. The detail in the background is stuff the human eye doesnt see at ths time of the morning but is only captured with the long exposure taken at three different focal lengths and then combined so everything is in relative focus.
