My View of Life on the Dock
So I was busy grading lobsters with Frank on Saturday afternoon and I get a call from good buddy Toby (a regular contributor to GMG). He tells me there is activity on The Lazy Daizy and I better get my ass over to the moonies for a GMG update. There’s just no way for me to get away at that point so I ask him to swing by and take some pics for the blog. Here is his work-

This coming Saturday from 10 am ’til around 3 pm the IDRC will set up
our booth at the Heritage Center for “Schoonerfest 2008”. As well as
having an exhibition race between the “Bluenose” crew and the local
Coast Guard we’ll be raising awareness, distributing joy and selling
t-shirts. Feel free to stop by and support the cause.
September 13th is the International races in Canada and plans are now
being made for that trip. Anyone interested can contact me for further
information.
There are still tickets available for the fundraising sail aboard the
schooner “Thomas E. Lannon” on September 21st. This is going to be a
great afternoon sail and we strongly recommend all members try and make
it. The money raised for this event will make the first payment on the
new boats.
September 27th we’ll be participating in the “Trails and Sails” event
with the Heritage Center, bringing people out in dories and showing them
how to row.
Volunteers are needed, and greatly appreciated, for all above events.
I’d love to see some of you pitch in hour or two and help support dory
rowing!
Peace, out.

Katherine and Samantha talk about Dory Racing and getting involved.
Just a reminder. The elimination races to determine who will represent
the U.S. in Canada are this Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Niles
Beach. Winners will be given 4 nights accommodations in Lunenburg, Nova
Scotia and $500 per person expense money. The races are open to all
members and non-members but non-members must join and pay dues at
registration. A representative from each crew MUST register at St.
Peter’s Square, Friday night at 6 p.m. We will conduct a mixed doubles
elimination race even though the category is not sanctioned at this time.
Over and out.

(thanks for the reminder Geoff)

It looks like it’s going to be a beautiful morning to grab a cup of coffee and head on down to Niles Beach to catch the races. Bring the family. Get into it. It’s fun fun fun!

Greg checked in with part 4 of his Thompson Brothers Runabout boat project which we have been following.

Here’s the latest folks. At this point the train wreck Lazy Daizy has been taken out of the water and sits on stands in the parking lot at East Gloucester Marine. Not much progress (if any) has taken place on her but at least the owner isn’t incurring big water dockage fees and will be paying much less to watch it rot away in the parking lot as opposed to rotting away in the water.

A couple of weeks ago I highlighted a boat project that some folks were taking on and I’m thinking that I may have motivated them just a little bit in this post
Well since then I am very happy to report the couple has really made incredible progress on their Thompson Brothers Runabout.
Here are two updates in the short time since we highlighted this project with some nice shots of the restoration project.

Congratulations, the boat is coming out spectacularly. It’s nice to see.
I highly recommend everyone to check out the pictures, before and after. The job Greg and his wife are doing show that these projects can be done if you are handy enough. Of course this is a 14 foot boat and not a monstrosity like The Huge White Boat or The Lazy Daizy but nonetheless it’s going to be a boat to behold once completed.

In case any of my loyal readers thought I was going to leave you hanging on the complete abandonment Lazy Daizy Restoration Project, here is the latest photo of it’s progress in the month of June. I wonder how much the rent is each month on a boat that doesn’t leave the dock.

Lazy Daizy Restoration Update 6/17/08.
As of today she’s still a hopeless cause work in progress. It would be great if the guy that owns this boat could con some rich folks into thinking it was a historic vessel of some sort so they could finance him and get the thing refurbished.
Maybe they could get some LNG money to bail him out. Hell the Peabody Essex Museum got some, and I don’t know what the heck they had to do with laying a pipe for natural gas transmission off the coast of Gloucester. Surely they could spare 25 grand or so for the lovely Lazy Daizy. I think the old gal could use the money. Maybe The Peabody Essex Museum would be willing to carve out $25k for this beauty of a boat. It’s a fishing boat and we need to preserve it.
I bet we could buy a whole lot of Saran Wrap with $25K. We could wrap the Lazy Daizy up in Saran Wrap and then enclose her in a lucite box and mount it on top of The Heritage Center. Yeah, that’s the ticket! Sweet!
