Gloucester and Fiesta at Peabody Essex Museum
As I frequent museums and collections for work, and Gloucester art abounds, I suffer bouts of ‘Gloucester acquisition affliction’ . Relative newcomers at PEM include a St. Peter Fiesta scene by Gifford Beal and one of Portuguese Hill by Olga Itasca Sears. As much as I am fond of PEM– and I mean no disrespect to this august institution– I sorely wish the Cape Ann Museum had received the art or funds for acquisition. There are few major historic paintings of Gloucester (and the greater region) which remain in private hands. They include works by Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper. I’m trying.
While at PEM for special exhibits, I often check the permanent installation. Are the Frank Benson works and Norman Rockwell on view? Check. I make a point to spend time in front of the Philip Reisman 1951 Tuna Shed, another Gloucester painting and one that Wicked Tuna fans may like to scrutinize. Reisman was a masterful, versatile painter, and a smart gentle man. I was lucky to know and work with him. The Cape Ann Museum has examples of his Gloucester paintings in their collection and a binder of slides, photographs he took, many Fiesta. I remember labeling some.
I paused more than I ever have at the John Trumbull portrait of Alexander Hamilton. (Hmm. Have museums tagged works representing Alexander Hamilton? It would be a mastery of quick edits matched up to the Lin Manuel Miranda song.)

I am looking forward to the upcoming Childe Hassam show opening July 16th at PEM. I went to see the Rodin exhibit.

WOUNDED WARRIORS WITH CAPTAIN DAVE AND NANCY MARCIANO ABOARD THE YANKEE FLEET CELEBRATE THE FOURTH OF JULY
In honor of our American military veterans and Independence Day, Wicked Tuna’s Captain Dave and Nancy Marciano are hosting a group of veterans aboard the Yankee Freedom. Captain Dave first began working with the Wounded Warrior Project about four years ago. He usually treats small groups throughout the season but his year has been incredibly busy for the Marciano’s and he needed a larger boat to bring out a larger group of vets.
Captain Dave naturally turned to Captain Tom Orrell, from where he began his fishing career. Capt. Orrell owns and operates Yankee Fleet Fishing. Orrell was all on board with the idea and has donated his largest ship, the Yankee Freedom. Jim Destino donated lunch and Mayor Romeo Theken and the City helped organize gift bags.

Exclusive Interview with ‘Wicked Tuna’ Star Dave Marciano: Captain Discusses New Season, Popularity of Fishing Today
In an exclusive interview with Wide Open Spaces, Captain Dave Marciano of the FV/Hard Merchandise gives a sneak peak into the new season of “Wicked Tuna” on National Geographic.
Monday nights are about to be wicked awesome once again with the return of “Wicked Tuna” on National Geographic. As one of the most wildly successful shows on the channel, the fifth season of “Wicked Tuna” promises to be better and more action-packed than previous ones.

This season, six teams will be competing against one another to catch the most Atlantic bluefin tuna. As viewers know, some of the crews are recovering from a rough fishing season in the Outer Banks. Participating boats for Season 5 include the FV-Tuna.com (Captain Dave Carraro), Hard Merchandise (Captain Dave Marciano), Pin Wheel (Captain Tyler McLaughlin), Hot Tuna (Captain T.J. Ott), Wicked Pissah (Captain Paul Hebert), and newcomers, The Eric & Sarah (Captain Pete Speeches), a father and daughter team.

NEW FILM: Luminescent Sea Salps
These salps were filmed in Gloucester’s inner harbor and had a luminous appearance in the blue lights of the fishing boat Hot Tuna, the largest boat in the Wicked Tuna fleet. I think the song “La Luna” by Lucy Schwartz adds to the magical movement of the salps and other creatures in the glowing blue. (So sorry to Captain Ott for startling him while hanging over the edge of the dock to film the salps at the rear of his boat, and Hey to Nicky Avelis!)
Sea salps are warm ocean water creatures, exploding in population during algae blooms. With beating heart, notochcord, and gills they are more closely evolutionarily linked to humans than to jellyfish. Sea salps are individual creatures that through asexual reproduction, can form linear chains up to fifteen feet long!
Salps are planktonic (free floating) members of the subphylum Tunicata. Tunicates get their name from the unique outer covering or “tunic,” which acts as an exoskeleton. The sea salp’s tunic is translucent and gelatinous; in some species it is tough and thick.
