New Orleans Fun ~ more than New England usually allows

Let’s face it folks, we, in New England, are known for being kinda stuffy, right?  Isn’t that why we’ve welcomed Henri Smith to Gloucester?  Isn’t that why we do our level best to keep him here year after year?  Yes, he’s a fine musician.  Yes, most of his friends are all top talent too.  Yes, he infuses Gloucester will all kinds of culture we’ve never before experienced.  But let’s be honest.  He’s fun!  And so are his super-talented friends.  Just look at this video:

Don’t these guys just look like they’re having the time of their lives?  We need more of that — and we’re going to get it on June 3o when Henri gathers the most talented, fun-loving New Orleans musicians you can see north of the bayou at North Shore Music Theatre to open for the iconic for Aaron Neville (get tickets here).  Henri’s band will include:

Stanton Davis on Trumpet
Amadee Castenell (from HBO’s Treme) on Sax, Flute and Vocals
Herman Hampton (Berklee professor) on Bass
Daniel Heath on Trombone and vocals
Les Lumley (from Ghetto Mysticism) on percussion.

Ben on Piano (you know him)

Now for some fun tonight (see full music lineup here) we have to mention one of Gloucester’s most talented and fun musicians with an acerbic wit, Inge Berge, will be at the Dog Bar with his trio.  See what we mean by wit and fun in the video below:

Amadee Castenell from HBO’s hit series Treme Joins Henri Smith on June 30 at North Shore Music Theatre

Yesterday we featured Stanton Davis and Les Lumley from Ghetto Mysticism.  Today it’s Amadee Castenell, who has recorded and toured with Elvis Costello, Allen Toussaint — with whom he appears in the HBO hit series Treme (Amadee is to Irma Thomason’s left in this video) and many others.  Amadee joins Henri Smith’s band on sax & flute June 30 opening for Aaron Neville at North Shore Music Theatre (get tickets here).  At about 3 minutes into the video below you get an idea of Amadee’s virtuosity — starts out slow and subtle, then wows the audience!

Now that it’s summer, there’s more to do on a Wednesday night in Gloucester.  Lots of good people playing (see full music lineup here), but we just have to mention the first solo appearance by Dylan Estes (Allen’s son) at Giuseppe’s tonight.  He’ll start about 8:30.  We’ll be there with John, the Zip Line Kid.

Well, our son John has a new project this week.  While repairing our roof, we displaced a bird nest with eggs in it and John moved the nest with some help from Vickie, who’s been talking to the bird for some time now suggesting that she really didn’t want to be in our roof anyhow.  Watch this video and see how mother and son help out another mother and her (hopeful) offspring.

Local Favorite Opens Blues Festival ~ Top Local Talent On Stage with National Recording Stars!

Did you really think Gloucester would have a Blues Festival without featuring Local Talent?  Not in the Live Music Capital of the World!  (Just in case you thought that was Austin TX, check this out)

Gloucester’s favorite New Orleans transplant, Henri Smith will open the Blues Festival on August 11 at Stage Fort Park.  (If you want to see & hear the national recording stars who will follow, check out all the videos on this page.)

Exactly three weeks from today (and six weeks from the Blues Festival) Henri and his band open for AARON NEVILLE at North Shore Music Theatre in Aaron’s only Northeast US concert this year.  You know you want to go to both concerts.   Get Aaron Neville tickets here and Blues Festival tickets here.

More proof that Gloucester is in fact the live music capital of the world can be found by checking out the live music schedule for this weekend.  More new listings since yesterday bring us to 25 artists at 17 venues just tonight and tomorrow — ’nuff said!

Wanted to let you know we’re opening our shop up this Monday, June 4. We’re located at 50 Maplewood Ave, Suite 3, next to 7/11 and the new McDonalds (we’re between Miguel’s and the car wash.) Our hours are going to be 10-7 Monday-Friday, with late Thursday hours until 9. Saturdays and Sundays we’ll be open 11-4, with extended hours for pre-registered rental customers to pick up and drop their bikes.
We have an awesome selection of used bicycles – road bikes, vintage cruisers, and mountain bikes, all of which have been tuned up and gone over with a fine-tooth comb – they all come with 30 day warranties. And from now until the end of June, if you buy a used bicycle from us, we’ll give you up to $10 in free accessories!
Big Mike also offers tune-ups for $45, and we are still offering mobile service for an additional $5 each way (so if you don’t have a big car or a bike rack, you can still get that bike fixed!) We do all manners of repairs, especially rehabs of those bikes in the cellar you’ve been ignoring for the last decade. They’re probably still good!
We’ve also got some great accessories here, from training wheels to grips to lights, locks, and helmets. We do rentals, as well! We have a fleet of hybrid/city bikes that are brand new, stylish, and locks and helmets are provided at no additional cost.

Yesterday’s video introduced you to the Gloucester Blues Festival performers (click here if you missed it) and promised a week-long preview.  Today, we feature the headliner Shemekia Copeland, whose stellar performance at the White House recently aired on WGBH TV.  Watch the video and you’ll know why you have to get tickets now, so you can save $12.

Ekaterina Smirnova, a Brooklyn based artist, started painting in a Russian art school in Siberia in 1991. Her style has been further developed at The Art Students League of NY, where Ekaterina has been a member since first moving to the United States in 2006. Watercolor, her main medium, and etchings are often exhibited at art shows around New York and the Northeast. In the past 4 years, Ekaterina has received various awards in juried shows including from The Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America and Brooklyn Waterfront Artist Coalition (BWAC). Currently she is a Junior Scholar and a member of The Art Committee at The Salmagundi Club.

This is the 8th year of the Goetemann Residency Program. The quality of the applications submitted continues to rise and there has been an increase in our geographical range. Applicants have come not only from the Boston area, state of MA and New England, but now there are many more national and international candidates. Choosing only 3 from this list caused us to examine more carefully candidates who best serve the colony’s interest in diversity of stylistic orientation, career level, and understanding of the mission and objectives of our community of Rocky Neck.
