Fish On Fridays- Saturday Edition From Kathy Chapman

The Fish on Fridays series is a collaboration between Gloucester photographers Kathy Chapman and Marty Luster. Look for various aspects of Gloucester’s centuries-old fishing industry highlighted here on Fridays.

This week we have interviews with sushi chef Jordan Rubin from Rocky Neck’s Madfish Grille about his famous Glosta rolls, and his goal to visit the fish auctions in Japan.

We also have a video of Jordan placing tobiko on the Glosta rolls. Tobiko is the Japanese word for the flying fish roe. The raw roe is very nutritious, due to its high vitamin content, high protein content, and large ratio of Omega-3 to Omega-6 fatty acids.

Still shots show their Black Thunder spicy tuna rolls and a Salmon Sushimi appetizer with charred ramp and ginger scallions. Delicious indeed!

The Sushi prepared at Madfish Grille is far and away the best sushi I’ve had anywhere.

I make that statement without any homerism involved.  I’ve eaten sushi all over the place- California, Las Vegas, NYC, countless high end sushi joints.  No joke- no exaggeration- the sushi at Madfish prepared by Jordan and his staff is the best I’ve ever eaten.  The most creative, the most brilliantly prepared the most savory delicious sushi I’ve ever consumed.  I can’t stress it enough.

My recommendation is to ask them to make you whatever they’d like.  Jordan told me the term for this style of ordering but I forget the Japanese saying.  Last time in we went with his recommendations and were blown away.

The Results Of The Good Morning Gloucester Italian Sub Challenge

I decided to end the nomination period early so we could perhaps catch the nominated sub shop/bakeries off guard.  There was 4 nominees clearly in the lead at the time of the tally.

Our judges Craig Kimberley, Ed Collard, Toby Pett and Erik Lorden each individually placed their orders for a large Italian sub with oil and seasoning at the respective sub shop/bakeries.  Again, wanting to perhaps throw off the nominated sub shops/bakeries that may have been on the lookout for a sub order for a “Large Italian Sub with everything on it”.

I assigned a point system that heavily favored taste (totally subjective) and value cost per pound (totally non-subjective) with 40 possible points awarded in each of those two categories.

Remaining was 20 possible points for equal distribution of meat and condiments.  5 points for the least equally distributed meat and condiments 20 points for the sub with the most equally distributed meat and condiments.

 I’d also like to reinforce that there’s no shame in coming in 4th.

It’s true what they say, just like the Oscars, just to tally the number of votes to be nominated makes you a formidable joint to get a sub in the first place.  No losers all winners in my book.  I wouldn’t hesitate to order a sub from any of these places as well as many other sub shops in GTown that didn’t get nominated.

We’re crazy lucky that way, spoiled with great eateries in Gloucester.

Cape Ann TV Annual Special tonight 10:30 on Channel 12

Last month we told you about Cape Ann TV’s Annual Meeting, which they filmed and it airs as a special tonight at 10:30 p.m. Channel 12.

“Why would I want to watch an annual meeting?” you ask.  Well, this is not your average annual meeting.  It’s fun.  Allen Estes and I were among 4 producers who talked briefly about our experiences and showed clips from our shows (Local Music Seen in our case).  The other producers were Kim Smith who wowed us with clips from her spectacular butterfly movie that premieres Friday at Cape Ann Community Cinema (more on that here); Shaun Goulart, who’s tale of how he came to make his thriller is almost a thrilling as the movie itself; and John Ronan, who has the longest running show on Cape Ann TV and offered us a wonderful surprise in his clips.  Here’s a taste of what you’ll see:

If you miss it tonight, you can catch it again Saturday 6/22 at 5pm and Monday 6/24 at 9pm.

JOYCE YANG replaces Dubravka TomsiÄŤ June 30 @ Rockport Chamber Music Festival

 We regret that, due to an inflammation of her right hand, Dubravka Tomsič must cancel her concert as part of the Rockport Chamber Music Festival on Sunday, June 30, at 5 pm.

Fortunately, we have engaged the remarkable young pianist Joyce Yang who wowed audiences earlier in the Festival in her performance with the Jupiter String Quartet to perform in a solo recital. The Washington Post exclaims Yang’s, “poetic and sensitive pianism…(is) capable of hurling thunderbolts.” Ms. Yang will perform the following program:

Scarlatti: Sonata in D major and Sonata in A minor
Currier: Scarlatti Cadences and Brainstorm
Schumann: Fantasiestücke, Op. 12
Rachmaninoff (arr. Wild): Dreams, The Little
Island, and Vocalise
Rachmaninoff: Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor

14 live shows ~ decks, schooners, restaurants, bars ~ music all day!

One of the best reasons to live in Gloucester is that when the weather finally turns nice, it’s outdoor music galore.  Case in point: today you can soak in music on 4 decks, a schooner, at Shalin Liu with the ocean backdrop and a dozen restaurants/bars, many on the water and/or with outside dining.  Here’s a taste of Michael O’Leary singing Celtic music on the Lannon.  Not sure if there are any tickets left for today’s music sail, but you can call 978-281-6634 and find out.

After the sail, get ready to dance & party with Boston Magazine’s Best Local Band, Three Day Threshold at the Rhumb Line tonight at 9.  Here’s a video of them at the Paradise in Boston.  Video sound isn’t great, but you get the idea (click here if you want good sound).

Having these guys in Gloucester is BIG.

Louise Mosrie’s songwriting is riveting; her performance is captivating.  Every song tells a story that touches your heart.  Here’s a great quote about her that sums it up:  “…basically, she’s William Faulkner with a guitar.” – Rich Warren, WFMT-FM Chicago

Last year Louise took time out from her tour to tape Local Music Seen with Allen Estes.  Here’s my favorite song from that show — gave me the chills from the control room.

Help Steve Caraway make a new CD

By now, you’ve probably heard of artists raising money from fans in order to make their next CD.  It’s call crowdfunding and it works.  As a musician, your chances of getting signed by a label are smaller now than ever before — and, frankly, getting “signed” isn’t what it used to me.  By the time you’re done recording your next record, you’re likely to be in debt to the label for more than you’ll ever make selling it.

Many top Cape Ann Artists have used various forms of crowdsourcing to fund recording projects (see my post about Chelsea Berry and KickStarter here.)

Crowdsourcing is not donating.  It’s more like paying for the CD before you get it — and it’s usually a good deal.  Plus you can choose from all sorts of goodies offered by the artist.

The latest crowdsourcing project that I’m aware of is Steve Caraway’s and he’s offering some very inventive “perks”, including an opportunity to actually perform on his new CD, which might sound crazy if it weren’t coming from Gloucester’s king of open mics!

Steve is a member of several bands, including Secret Service, Fun Bucket, Miss Judy’s Farm and an all-around booster for Gloucester’s thriving music scene.  He describes this project not so much as a solo album, but a collaborative effort with many local musicians.  Check out his video, below and make a pledge here.  Rock on Steve!

After one of the slowest May in years (10 years according to my logs) warmer winds and less rain brought bigger fish up river for Thursday, Friday, Saturday but not Sunday as the fish rested that day. Bait was herring dropping back but warm on Sunday. it got so warm we will be looking for the sand eels as bait in the coming weeks. Finicky fish all three days as the bass had all the bait they could eat and there heads where down pushing bait out of the marsh

Painting and building are my practice.  I have devotion toward material, and I am as devoted to aerosol paints as I am to mud.  All material is flesh and connotes promiscuously within society and nature.  Then there is the problem of the impulse to order.  As an artist I need to still stuff.  Each piece acts as a halt—a submission, as a person, to the need to resist chaos.  What chaos?  Every artwork, every mark: a deceleration.  Every one a breaking.  Since, still, at the end of the day, at a turn, rupture is in the lull.  This is my protest.  I (am) matter too.

It’s a rainy, two-show night in Gloucester

The way I look at it, a rainy night is perfect for music in one of Gloucester’s restaurants.  You’re not gonna fire up the grill.  Picnic on the beach?  Nope.  Dinner on the boat?  Fuggedaboutit.

Tonight you can catch two great shows.  Start at 7pm with local favorite John Rockwell featuring Dave Brown (one of the best guitarists alive today) at Alchemy (one of only 2 Gloucester restaurants with 4.5 stars on Yelp and Gloucester’s highest rated restaurant with music).

Then head over to Minglewood and rock out with Dennis Monagle, Ned Nugent and Mark Pelosi at 9pm.

North Coast Angler Fishing Report 5/24/2013 From Skip Montello

Fishing Report: 5-24-2013

Sorry about the weekly fishing report being late, as I’m just back from Abaco, Bahamas (@ 1 this morning) hunting bonefish and tangling with big ‘Cudas, huge Mutton Snappers, and the shark that ate half of the biggest bonefish of a lifetime; estimated at 34 inches and 12 pounds!

Capt Al reported that the Merrimac and Joppa were alive all of last weekend as solid numbers of stripers were chasing tons of herring. The guys that got out to fish were well rewarded as stripers pushing 40 inches were mixed in with schoolie sized fish. Flies and soft plastics were the hot baits. Meanwhile, Cape Ann enjoyed some very good backwater fishing at the Candy House, Jones Creek and at the Essex Greenbelt areas. Most of the stripers were schoolies, but few fish in the mid 30 range were also taken. Steve P. was taking his fish with the jumping minnow, skitter pops and plastics on a jig head. Brian also did OK with fish at Crane but the Essex backwaters slowed as the rains fouled the water quality, best baits were topwater JM’s and the MD sandeel.
