Pick Your Own Apples at Russell’s Orchard

It’s that time of year. Joey in 2008: “Have you picked apples this year?” If you haven’t now is the time. Russell’s Orchard in Essex (Follow signs for Crane’s Beach) has trees loaded with crispy tasty apples that just taste ten times better than apples that have been sitting around in a grocery store. You think Gaia are flavorful? Taste one right off the tree.

If you have small children who need to pick their own pumpkin, take a hayride out to the fields, eat cider donuts fresh out of the machine, or pet a bunny you need to go next weekend to Russell’s Orchard. Click here for how Pick your Own. Hayrides are thrown in free on the weekends.

Find them on Facebook.

If you are an old curmudgeon who thinks a hayride is just for kids think again. The tractor drivers are comedians.

I take this guy’s photo and as he pulls even with me, “Hope my face didn’t break your camera!”

Go early on the weekend as this is very popular although Russell’s is set up to handle a crowd. Plenty of parking and plenty of stuff to do. I didn’t even make it to the winery. This time. Meanwhile I have homemade apple crisp with vanilla ice cream on the menu this week. 298 days until the Blackburn Challenge. Plenty of time to fit into the kayak.

Open 9-5 every day. You miss out on the hayride if you go during the week.

Living With The Dunes Workshop September 29th

Hi Joe,

I am the Gloucester Conservation Agent (I’ve been here for a year–is that still considered new?). The Gloucester Conservation Commission is hosting a "Living in Dunes" workshop at City Hall on September 29 at 7pm. I have attached the poster, but was hoping maybe you could help us get the word out through Good Morning Gloucester.

It is geared toward helping those who live in the Wingaersheek Rd/Coffins beach area and the Gloucester end of Long Beach and are thinking to build, add on,, create a driveway, upgrade their septic, etc… This is free and will help them understand what it means to be in a dune.

We have a great set of experts speaking–a coastal geologist, a land use attorney and an environmental scientist. They are listed on the flier.

Look forward to hearing from you. Thank you!!!

Anne Krinsky, Artist in Residence

Anne Krinsky

Delineation Lime, by Anne Krinsky, acrylic on panel, 24” x 24”

Printmaker Anne Krinsky is the third Goetemann Artist in Residence for 2010. If you missed her opening talk you can still meet her and see her work during her Open Studio hours this weekend and next weekend. Hours will be posted on the sandwich board outside the Residency Studio at 51A Rocky Neck Ave.

Anne Krinsky makes grid-based works on paper and panel that occupy a middle ground between painting and drawing. In them, a delicate linear geometry is alternately overlaid with, or superimposed upon, translucent layers of acrylic color. Her panels are built up over time with thick swaths, splotches and drips of candy-colored paint. She subsequently sands these down to create a seamless seductive surface — a visual representation of a present moment shaped by prior experience.

Her upcoming show, Anne Krinsky: Time / Line, 2000 – 2010, opens in October 2010 at the Trustman Gallery at Simmons College in Boston. Krinsky’s layered acrylic paintings are in the collections of the British Museum, the Boston Public Library, Graham Gund and the UK charity, Paintings in Hospitals. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is represented in Boston by Soprafina Gallery.

A Message from Margi Green

Hi Everyone ! As many of you know, Lauren and Ted have sold their business and the building to a nice couple from Ohio, who had a coffee shop there. They seem like very nice people and intend to keeping things going as Lauren had before; and later add their own touch. I thought it might be nice to acknowledge their efforts and uplifting presence in our neighborhood through a card ( which Brenda will be making !) and flowers . Lauren’s last day is Sunday ; they’ll be closed Monday , and the new folks will open Tuesday. The card will be at Brenda’s to sign , and an envelope for donations towards the flowers (like a few dollars). Ted and Lauren turned down 3 potential buyers to sell to someone who would keep The Last Stop going – an admirable move ! He said that he hopes everyone will come down and say hello to the new owners – Sandy and Jean , ( and I believe their son’s name is Dave), and make them feel welcome.                                                        Thank-you! – Margi

Chickity Check It! Fish Box Derby Sunday Morning

Hey Joey, thanks for thinking of us. I have included our mission statement below, which is about as close to a press release as we get. The seventeenth annual race begins Sunday morning the 19th on the Rogers Street hill in front of Gorton’s. Practice runs at 11:00 and the heats at High Noon. This year we have 37 cars registered for the "Thrill of the Hill", I know competition will be keen. We are expecting Mayor Kirk, Senator Tarr, and Rep. Ferrante to help us kick off the race, so bring your camera and come on down for one of the great family events of the Gloucester year.

Fish Box Derby Committee

image
The Fish Box Derby Race is a family event held each year in early September. The race was established by a non-profit organization (Fish Box Derby, Inc.) whose purpose it is to provide the local youth with an opportunity to build and strengthen family relations. Since 1994, the Fish Box Derby has offered the kids of Cape Ann the opportunity to test their design, building and driving skills in a safe and exciting race down Rogers Street. Boys and girls from ages eight to fourteen are eligible to enter. We have purposely stayed independent from the All-American Soapbox Derby so that parents and kids can work together on the cars, and that everything from buggy wheels to high tech bearings is allowed.
There is no entry fee for the race, we are fully supported by charitable donations from individuals, businesses and local organizations, whose names are emblazoned on the hay bales that line the course. Through the generosity of our supporters, the Fish Box Derby now offers two $1,000 college scholarships each year, for which all racers are eligible. It has been truly rewarding to see our former participants take the lessons learned in the race with them into adulthood.
The cars are entered into one of two categories: "Freestyle" or "Modified". Prize categories include the traditional First, Second, Third, Fourth, as well as Best Pit Crew and Koolest Car. Donations made to the Fish Box Derby Race help to cover all race-related expenses. The balance is placed in a scholarship fund for the young participants. Each participant is eligible to apply for scholarship funds as she or he prepares to graduate from high school. For race details, helping on a committee, or general information, see or website www.fishboxderby.org or write to: Fish Box Derby, Inc. PO Box 162 Gloucester, Ma. 01931-0162. Time and Tide Opening Reception Masquerade and Illusion Sept 17th

Friend of the Blog Kristina Brendel writes in-

    T&T Masquerade

Time & Tide Fine Art, 4 Market Street in Ipswich will hold an Opening Reception for their latest exhibition, Masquerade and Illusion on Friday, September 17 from 7-9 pm.

Time & Tide is teaming up with Time Well Spent to collect books at the reception for More Than Words, a nonprofit social enterprise that empowers youth who are in the foster care system, court involved, homeless, or out of school to take charge of their lives by taking charge of a business. Visit http://mtwyouth.org for more information about More Than Words.
Masquerade and Illusion includes painting, photography, multi-media and sculpture from area artists including Marilyn Swift, John Geesink, Anne Demeter, and Thorpe Feidt. Also included in the show are works by Belarusian painter Vladimir Kontsedailov. (The photograph is a detail from "Masquerade" by Kontsedailov.)

For the night of the reception only, Brian Brogan of The Painted Story (whose studio and gallery is on the third floor of 2 Central Street in Ipswich) will display his work as well. Brogan’s work is primal, shamanistic; showing human’s indigenous spirituality and equality.

"I’m hoping that we will raise a few eyebrows with this exhibition," smiles Kristina Brendel, Time & Tide’s director. "I’d really like to push the expectations of a local gallery past the tried and true into artwork that makes people pause and wonder."

Masquerade and Illusion will be on display at Time & Tide until November 15.

WED, Sept 15th: Anne Krinsky, Artist in Residence Gallery Talk

    Anne Krinsky

Delineation Lime, by Anne Krinsky, acrylic on panel, 24” x 24”

Printmaker Anne Krinsky will be the third Goetemann Artist in Residence for 2010. She will give a talk about her work on Wednesday, September 15 at 7pm in the Rocky Neck Gallery.
