Cut Out Stern on The Dog and I vs Setting Table On The Stanley Thomas

Johnny Doc Herrick has lobster traps all ready to launch off the stern as lobster season is getting under way.  If you notice the stern of the Dog and I is cut out level with the deck of the boat.  Some guys like open sterns and others have closed sterns on which they build setting tables.  The ones with setting tables like the Stanley Thomas slide the traps down the rail of the boat and set them off teh setting table.  the ones with the cut out sterns set the traps off of teh deck of the boat.

Beautiful Industry- Hydraulic Control Aboard The Stanley Thomas

Below the hauling station aboard Johnny “Doc” Herrick’s Dog & I is another example of the hydraulic control which operates the lobster boat’s pot hauler.

You don’t suppose these controls have seen their fair share of use do you?

Red Baron Lobster Boat Model At GMHC Gift Shop

Here’s another comparison of The Red Baron lobster boat model and Mark Ring’s lobster boat The Stanley Thomas.  Note the same windows in the trunk cabin.  Note the same color scheme.  Note the same hand rails along the roof.  Mark Ring has since taken the windows out of the trunk cabin in The Stanley Thomas (the photo was taken in 2002).

Normally I wouldn’t post a picture of a Lobster Boat Model but in this case, this particular lobster boat model looked almost like an exact replica of the Stanley Thomas, Mark Ring’s Lobster Boat.  They sell these models at The GMHC gift shop.

Here’s The Stanley Thomas

Beautiful Industry- Seaweed Balls

Toby Burnham says they could be little alien cocoons, LOL!

Matt Ring Shows Us A Seaweed Ball

Matt Ring aboard the Stanley Thomas shows us these seaweed balls.  They are almost perfectly round and made of seaweed with little sand mixed in.

Mark Ring who has been lobstering for over 30 years tells me he has never seen them before and Toby Burnham who brought some in a couple days earlier said the same thing, that he had never seen anything like them either.

They are sponge-like and when squeezed will let out a little water and if you throw it on the deck it will flatten out a little with a splat like landing.

All baited up and ready to go lobstering. See the bait in the tote? That’s what you call dragger bait and is mostly comprised of mud hake, small whiting and herring.

I think Mark forgot to take his meds this morning.

Off Into The Dark

Early Morning.

Off to tend the gear goes Mark, Matt and CJ.  I’m looking forward to watching the New England Revolution/DC United game that CJ will be officiating Wednesday night.  From what I understand there will be serious playoff implications on the line.
