Kickstarter Projects We’re Loving Right Now

Posted by Lucinda Scala Quinn

Hi Everyone,

I love hearing people’s stories of why food and cooking is important to them- whether it’s how they’re putting it on their own table, getting out there with a message to make the food system better, or teaching someone else your best recipes and tips.

When I began my publishing career, there wasn’t any crowd-sourcing help or a way to get the message out to tons of people to fund books. Truth be told, I self-published my first book before it was picked up and published years later! Luckily,  there are a ton of different ways to get the message out today, and I’ve found these two Kickstarter campaigns that I wanted to spread to all of you Mad Hungry-ers.

Sista Felicia’s Sicilian Cookbook

As a fellow Italian and for those of you that have watched my show, some of my best food memories are of cooking from my family’s Italian heritage. Those recipes are filled with warmth, comfort, history and flavor. Felicia is on an ambitious mission to share her family’s recipes and traditions through a series of 4 cookbooks that will embody her “commitment to ensure the past is not lost but is forever saved for future generations”.  Felicia has just a little more to go on her goal and has 10 days left.

Take a minute to watch their videos, read their blogs and Facebook pages, and if you feel empowered by Felicia, please donate!

Best,
LSQ

Well … Aurelia Nelson found a clever way to host Sista Felicia on her North Shore104.9 radio show Curtain Up that features guests in music and theatre. But it wasn’t much of a stretch.  Anyone who’s ever seen Felicia in the kitchen knows that she puts on a great show.  She’s got star quality!

Sista Felicia’s Waterfront Festival tent on Friday

So get up early enough tomorrow (Sunday) to catch Aurelia Nelson interview Sista Felicia about her new cookbook at 9am and you’ll also get to hear Peter talk about how our Fall concert series is reviving The Larcom Theatre in Beverly.

In the meantime, you can bop down to the Waterfront Festival and check out Sista Felicia’s tent.

Watching her put the sides on is a good show in and of itself.

‘Sista Felicia’s’ Sicilian cooking
Gloucester-rooted book is now a series

By Gail McCarthyStaff Writer

Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan grew up in a family surrounded by simmering pots of pasta and bubbling brews of tomato sauce, all created by mothers and grandmothers who never used a recipe.

Their style of cooking, straight from their memory, included a pinch of that ingredient, or a handful of another, and so on.

But two generations later, out of fear of losing these heirloom recipes forever, Mohan — at the urging of her husband Barry — set out to make a cookbook of sorts for her twins, Amanda and BJ. From that seed sprouted her effort to make such a book. But she never imagined that the original scope of the work would grow exponentially.

Although Gifts of Gold is completed and at the printer, my Creative Director James Eves III, owner and Master in his field at Cape Ann Giclee, and I have been busy planning The Red Carpet Cookbook Launch Gala Event to be held on August 28, 2013 from 7:30 to 11:00 pm at Cruiseport Gloucester. James has been designing the beautiful Sista Felicia logo-embellished tote bag that is included in some of the Kickstarter Pledge Packages. He has an unparalleled eye for detail in everything he creates. The invitations to the Red Carpet Gala are just as amazing as the evening we have planned.

The Cruiseport Gloucester staff has been wonderful to work with and very helpful in accommodating all the necessary details for this special evening. I am excited to announce Cruiseport will be preparing recipes straight from the pages of Gifts of Gold that evening and will be shaking up my favorite Lemon Drop Cocktail at the bar. Join me, along with my family, friends, Sista Felicia Team, and supporters, for a night of celebratory dancing, food, and fun!

Individual tickets can be purchased through pledging my Sista Felicia Kickstarter Project at this link-

Did You Get Your Sista Felicia Iced Tea At The Sidewalk Bazaar or Farmers Market Yesterday? Don’t be The Dope That Misses Out! Right In Front Of Sugar Mags Today- Get Some!

From what I understand the blue mason jars were all the rage, people just throwing haymakers trying to get to the front of the line to make sure they got theirs.

And who could blame them?  When the sun is blazin there’s nothing you want more than to drink some ice cold special recipe Sista Felicia’s iced tea out of a aqua blue mason jar dripping with condensation from the icy cold goodness inside.

No brainer city right there.

All the cool kids are rockin the blue mason jars.  Question is, are you?

Huge help from so many FOB’s that I’m scared to death to try to compile a list for fear of missing someone but I’m sure Felicia will put together a nice thank you soon.

Dinner Dealer Founder Jessica brand writes-

I’ve yet to meet Felicia but I have to tell you that her kickstarter video was so heartwarming. I could listen to her talk for hours. They way she talks about Italians cooking for memory, I know exactly what she means. I only lived and worked in Italy for 6 months, a long time ago, but I experienced first hand what she was talking about. So incredible, I couldn’t resist sending you a note.

Buona fortuna!

A unique & colorful cookbook that will bring to life lost recipes & traditions from my Sicilian kitchen to yours. My Gifts of Gold!

Funds raised through Kickstarter will allow me to realize the first step in my dream of publishing a series of four cookbooks that includes recipes and stories I learned growing up in a Sicilian family. When I became a mother of twins, I was compelled to collect the stories and the recipes I felt were being left behind because I wanted my children to be raised with all the same traditions and rich cultural heritage I had experienced.

What started out as a gift for my children quickly evolved into a hardcover 250 plus page restoration of Sicilian culture and foods. Through my cooking videos onGoodMorningGloucester.org and Media Program Network (MPN), a demand has developed for a text copy version of all my recipes so they may be shared with others within my community and beyond.

My first book is ready for print; it is written, is loaded with photographs, and awaits funding. Monies raised will pay for current  expenses related to editing, book design and layout, photography, and publication.

With your help, Kickstarter will enable me to bring my passion for all things Sicilian to your kitchen to share with your loved ones. This book embodies my commitment to ensure the past is not lost but is forever saved for future generations.

Felicia, Craig, Hannah, and Pat

Yesterday afternoon I popped over to Felicia’s to find her and her fantastic team getting ready to launch Felicia’s Kickstarter program for her first cookbook. Craig Kimberley was shooting Felicia’s Kickstarter video and there was a mountain of food styled by Craig and Felicia, with Pat and Hannah providing assistance. Craig has created many cooking shows and he knew exactly how he wanted to film Felicia’s wonderful cooking demonstrations. It was lots of fun watching the two of them working at what they both love to do–Felicia cooking and Craig directing and shooting–and I was so glad to have had my camera with!

Many Thanks to the Positively Most Awesome Community Ever!

The Cape Ann Monarch Milkweed Project was positively a resounding success. Thank you to everyone who ordered and picked up your milkweed plants. Thank you to Joey who turned my small seed of an idea into a fabulous community-wide project and who also very kindly offered Captain Joe and Sons for mug up and pick up. Thank you to Felicia for taking valuable time from writing the world’s-greatest-cookbook-ever and spending the entire morning making and serving coffee and Sicilian gigilani cookies (I know that is totally misspelled) and for helping with the plants and for just being a great friend. Thank you to all my GMG fellow contributors and all the FOBs for coming, and for everyone’s enthusiasm in the project.

And, most importantly, the Monarchs thank you!!!

We have exactly fourteen plants remaining and all fourteen are spoken for. After all the plants are picked up and the money totaled, we will have enough to make a donation to the Rocky Neck Cultural Center. So thank you again. I am very inspired by the success of the program and plan to later in the summer have a Cape Ann Monarch Aster and Goldenrod Program.

How to Plant and Care for Your Milkweed Plants

Common Milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) has a taproot. Plants with taproots do not like to be disturbed once established so it is best to plant your Common Milkweed seedlings as soon as possible. Common Milkweed is not too fussy about soil and is the milkweed we see growing in fields, roadsides, dunes, and meadows. It can reach up to six-feet in height, but more commonly grows two- to four-feet. Common Milkweed spreads by underground shoots and by seed dispersal.

The Marsh Milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) are well-rooted year-old plants and can be planted in the garden now, or within the next month or so. Marsh Milkweed grows best in good garden soil and/or moist areas. Marsh Milkweed is clump forming and does not spread by underground shoots.

Both milkweed species prefer full sun, but will take some slight shade. Plant with the soil line equal to the soil line in the pot. Place a stake nearby so that you do not step on your little milkweed seedling. Water gently. Check frequently on your milkweed plant until it is fully established. Water when dry, but do not over water. Monitor for milkweed aphids. Milkweed aphids are tiny soft-bodied orange insects. If you do see any aphids, gently wash them away with water; no soap or strong pesticides needed!

A huge heartfelt thanks to All the Gloucester Families Helping with the San Giuseppe Film Project. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

A special thank you to Sefatia for organizing the trolley, and for being the best most spectacular hostess for the St. Joseph trolley. Traveling from home to home, she knows by heart, and explains in great detail, each of the family’s alar traditions and stories. She also manages to keep the trolley gang together (all 50 or so). Thanks to Sefatia, no one was left behind!

Thanks to Mayor Kirk for sharing in the St. Joseph trolley and festivities. Gloucester is so blessed to have the BEST Mayor ever!

Thanks to CATA and Ed Sallah for donating the trolley. Ed is an amazing driver and was so considerate towards each and every member of our exuberant party.
