Wall Street Autumn

For those of you who didn’t get to the Gloucester Guerrilla Art Project II last week, this is my photo video of “Wall Street Autumn”. My friend Peter Fedele is playing amazing guitar on the musical piece from his CD Hullabaloo. He lives in Rockport with his wife and 3 children. I love listening to him play.

Thanks, Joey, for helping me figure out how to get this posted! You are the best!

Essex Barn

Joey has been posting the barn-raising process on 133 in Essex. I rode by the other day and saw the near finished building. Cows in the field, beautiful fence – feels real old timey.

Gloucester Weather

Luckily this isn’t today’s weather, but it could be at any time. Remember that old saying about New England weather? “If you don’t like the weather, just wait a minute- it will change.” See a slideshow of my photos on our ever-chaning weather.    —Sharon

Where Zat? #12

Where Zat?

Last week’s winner was Paul Frontiero AKA capeannpainter who on a long shot guessed the identity as a Lane’s Cove shack.

Because of the economy, we have suspended asking small businesses for prize donations. BUT… it’s still fun and past winners don’t have to feel guilty about guessing!

A huge thank you to the businesses who have donated the prizes in the past.

This week’s location might be too easy…Sorry, Joey!

Who was Blynman?

Blynman Schoolhouse
Blynman Schoolhouse

The Blynman Bridge and the Blynman School were named for Rev. Richard Blynman, the first minister of the town. The History of the Town of Gloucester, written by John James Babson in 1860, has the interesting background of the bridge and Cape Ann in general. I’m going back to read more.

Just for fun! Tim Oakes

tim-oakesI met Tim several years ago when he was announcing the International Dory Races . He has a million little kids who are always on the beach cheering on Daddy in the seine boat races during Fiesta! Here’s more about those races and why he’s smiling in this photo.  —Sharon

Rockport Tool Co.

I don’t know very much about the Cape Ann Tool Co.,  so if anyone has a good online source of information or first-hand knowledge, please pass it along!

Thanks!  —Sharon

Winter in Gloucester

logv_

When I lived on Marchant St., I had a skylight in my room. I had to stand on the bed to get this shot.  Living in the middle of town has its benefits!

Cookie– You asked for churches! Here’s one for ya! Watch for more in the future.

Take your kids to the Library!

Sawyer Library
Sawyer Free Library

If you have children and remember the magic of learning to read, why not share some of those books you loved as a child?  There are programs for children as young as newborns, movies, activities, and  music  for children of all ages. And while your child is occupied, maybe YOU can look for a new book or check out music to take you far, far away from the real world!

This list covers our local libraries, but you if you can’t find what you want, the librarians can help find it over the bridge.

Here are 10 tips for choosing books for children.

Happy reading! And remember to start Flapping like a Haddock for more Cape Ann family-friendly information and fun!

Just for Fun ID!

jeremiah-and-allie A couple of days ago, I posted a cropped photo of this dad and his daughter. One person said they knew who it was, but wouldn’t tell Ha! But now we know. It’s Jeremiah Nicastro and his happy daughter! Smile, Allie!

Where Zat? Winner!

lanes-cove-shack

Paul Frontiero took a long shot when he guessed the Lane’s Cove shack and when I notified him, he wrote back….

“You gotta be kidding me?
I’ve been down there alot. Must be implanted in my noggin.
I promise I won’t guess for awhile. Unless… one of the next prizes is a Cruise. Thanks Sharon.
Take Care, Paul

So Paul wins a gift certificate from the Lone Gull.  Congratulations, Paul!

We know how hard the economy has been hitting us all, so until things pick up, I’d rather not ask small businesses for donations. Soooo- we can still have fun with this without prizes, and Paul won’t have to feel guilty about guessing!!! Jan, you too!

Where Zat #11

Last week’s winner was Jan Dunsky who identified the Union Congregational Church. Today we have a $20 gift certificate from the Lone Gull Coffee House on Main St. in downtown Gloucester. Thank you , Joe and Mary Borge, for donating this week’s prize!

I think Joey will approve of the degree of difficulty for this one!

The Salt of Gloucester

“The sea is salt because the sea is sorrow,

As ships and men, none last or alone,

Are lost and the names toiled like sorrowful mysteries

In churches in harbors on the grief-got sea:……”

Yesterday John Ronan, Gloucester’s Poet Laureate, read his poem “The Salt of Gloucester” at the fundraiser for the Russo family. Please click here for the full poem. Many thanks to John for joining us in this special event.
