Info from Jo-Ann Castano

MULTI-DAY, MULTI-VENUE FILM FESTIVAL TO LAND IN GLOUCESTER AND ROCKPORT THIS OCTOBER

The Cape Ann Community Cinema at 21 Main Street in Gloucester will celebrate its 2nd full year in

business with 17 straight days of films from around the state, around the country and around the world.

The Cape Ann Film Festival will run from October 1-17, and will feature 43 films and events, many of them

with filmmakers in attendance.

The Festival’s preview night is on Thursday, September 30 starting at 7:00pm, and will feature trailers from

each of the 17 nights of films, plus a special musical set from the quirky instrumental rock band,

The Weisstronauts.  Admission to this special event is $10.00, with complimentary hors d’oeuvres, beer and

wine for all guests.

2010 marks the first year that the Cinema has invited another venue to participate in one of its festivals.

The Shalin Liu Performance Center at 37 Main Street in Rockport, which just this week starts its

year-round film programming under the name “The Rockport Music Cinema,” will host several of the Festival’s

films in its 330-seat state-of-the-art amphitheater.

“We’re hoping that a lot of folks who have heard about us but haven’t made it down yet will come and celebrate

with us during this very huge month,” said Robert Newton, managing director of the Cape Ann Community Cinema.

“The Festival is going to be a great time for all, and I’m very much looking forward to making a whole lot of new

friends in October.”

The Cape Ann Film Festival will feature 43 films of all genres: “180° South,” “1981,” “Asparagus: A Stalkumentary,” “Barbarella,” “Best Worst Movie,” “The Blue Bird,” “BoyBand,” “Breathless,” “Cairo Time,” “Canvasman: The Robbie Ellis Story,” “The Cartel,” “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” “The Clamdigger’s Daughter,” “Cropsey,” “Do It Again,” “The Eagle: America’s Tall Ship,” “For Once In My Life,” “Gasland,” “The Gloucester 18,” “The Green Room,” “Handsome Harry,” “Hibakusha,” “Jean-Michel Basquiat: The Radiant Child,” “The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground,” “Lovely, Still,” “Metropolis,” “My Tale Of Two Cities,” “Night Of The Living Dead: Re-Animated,” “Orgasm, Inc.,” “Orlando,” “Polis Is This,” “Racing Dreams,” “Ran,” “Science Fiction Double Feature: 2081/I’m Here,” “The Secret Of Kells,” “The Secret Of NIMH,” “Soul Kitchen,” “Speedy Delivery,” “Stonewall Uprising,” “The Stranger,” “Ten9Eight” and “Truth: Fishing Crisis Or Government Mismanagement?”

Additionally, the dozen short films in this year’s “Media That Matters” touring show will be interspersed, paired appropriately throughout the Festival.

Synopses, trailers and full Festival schedule are listed on the Festival’s website at www.CapeAnnFilmFest.com.

Anne Krinsky, Artist in Residence

Anne Krinsky

Delineation Lime, by Anne Krinsky, acrylic on panel, 24” x 24”

Printmaker Anne Krinsky is the third Goetemann Artist in Residence for 2010. If you missed her opening talk you can still meet her and see her work during her Open Studio hours this weekend and next weekend. Hours will be posted on the sandwich board outside the Residency Studio at 51A Rocky Neck Ave.

Anne Krinsky makes grid-based works on paper and panel that occupy a middle ground between painting and drawing. In them, a delicate linear geometry is alternately overlaid with, or superimposed upon, translucent layers of acrylic color. Her panels are built up over time with thick swaths, splotches and drips of candy-colored paint. She subsequently sands these down to create a seamless seductive surface — a visual representation of a present moment shaped by prior experience.

Her upcoming show, Anne Krinsky: Time / Line, 2000 – 2010, opens in October 2010 at the Trustman Gallery at Simmons College in Boston. Krinsky’s layered acrylic paintings are in the collections of the British Museum, the Boston Public Library, Graham Gund and the UK charity, Paintings in Hospitals. She holds a BFA in Printmaking from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and is represented in Boston by Soprafina Gallery.

A Message from Margi Green

Hi Everyone ! As many of you know, Lauren and Ted have sold their business and the building to a nice couple from Ohio, who had a coffee shop there. They seem like very nice people and intend to keeping things going as Lauren had before; and later add their own touch. I thought it might be nice to acknowledge their efforts and uplifting presence in our neighborhood through a card ( which Brenda will be making !) and flowers . Lauren’s last day is Sunday ; they’ll be closed Monday , and the new folks will open Tuesday. The card will be at Brenda’s to sign , and an envelope for donations towards the flowers (like a few dollars). Ted and Lauren turned down 3 potential buyers to sell to someone who would keep The Last Stop going – an admirable move ! He said that he hopes everyone will come down and say hello to the new owners – Sandy and Jean , ( and I believe their son’s name is Dave), and make them feel welcome.                                                        Thank-you! – Margi

Ocean Alliance News Announcement from Iain Kerr

I am pleased to report that the RV Odyssey is in the Gulf of Mexico. She left Portland Maine on July 17th and while she had a rocky trip down the East coast, it was a very productive trip. The University of Southern Maine science team (lead by Dr. John Wise) have proved the viability of our aft cabin laboratory by developing TWO cell lines while at sea, Humpback whale and Fin whale. To the best of our knowledge no one has developed cell lines from these whales before and certainly not in a vessel at sea – this is GREAT news.

The Odyssey will be in the Gulf through October 2010, we will then lay her up over the winter and go back to the Gulf in May through August 2011. We plan to spend a minimum of 3 seasons in the Gulf to see how the oil and dispersants are moving though the food chains and the direct and indirect consequences of oil and dispersants on the whales in the region.

Thanks to the generosity of the Campbell Foundation (equipment) and the Ocean Foundation (airtime) the RV Odyssey now has a V Sat communications system on board. The V Sat means that the Odyssey is connected to the world 24 hours a day for a flat rate.

So as to be able to respond to this new connectivity – last week we launched a new website (thanks to the incredible efforts of Ilana and Shirish). Same address as before www.oceanalliance.org but it is now being updated daily. Please check out the news reports, blogs and stories from the Ocean Alliance and the Odyssey in the Gulf. Also please do check out our two Facebook pages ‘Ocean Alliance’ and ‘A Race To Save our Oceans’ .   –Iain Kerr

Looking for artist whose painting blew into the harbor

I was taking a walk on Friday at the Railways and a woman came by…a painter. She had been on the pier and the wind swept her painting into the water!!!! She’s about 40 years old I guess and as I remember sandy colored hair. She was pulling a wagon with all her painting materials in it. About 20 minutes after she left a man came up and his name is Elisio Braz 18 Honeysuckle Road 978-281-3883. He had fished out the painting.I am hopring that someone in the art colony might know this woman and could pass on this message. Thanks!   –Ruth Mordecai

Catherine Strisik

Performers and entertainers include:

  • Three Sheets to the Wind, a group of local musicians and Schooner Adventure crew members, are preserving the history of maritime work songs (chanteys) and forebitter songs.
  • Carol St. John will explain how graphology (the study of handwriting) works, talk about appropriate uses, and call for participants to contribute handwritings to demonstrate its validity for a fun, friendly, positive event.
  • Rick Drost began singing with a Kingston Trio-style group in high school, continued in a small folk group in college, then a glee club, and an opera chorus. He started writing and singing around coffeehouses in DC and New England in the ‘70s, finally settling in Cambridge, MA, where he was a member of the folk-rock group Parts and Labor. He performs at least once a week, wherever he goes.
  • Catherine Strisik, daughter of well-known Rockport artist Paul Stisik, has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico, for over 26 years. Her poems have appeared in numerous publications including The Cafe Review, The Comstock Review, Peregrine, Northwest Review, War, Literature and the Arts, and others. Her new book, Thousand-Cricket Song, from which she will be reading, is receiving much acclaim. This book of poetry gives a glimpse, through Strisik’s eyes, into Cambodian life 25 years after the Khmer Rouge slaughter of 1.7 million Cambodians through execution, disease and starvation. "Here is a perfect, clean and delicate (powerful and often terrifying) work of art," said John Nichols, author of The Milagro Beanfield War.
  • Laura Dow / Zumba. Working out can be healthy, rewarding, and beneficial; it can be lots of things, but it’s never been known to be an exhilarating experience… until Zumba! The Zumba program fuses Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a fitness program that will blow you away. Laura will present three Zumba rhythms ~ Salsa, Tango, and Flamenco~ to give you a taste of the program that’s taking the world by storm.
