Gloucester Offshore Lobster Boat The Michael and Kristen Stranded 200 Miles Out

Here’s A picture of The Michael and Kristen which is the Gloucester offshore lobster boat which lost power 200 miles out.

Here the Michael and Kristen prepares to offload it’s catch. It’s an offshore lobster boat as opposed to the vast majority of our fleet which consists of inshore lobstermen.

Stranded 200 miles out at sea Coast Guard has lobster boat, five-man crew in tow

By Richard Gaines
Staff Writer
The 77-foot, Gloucester-based lobster boat, Michael & Kristen, which became disabled and was drifting in high seas about 200 miles southeast of Nantucket on Wednesday, was being towed home by a Coast Guard cutter last night, through wind gusts of some 40 mph.

There were five people aboard the boat, which is owned by the corporation, Fair Winds Inc., according to Coast Guard spokeswoman Lauren Jorgenson. The corporation is headed by Charlie Raymond of Beverly, and the ship captained by Ron Davis of Rochester, N.H.

Be sure to watch it all the way through.  It gets pretty interesting tehn they start to band the lobsters.  Thanks to Josh Lordan who made the movie.

Tommy Burns’ Arethusa Back Lobstering

Tommy has been doing engine work to the Arethusa all summer long along with other repairs.  He had been lobstering out of a lobster boat half it’s size which meant he couldn’t shift lobster traps the way a true lobsterman would to follow the lobsters around.  With a boat like the Arethusa you can put a good amount of gear aboard and shift teh gear according to what the lobsters are doing.

There’s a saying in the lobster industry I heard my father say when I was much younger but it has stuck with me.  There are “lobstermen” who fish the gear and move the traps around to maximize their catch.  Then there are “pot haulers” who simply dump the lobster lobster traps back in the same spots and don’t move the gear around to maximize their catch according to lobster movement patterns.

Tommy Burns is a “lobsterman” and he is now back to lobstering.

Deck Of The Jupiter II

Toby has lots of bait ready to go.   The trail of seagulls that chase the boat down the harbor is wild.

Just Some Of The Things A Commercial Fisherman Might Get At Rose’s Marine Shop

Spool of Bait Bags
Spool of Bait Bags

The bait bags that come on a spool like the green ones above arrive in one long tube of mesh.  The lobstermen cut the desired length, bunch up an end and then clamp it to make a mesh-like purse.  Then they stuff the herring or pogies in the bags and set them in the lobster traps.
Orange twine pre-made bait bags
Orange twine pre-made bait bags
The orange twine pre-made bait bags shown above are much more heavy duty than the green plastic bait bags but are also way more expensive.  In the winter when the seals show up many lobstermen will switch over to the orange heavy duty bait bags because the seals rip the green ones right out of the traps to get the bait inside.  The orange bait bags hold up much better against the PITA seals.

Gloucester Seafood Display Auction- Grey Sole

Here’s some grey sole at the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction.

Within the first couple of years with my wife we were sitting at her parents house and somehow the topic of fish came up.  My mother in law told me she didn’t like flounder, but she loved sole.  I told her that sole is a flounder.  There’s a lot of people who don’t really know their fish.  I must admit as much fish as I’ve eaten in my lifetime if someone fried a fresh haddock or a cod fillet I’d have a hard time distinguishing the difference (and I’ve eaten tons).
My personal favorite types of fish in order of preference- fried whiting, baked haddock with the breadcrumbs, raw tuna, fried grey sole or yellowtail flounder, sockeye salmon.
Favorite shellfish- The Mrs’ Lobsterolls, steamed lobster with bernaise dipping sauce, baked stuffed littlenecks with my mothers’ stuffing recipe, Mexican Campeche brand shrimp with cocktail sauce, fried clams, mussels fra diavolo (extra spicy).
Look for part two of the video from the Gloucester Seafood Display Auction at 8AM

Rob and Kristin Parsons Lobster Rolls

Rob and Kristin Parsons submitted these photos of their lobster rolls.  While I give high marks for the omission of lettuce, celery and other filler, the buns seem to have been left on the grill pan just a tad too long.  A little more lobstermeat and a little less time on the grill would bring these lobster rolls into the upper echelon of lobster roll presentation.

Salmon Racks Aboard The Jupiter II

Fish racks make excellent lobster bait.  When the tides are running the racks hold in the bait bags much longer so the lobsterman knows his gear is still fishing when other types of bait may have washed out of the trap.
