My View of Life on the Dock
Fishermen Tattoos- Jerry McKay, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
A couple of days ago Dennis Silva, owner of the Topside Grill stopped by the dock to pick up his lobsters for the restaurant as he does daily. He gets them daily because he is a freak for freshness and quality and wants the freshest possible lobsters each day.
Anyway a couple of our lobstermen were offloading when Dennis showed up and I mentioned to them how Dennis has a lobster dinner on his menu for $13.99. It made the guys feel good that the guy that was buying the lobsters that they just sold me were going to a guy that was marketing them right.
A major beef with lobstermen is when places charge ridiculous prices for lobsters and make them unaffordable for the average person when in reality they aren’t that much money to put on a menu.

This just in from guest contributor Kristin Michel-
“Hey Joe –
What do you make of this furniture? I was in Maine visiting my in-laws and just had to stop and take a picture for you. Believe it or not, the chairs are much more comfortable than they look!

The Lobster Pool Restaurant took home best honors under the seafood shack category. Thats a big honor and I love that they beat out Woodman’s. Of course they did though, they know where to get the best lobsters!

You see how the traps are all set along the outside rail of the boat? Joe is going to set out some gear today. This is a ten pot trawl and all those traps are connected by a ground line with buoys at each end to mark where the traps are set in the ocean so when he goes back out he can find them by looking for his specially painted buoys.

Here is Johnny Mondello’s lobster red lobster skiff. Johnny built a plywood setting table for his traps so when he hauls them up he can place them on that plywood setting table to clean them out and rebait them. This is the perfect little skiff to fish the rocks (also known as fishing the bushes) when the lobsters are in tight to shore.

One is The Gloucester at Dawn series, and another is a Lobster series.

While delivering (what else?) lobsters this morning I spied this hardcover edition of the Secret Lives of Lobsters at the Dogtown Book Shop for $10. A steal.

Here Scotty Horne pulls away from the dock with two of his sons after a day of lobstering. Not sure if you can make it out but his little one is sitting up on the dash just to Scotty’s left.

This is one of the prettiest lobster boats I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure if this guy fishes it(my guess is he doesn’t) but boy this boat has some pretty lines.

Massachusetts Whale Safe Lobster Bands, originally uploaded by captjoe06.
BOSTON (AP) — New green rubber bands that will bind the claws of Massachusetts lobsters beginning this weekend won’t save the lobsters from the dinner table. But they signify a state initiative aimed at saving whales.
Lobsters caught in state waters will be given the bands, stamped “Massachusetts” and depicting whale tails, to highlight the state’s efforts to make the seas safer for whales by requiring lobstermen to use rope to connect their traps that rests on the ocean floor, rather than line that floats and could entangle whales.

Hey George, you have no idea how happy I am that you decided to make the new davit out of steel instead of knotty pine. It was painful watching the frustration as you disassembled that second one. Video coming soon! Looks like the third time is a charm.

Another freak lobster. Claw growing out of a claw. Funny how last year when I posted the picture of the half blue lobster some people had accused me of photoshopping it. Nope, that’s the way it is growing for real.
I wonder if there are the same ratio of mutations in humans but we just don’t hear about them?

Here is the lobster claw growing in place of its old one from the underside of the lobster. You can see by the size of it’s other claw it has a long way to go to catch up.
