Jud McCarthy- 92 Years Young

Here is Jud McCarthy, father of our lobsterman John McCarthy who owns the Tin Lizzy.  The other day John and Jud pulled up after a long day lobstering in not-so-perfect conditions and Jud was head aqnd shoulders down in the lobster tank unloading it

Now I know how broke up my body feels at 40.  I can’t even imagine doing the kind of work required to go lobstering at ninety two years old.  This is one tough old bird.

Toby Burnham Has A Weird Fetish

Toby loves rotten fish.  Not just regular fish, but he just loves rotten fish.  The more rotten, the better.

Come down the dock Saturday Morning at 10:00AM to see incredible life sized black and white photos as part of Mark Teiwes’ seARTS Waterfront Portrait  show.  Toby’s portrait is probably my favorite one along with Joe Grillo’s.
it would be nice to see some of my GMG friends come down and say hey!

Herring Flats

These are whart we call flats of frozen herring.

Usually the flats weigh 45 lbs, these particular flats weigh 25 lbs each.  They are being laid out on the floor so that they will defrost and our lobstermen can use them right away.  The 45 lb flats of herring or pogies  take a while to defrost.  To pull the fish apart is a huge pain in the ass when they are a big frozen rectangular solid block.   Breaking down pallet after pallet of frozen 45 lb flats wreaks havok on our backs but the real strain comes when you gotta lift them all back up while bent over.

I know, I know bend your knees.  It still doesn’t make it easier when your on your fifth pallet and they are stacked up high.  Not fun.  Not fun at all.

Peter Mondello Readies New Gear

Here is Peter Mondello offloading some newly built lobster traps.

Peter is the exception and not the rule as he builds all his traps himself.  Most guys buy their lobster traps from a trap builder like Winchester Fishing Gear, Friendship Trap Company or Eaton Traps.

Peter and his brother Joe use a shop under their father’s cobblers shop across from Saint Ann’s Church to build new traps and repair broken ones.

Helen Parker Textiles-18 Month Lobster T Shirt

While at The Cape Ann Farmer’s Market on Harbor Loop I picked up this lobster baby t shirt for Snoop Mad.  They didn’t have one in The Bean’s size or I would have got a matching one for her too.

Rush Phi Kappa Sigma At MIT!

The boys from Phi Kappa Sigma at MIT come every year for rush week to pick up a ton of lobsters to serve prospective rushees.

I thought MIT was primarily an engineering school but apparently they have their marketing down pretty good too!

Yep, More Of The World’s Best Lobster Rolls From The Mrs

This week I provided the lobsters and the Mrs provided the preparation.  Yum!

Think about this- stormy weekend, football on the tube, lobster rolls, and some hand picked out wine from my trusted wine aficionado advisor Toby Pett. Sounds about perfect to me.

Salted Pogie

Due to a herring fishing shut down lobstermen will be using other types of bait such as pogies.

LaRosa’s Seafood Risotto

Decadent.  Amazing.  Rich.  Delicious.

All words to describe the seafood risotto dish at LaRosa’s at the lights in East Gloucester. Loaded with lobster, shrimp and scallops, I was in heaven.

I’m Watching You

I’m getting into this up close photography of the creatures that come over our docks.

Me So Horny

See the spikes on the nose of this lobster? Notice how they are sort of dull? Well that’s because this particular lobster is an old shell hard lobster that hasn’t shed in a while.

The newly molted and new-shell lobsters have razor sharp points (because they have not been honed down yet) that love to find the underneath part of your fingernails when you are grading lobsters without gloves on. It hurts like a motherf^cker when one of those spikes jams up under your nail, believe me.
