Juni VanDyke street art public murals coming to Rose Baker Senior Center and more great news!

Juni VanDyke is busy working on a figurative mural series that will be installed along the Rogers side of Rose Baker Senior Center in Gloucester, Massachusetts. VanDyke resides in Cape Ann and has been the stellar Director of the arts program at Rose Baker Senior Center since 1993.  Her classes are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, “elbow to elbow on Tuesdays and Thursday mornings, and in the afternoons.” All are welcome.

In addition to teaching art classes, she rotates exhibitions of art created by participants in the various art programs. Fine artist Mary McCarl and Helen Burgess will have their work on exhibit in the lobby of the senior center beginning April 4th though July 5th.

VanDyke is also curating the show “Closely Related” for Flatrocks gallery opening May 27 – June 24, 2018. The exhibit “attempts to identify and examine artistic elements that appear congruently in works by artists related by friendship or marriage, or by filial kinship, or by the duality of artist and place, or…other. Is our art influenced by our environment; our politics; the company we keep and/or by our generic connections? And is what we create truly unique? Or was Picasso right when he said: Every painting already has a mother and a father?” Exhibiting artists: Kathleen Archer, Shelly Champion, Loren Doucette, Paige Farrell, Jay McLaughlin, Barbara Moody, Hans Pundt, Lynne Sauselle, Patti Sullivan, Juni VanDyke

Pia Juhl & Peter Herbert at Jane Deering Gallery, reception February 10th

Two person February exhibition at Jane Deering Gallery is one to see! See below for more information about the exhibition and the artists fromt the gallery’s press release:

Pia Juhl . After the Storm 2015 . Acrylic on canvas . 20x30 inches .jpgNew Work: Peter Herbert & Pia Juhl opens February 2nd at Jane Deering Gallery, 19 Pleasant Street in Gloucester with a reception on Saturday February 10th from 4-6pm.  Peter Herbert’s series of land and seascapes examines the play of light and color above and below the horizon line.  Also included are images inspired by Degas’ visit to Saint-Valery-sur-Sommes in the South of France and small works that focus on the glare of early morning light in Annisquam.  Pia Juhl writes: ‘I love to paint landscapes of Cape Ann and presently am concentrating on large-scale subjects.’ Glacial boulders, the marsh land, monolithic stones, the vast interaction of sky and sea — all of this has captured her eye.  She breaks down a scene into its essential colors and shapes, using the brush to ‘feel’ the painting’s form.  Both artists live and work on Cape Ann.  This is their first exhibition showing together.  Gallery hours: Friday-Sunday 12noon-5:00pm or by appointment by calling 978-283-2263 or 978-257-6608.

Peter Herbert studied at the Brooklyn Museum, the Art Students League of New York, with Brooklyn realist Andrew Reiss, master painter David Levine, and under the mentorship of Gloucester painters Erma Wheeler and Gordon Goetemann. His work has been exhibited at The Crosby Gallery, New York, NY, The Century Association of New York City, the Wenniger Gallery, the North Shore Arts Association, The Sawyer Free Library and in solo and group exhibitions at The Annisquam Exchange Art Gallery and the Annisquam Village Art Show.

Pia Juhl was born in Denmark and after meeting her American husband there, moved to Boston.  Early on, Edward Hopper was a great influence.  Today, her painting is more intuitive and influenced by Milton Avery, Wolf Kahn and Catalan artist Jaume Muxart. Her work has been exhibited widely on Cape Ann at Flatrocks Gallery, Cove Gallery, Annisquam Exchange Art Gallery and Art in the Barn.  She has also shown at Faneuil Hall in Boston and in Harvard MA.

Thoreau, Trails & Sails, and Greenbelt: this weekend’s all about taking the scenic route

Emily Levin at Essex National Heritage in Salem, MA, where she has directed marketing and events like Trails & Sails for nine years. The original painting commissioned for Essex National Heritage 10th anniversary (2006) was created by local Ipswich folk artist, Julia Purinton. It’s one of three landscapes: Seacoast ; Conservation Lands and Merrimack Valley (Industry)

Emily Levin of Essex National Heritage has directed Trails & Sails for 9 years and seen its growth. Levin told me that 2017 is “one of the largest line ups of different events coming together to showcase the region’s best places in the area. The historic road is already right there. Plus you can stop in all the wonderful restaurants and shops.” The Essex National Heritage headquarters moved to 10 Federal in downtown Salem, next to most anyplace on your visit. I’ll miss steady and affable Bill Steelman who has moved on from Essex National Heritage. Congratulations to Kate Day, Danvers former Town Manager, who has joined to lead the Scenic Byway efforts.

Participating artists Cape Ann Art Show Beauport Hotel Gloucester

Here is a digital who’s who catalogue with portraits of the participating artists and scenes from the inaugural Cape Ann Art Show at the Beauport Hotel Gloucester, MA. The art fair and the hotel were jumping on this gorgeous evening. Original works of art (not reproductions) were priced under $100 and up from there. The artists and the hotel were so well prepared and joyous, I was compelled to record their effort. Apologies if I missed anyone. I jotted down contact information and linked to artists when possible.

Exquisite new show opening at Jane Deering: Leslie Lewis Sigler & Paul Cary Goldberg

Jane Deering Gallery
Silver and Grey | Leslie Lewis Sigler & Paul Cary Goldberg
Opening Thursday August 3- continues through September 30

Jane Deering opening

from the gallery’s press release:

“The single object. A silver server. A stem from the woods. A treasured spoon. Petals of a dried flower. We experience these things not only perceptually but emotionally and intellectually as well. Silver and Grey celebrates the eternal life of an object: what it once was, what it is now, how it has passed through time and remains.

Leslie Lewis Sigler’s small paintings are reflective portraits of silver cutlery which remind us that these family treasures have an enduring life. “Such items pass through the generations as cherished heirlooms, survive the purgatory of antique markets, or perhaps find new life at estate sales. As their stories evolve, they form a lineage that connects us to one another, across generations and geographies.” -LLS

Paul Cary Goldberg’s series Here Still is a photographic narrative of natural objects he’s been gathering in his Gloucester studio over the past fifteen years. Specimens of discovery, resilience, and inevitable decline. Goldberg has presented the series in the nature morte (literally translated from the French as dead nature) tradition of art and created images both poignant and gentle.

Jane Deering Gallery Adin Murray Horizon paintings reception May 20

ONE DAY ONLY

horizon 3

JDG may adin murray

from the gallery’s press release:

‘In Celtic tradition, there is a belief that heaven and earth are three feet apart — except in “thin places,” where the space between the physical world and the spiritual collapses, and we’re able to glimpse the transcendent, or the infinite, or the divine. The space where the sky and water meet — sometimes gently blurring together, sometimes crisply forming the horizon — is such a place for me. It can be beautiful or foreboding, tumultuous or calm, light or dark, and always it speaks to the universal truth of constant change. Tides flow and ebb, light shifts as the sun tracks across the sky, the atmosphere transforms with the weather and the seasons. The space is powerful, profound, and humbling, yet often in the busyness of life it is overlooked. The aim of these paintings is to present this space alone in all its myriad manifestations, to allow the gaze to focus on the “thin place” that is the horizon.’ — Adin Murray . 2017
Adin Murray was born in 1974 in Manchester, Massachusetts. He received his BA in Art/Biology from Tulane University in 1997, and his MFA in painting from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2008. In 2008, he had a solo exhibition at the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport, and in 2009, his work was shown at the Woodruff Art Center in Atlanta, the Rymer Gallery in Nashville, and the Pei-Ling Chan Gallery in Savannah. His work has been featured in Faultline, the University of California, Irvine’s literary and art publication, and it also appeared in both Southern Living and North Shore magazines. Murray currently lives and paints on Cape Ann in Massachusetts. This is his third show with the Jane Deering Gallery.
