This Sunday, Senator Tarr is taking 4 people as his guests to the Larcom Theatre at 2pm for Henri Smith New Orleans Christmas Matinee followed by dinner at Teresa’s Prime (the new steakhouse in North Reading).

When local New Orleans transplant, Henri Smith, and his band take the stage Saturday and Sunday at the Larcom Theatre in Beverly, they won’t be the only people in the house with musical instruments.

That’s because members of the audience are bringing instruments to donate to The Musary — a free music lending library “no strings attached” serving Boston’s North Shore, including Cape Ann.

Everyone who brings an instrument to donate will be entered to win a door prize at intermission. The door prizes we have now are:

One night stay at Salem Hawthorne Hotel plus $50 gift certificate for Nathaniel’s (their restaurant).

Spa Day at Maison Esthetique Christiane Bourque Spa in Danvers ($400 value)

The Musary is a 501(c)3 on-profit organization that that works to motivate, cultivate and inspire people, especially young people, in our community to get involved in music. It’s worth getting up by 9am on Sunday to catch “Curtain Up” on 104.9

Just in case you haven’t noticed, North Shore 104.9’s “Curtain Up” host, Aurelia Nelson, has been inviting Cape Ann musians to be her guests more frequently of late and it points to a trend of featuring locals on the station as a whole (see some examples here).

Tomorrow (SUNDAY) at 9AM, she does it again, this time with Henri Smith. Henri will talk about all the special guest he has pull together for his New Orleans Christmas show at the Larcom Theatre.

When it comes to local entertainment the days of procrastination are over

I love to procrastinate.  One of my Grandfather’s favorite sayings (he had lots of them) is “Never do today what you can put off until tomorrow, ’cause you might not have to do it.”

It used to be that if you wanted to see live music in Gloucester and Cape Ann, you could decide at the last minute, stroll down to the venue just before showtime, get your tickets at the door, mosey on in and find a good seat.

Those days are gone.  Oops, did you want to see Chelsea Berry & Friends at Crowell Chapel on Dec 7 or Cape Ann Big Band’s Shalin Liu matinee on Dec 8?  Too bad.  They’re sold out.  The good news is that Chelsea & Friends added a new show on Dec 8 and there are still a few tickets for Cape Ann Big Band at 7pm.

But if you wanted to see Overboard on Nov 30 at Old Sloop, you’re just plain outa luck. They’re completely sold out.  So are a number of other local shows between now and Christmas.

More good news : we added a Sunday Matinee on Dec 15 for our Henri Smith Christmas show at The Larcom Theatre in Beverly, so you can still get good seats.  And there are still a few seats left to some of the Shalin Liu shows we told you about in this post.  But these won’t last long, so don’t think you’ve got much time to decide.

I think we can probably all agree that having a thriving music scene in Gloucester and Cape Ann is a good thing for all of us — even if it means we miss a few shows because we don’t pay attention to posts like this one that tell us to save the date.

By Poplar demand a Sunday Matinee at 2pm has been added for the Henri Smith New Orleans Christmas.  Henri Smith and his all-star band will bring the sounds and soul of New Orleans to New England once again for a special Matinee Christmas concert of traditional New Orleans jazz and blues with a touch of gospel, topped off with traditional Christmas favorites.   Henri’s special guest include Grammy-Award winner Amadee Castenell, Lynne & Mike Cabaret, Carmen Spada and Diane DiSanto.  See more about Henri’s special guest here.

Other Things Happening at the Larcom

The Slide Brothers on Saturday, November 2nd. The Slide Brothers are the greatest living musicians who embody the Sacred Steel tradition.  The joyous music these legendary artists create extends far beyond scared steel to encompass blues, rock and soul all celebrated with a sound that is uniquely their own.  This is their ONLY New England show this year.   With Special guest singer-songwriter Michael Thomas Doyle.   


Henri Smith & his all-star band, featuring Grammy winner Amadee Castenell bring a New Orleans Christmas to the historic Larcom Theatre for the very first time on Saturday, December 14th. The concert will feature traditional New Orleans jazz and blues with a touch of gospel, topped off with Christmas favorites.

Local stars going over the bridge to Beverly this fall

MardiGrasCrowdThere’s a hidden gem down the road in Beverly: The Larcom Theatre.  Opened in 1912 (the same year as Fenway Park) featuring Vaudeville shows, The Larcom’s initial advertising boasted, “Lit Completely by Electricity.”  Fully restored in 1985, the Larcom Theatre  became a second home to Le Grand David Spectacular Magic Company, which closed in May 2012.

In April 2013, Vickie and I presented Henri Smith at the Larcom Theatre to a sold-out crowd, many of whom had never before set foot in the theatre.  We fell in love with the Larcom the minute we walked in, checked the acoustics and told one of the owners (David Bull, star of Le Grand David) that we’d like to present lots of concerts in this acoustically magical theatre…

So, we begin with a 2013 Fall Music Series featuring Gloucester legend Allen Estes and his new Band on October 5 with Dave Foley’s Fabulous Mustangs opening, The Slide Brothers on November 2 with Gloucester’s Michael Thomas Doyle opening, and A New Orleans Christmas with Henri Smith on December 14.  We’re working on another six shows for late winter and spring of 2014 and will announce them in the not-too-distant future.

These shows will sell out quickly, so we’re giving FOBs first crack the best seats.  Here’s where you can get tickets:

The last time Allen Estes performed with a full band they nearly sold out the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford, which has more than twice as many seats.

NOLA-AirportFor the fourth year, Gloucester’s Rick Doucette, YMCA Teen & Camping Services director, is taking teens and chaperons from North Shore YMCAs to New Orleans during April Vacation to help people rebuild the City and even the Bayou — they plant trees as well as repair homes.

This trip works wonders on many levels: local teens are immersed in New Orleans culture; they feel the joy of having a profoundly positive impact on other people’s lives; they experience first-hand how working together builds a stronger community.

MardiGras2013_CabotAdMost kids goof off during April vacation.  Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer in giving kids free-time to explore the world and become themselves.  But something vital touches me when I hear that 47 local teens are going to donate their vacation time to work hard on a construction site or in a swamp so that people 1500 miles away can have a better life.

That’s one reason why Vickie and I are producing a concert next Saturday, April 6, featuring New Orleans natives Henri Smith & Charles Neville to help raise money for this trip.  Last year, we sold out Minglewood Tavern on Mardi Gras, so we decided to take it to another level this year and host it at the historic Larcom Theatre in Beverly (more about that here).

The season is heating up and you just can’t wait until the last minute to get tickets any more.  Here’s the scoop.

Cape Ann Big Band’s Friday concert @ Shalin Liu is already sold out, but you can still get tickets to see Blues piano man David Maxwell next Saturday and also Livingston Taylor on 4/13.

There are also a few tickets left for two excellent Crowell Chapel shows this week: Chelsea Berry and Dawn Mitchele tomorrow (WED) and Brendan James with Brian Jarvis, Charlee Bianchini & David Brown on Saturday.

The Mardi Gras YMCA Benefit Concert with Henri Smith featuring Charles Neville originally scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, February 8 has been rescheduled to Saturday, April 6, 2013.  All tickets and VIP Packages purchased for the Friday, February 8 concert will be honored on Saturday, April 6th.

P&V’s LOL #12: Sometimes you just can’t blame anybody

(For those of you who have just tuned in, “LOL” stands for Law of Life.  Click here to see the first 11.)

Everybody’s looking for somebody to blame — especially for last night.  First there’s the power outage.  Even though the official line still makes vague reference to an “abnormality”, you can bet people are scrambling to nail somebody’s ass — or “hold them accountable” to use the latest PC term.

Then there’s Beyoncé.  Joey may have liked her lip-synched dance numbers, but Vickie and I have to agree with venerable music curmudgeon, Bob Lefsetz, who said, “I wasn’t sure what to do after Beyonce’s appearance, join a gym or masturbate.” (We know Joey’s done the former.  What about the latter, Joey?)

Lefsetz tries to blame Madonna, CDs, Hip Hop (read his full tirade here) and he lauds  Prince, Adele, Mumford & Sons and The Lumineers.  (Joey likes The Lumineers too.  See this post.  Their show tonight at House of Blues — yup, across the bridge — is sold out.)

Singers love to lay blame.  Usually they blame somebody else, like when Beyoncé admonishes “you should have put a ring on it.”  Once in a while somebody writes a great song blaming himself.  Of those, my favorite is Guilty by Randy Newman, sung here perfectly by Bonnie Raitt.

You’ll be blaming yourself big time if you don’t get VIP tickets to see Henri Smith featuring Charles Neville this Friday.  It’s the best dinner / show / Mardi Gras party deal around.  Best of all, you can avoid feeling guilty because you’ll be helping to send local YMCA Teens on their service-learning trip to New Orleans in April.  Oh, and Henri won’t be lip-synching.

The older I get the more I realize that casting blame feels good, but doesn’t accomplish much — sort of like masturbating.

Blame is best left to songs.  Chelsea Berry knows how to write a great song that lays blame.  And you can bet she won’t lip-synch when she sings it at her  Shalin Liu concerts.

Last Mardi Gras (2/21/12) after a brief studio intro, we took the cameras and crew to Minglewood Tavern  to film Henri Smith’s excellent band featuring Charles Neville at a Mardi Gras fundraiser for the Y Teens Rebuild New Orleans trip.  The result is a high energy concert and interview with Henri Smith and Charles Neville in Latitude 43’s super comfy lounge area.  This special show airs tomorrow (SUN) at 6pm on Cape Ann TV Channel 12 and again WED 2/6 at 6:30pm
