Tonight Don’t Forget To Watch Our Boys The Gloucester MA Sanfilippo Fishermen On Mark Burnett’s Expedition Impossible TONIGHT!

-and if you are going to be at The Fiesta, don’t forget to set your DVR to record the whole series.

Joe Sanfilippo has told me that we will be proud of the work ethic and attitude from our hometown men- Nino, Joe and Gus Sanfilippo on the primetime network show which premiere’s on ABC tonight at 9PM!

Mark Burnett recently joined twitter and will be live tweeting during the show.  As you know Mark Burnett doesn’t spare any expense and the production values for this show will be over the top (like everything else he does, like Survivor for example).

Here are some pictures of Joe, Gus and Nino on their Gloucester Fishing Boat The Captain Domenic-

From ABC-

In celebration of his new, epic summer reality series, “Expedition Impossible,” Mark Burnett will be up on Twitter at @MarkBurnettTV on Thursday, June 23 from 9:00-10:00 p.m., ET and PT, during the premiere of the show, to offer commentary on the exciting action taking place, as well as behind-the-scenes anecdotes.

In addition, ABC.com will host a live “Chat Party” during the airing of “Expedition Impossible,” where viewers can come to the site, take a look at Mark’s tweets and chat with other fans during the show.  The “Chat Party” will go live at 9:00 p.m., ET/6:00 p.m., PT on Thursday and remain live until the conclusion of the west coast airing at 10:00 p.m., PT.

For more on “Expedition Impossible,” visit ABC.com at http://abc.go.com/shows/expedition-impossible.

On the premiere episode, “Sun! Sand! Sahara!,” the 13 teams of ordinary Americans set out on the adventure of a lifetime across the ancient kingdom of Morocco, battling rugged terrain, untamable animals and each other. After facing the sand dunes of the Sahara and the cliffs of Todra Gorge, one team will be eliminated.

Adventurer, zoologist, big cat trainer and all around risk taker Dave Salmoni hosts the show.

Featuring high adventure and human drama, “Expedition Impossible” follows 13 teams of 3, racing in a fun expedition across vast deserts, over snow capped mountains and through raging rivers in the beautifully exotic, fabled kingdom of Morocco. Each week a new stage of the expedition will be revealed to the teams. Will they crumble under the pressure of having to think clearly in the wilds of the great outdoors, or will they find a way to work together to complete their adventures? And if one person quits, the entire team is eliminated. After 10 stunning legs of competition with drama, comedy and great characters, one team will cross the finish line first to claim victory. Each winning team member will receive $50,000 ($150,000 total for the team) as well a new Ford Explorer.

Here’s a four part video series I taped with the guys-

Fort “Art, Rock!” Found!!

The “Art, Rock!” I was inspired to sketch by my Father was found Saturday at the Fort Playground.  Janey Brancaleone and her Dog Lola Were walking at the Fort Saturday when Lola sniffed Out the Rock under one of the Park Benches at the Playground. It’s a Beautiful and underated place to watch the Harbor action go by.

Art Critics can be Tough. But I think I passed Lola’s Art Test. She Sniffed the Rock out and didn’t Pee on it! what Artist could ask for more?  That will be the one Art review that I will cherish for a long Time! 🙂

Thanks Again Janey and Lola.

What to do on a rainy Sunday in Gloucester?? A Walk in Ravenswood!

Karen Pischke writes-

Hope you enjoy!

What to do on a rainy Sunday in Gloucester?? A Walk in Ravenswood! Last Sunday was rainy and grey, making the woods in Ravenswood even more magical!

Candace White of the Trustees of Reservations was a wealth of knowledge, taking us back in time pointing out old cellar holes, stone walls, the story of ‘the hermit’ of the woods. Candace related the history of Gloucester Harbor and its transition from a farming community to a fishing community. Old stone walls marking homesteads, each allowed to cut 20 cord of wood to heat their home for the winter. You could almost smell the fires burning in the hearths and hear the sound of horses trotting, wheels rolling as carriages carried folks in their Sunday finest along the stately paths.

Senses were aroused by the smell of damp leaves, bark, and pine. A kaleidoscope of shades of green with moss, fern, and stands of oak. Mountain laurel in bloom, chickadee singing and bubbling brooks lent to a sense of a ‘walking meditation.’ Lady slippers reminded many of their childhood, it was a most memorable walk and FUN for the whole family! The Nature Center had the start of the trail is a great place to visit. And even GMG was there to represent! No matter the weather, there’s always something fun to do in Glosta!

Best,    Karen http://www.dreamtimewellness.com/

AFFORDABLE SUMMER ART PROGRAMS FROM ART HAVEN AND THE ANNIE

With the third summer of Art Haven programs comes the opportunity for Cape Ann youth to combine the visual and theater arts like never before. And once again, low-income families will be able to receive financial assistance thanks to a Community Development Block Grant and the Bruce J. Anderson Foundation.

“We really want all kids to have affordable and fun opportunities in the arts,” says Art Haven Director Dawn Gadow. “The summer gives kids a great chance to work on really fun summer projects and to get outside and learn about Gloucester at the same time!”

The main thrust of Art Haven’s summer programming this year is Summer PlayCamp in conjunction with the new Henry Allen TheatreWorks, located at The Cape Ann (“The Annie”, to her friends) at 1 Washington Street. Students from ages 6 – 18 can participate in the program, spending half the day at the Art Haven studio experimenting in the visual arts, and half the day at The Annie writing plays and working on their acting skills.

Youth ages 6-12 will spend the mornings at Art Haven and afternoons at The Annie, while ages 12-18 do the opposite. The groups will work with themes from “The Mermaid Robot of Gloucester” and “Murder on Rocky Neck” to “The Witches of Dogtown”. The end of August even offers teens the chance to write their own political theater pieces. In each two-week session students will write a play, prepare props and costumes, work with materials like clay and printmaking, and perform their play on Thursday evening at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market.

“It’s amazing the creativity that can come out of kids of all ages,” says Henry Allen of The Annie. “These productions are going to be incredible displays of the artistic power found in the youth of Cape Ann.”

If theater isn’t your forte, Art Haven is also still offering a number of other artistic opportunities to the youth of Cape Ann. They will have continued open studio times for all ages and open darkroom times. These times allow artists of all ages to explore the art studio on their own terms with some artistic guidance from Art Haven’s staff.

Also at the Cape Ann Farmer’s Market, Teen Artist Guild members will once again have the opportunity to sell their artwork. Older students are welcome to be a part of this group to learn how to market and sell their artwork, both at the Farmer’s Market and beyond. These students will meet twice a week to work on artistic skills, business skills, and developing a sense of themselves as an artist.

“We’ve really got opportunities for everyone to get into the arts this summer,” says Gadow. “If you want to get creative, we want to help you.”

For more information about all of these programs, call (978) 283-3888, visit www.arthaven.org or 180B Main Street. Registration forms can be found on the web site or picked up at the Main Street studio.

Laura Harrington Discusses Her New Novel- Alice Bliss

Laura Writes-

Hi, Joey,
Thank you! for the most fun and most unique interview of my life.
My only regret is that I didn’t get to ask you any questions and so missed an opportunity to learn more about you.
Many, many thanks for your support and your interest.
All best, Laura

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Laura Harrington is an award-winning playwright, lyricist and librettist.  She teaches playwriting at MIT and lives in Gloucester, MA.  ALICE BLISS, her first novel, grew out of Harrington’s one-woman musical Alice Unwrapped, which ran off-Broadway in New York and in the Minneapolis Fringe Festival in 2009.

http://lauraharringtonbooks.com

Set in upstate New York, ALICE BLISS is about a 15-year-old girl in 10th grade, named Alice Bliss. She is deeply connected to her dad who is serving in Iraq with his Reserve unit. It’s a transforming coming of age novel about a small town looking after its own in times of loss; the love between an absent father and his daughter; the complicated love between Alice and her mother, Angie; and first love between Alice and the boy next door. It’s a universal story and yet touches upon something very personal: these characters’ struggles amid uncertain times echo our own, lending ALICE BLISS an immediacy and poignancy that are both relevant and real.

Main Street, Gloucester, circa 1890

Main Street, Gloucester, circa 1890 John I. Coggeshall/©Fredrik D. Bodin

This is the bend in Main Street’s West End, just past Palazola’s (where the large tractor trailer trucks get stuck). The photograph was taken shortly after trolley tracks were installed, but before the time of automobiles. In those days, small deliveries were made by horse drawn wagons. Large long-haul deliveries were made by train, sailing vessels, and steam ships.
Photographer John Coggeshall set up his 8×10 camera in front of Valentino’s. The second building on the left is where Bananas is now. Next to it, behind the horses and wagon, my gallery is the light-colored building. At that time it was James Patten’s fruit market, with a print shop upstairs, and in 1896 it was the Wingaersheek Cafe. On the other side from right to left are the present Gloucester Estate Buyers, Cafe Bishco, Stone Leaf, and the Bookstore. Boynton Way, now a walking street, was open to traffic.
