I often see this group playing volleyball together at Good Harbor Beach when out walking my sweet dog Rosie. Yesterday, more and more friends joined as the sun was setting and it looked like tons of fun. Thanks guys for not minding my taking snapshots!

Catherine Ryan submits City Arts and Gloucester updates for September
Hi Joey,
With Mayor Carolyn Kirk and the City’s leadership and support, here are some September updates for City Arts & Gloucester covering the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce, Community Development Downtown Work Plan, Harbortown Cultural District and the Committee for the Arts.
From now through October 15th submit a design for a Cape Ann license plate!
· The single most successful MA specialty license plate is…the one celebrating Massachusetts’ other Cape. The Cape and Islands plate, created in 1996, features an image of Eastham’s Nauset Lighthouse and the cliffs of Siasconset and Aquinnah. It has raised $20.1 million and was ordered for 45,000 cars in the state. At that time, the Registry of Motor Vehicles allowed backgrounds. The new image space requirements are smaller squares to the left of the number.
· Feeling competitive? There are currently more than 216,641 specialty license plates in circulation in the state now, according to the Registry. The five top sellers?
· What do you think the 2 letters should be?
· For more information on how to apply, see GMG announcement https://goodmorninggloucester.wordpress.com/2013/08/31/cape-ann-chamber-launches-drive-for-special-cape-ann-license-plate/

You can check out the results from the 2nd public presentation on line http://www.gloucester-ma.gov/index.aspx?NID=760&ART=2142&ADMIN=1. It is a large file and may take a couple of minutes to load. News from the downtown Harbortown Cultural District
Mayor Carolyn Kirk has committed the City’s major support as lead partner for our two Gloucester Cultural Districts!
Visit www.gloucesterharbortown.org
2/3 of the Harbortown partners have filled out a survey to prioritize goals with a focus on arts and culture. Other partners will complete theirs as they meet with their committees/boards. Example of one of the questions (‘in progress’ screen shot)
Harbortown partners and stakeholders attending the August meeting at Cape Ann Museum were lucky to hear an outstanding update from Director Ronda Faloon:
Reaching Out and Strengthening Within, Cape Ann Museum’s recently announced Capital Campaign will raise funds to make essential and innovative changes, dramatically improving the Museum’s ability to care for its nationally significant collection, as well as to tell the Cape Ann story and the pivotal role it has played in the American experience. Dynamic new interior and exterior spaces will be created. Outdated systems will be updated and underutilized spaces will be maximized to provide secure, more cost-effective and visitor-friendly settings for the collection. The Campaign will also support efforts to make the Museum’s collection more accessible by digitization, allowing it to be viewed on a redesigned website. Whether you are a physical or virtual visitor, the Museum hopes to transform your experience. http://www.capeannmuseum.org/support/capital-campaign/
We also participated in a special hands-on discussion and workshop about the goals for our district which was facilitated by Rebecca Borden Art Haven’s interim director. Art Haven and Cape Ann museum are founding partners of the Harbortown Cultural District.

Mayor’s Reception at the Schooner Festival

Riding with King Eider and the Schooners
Video: Time Lapse Parade of Sails Through Gloucester Inner Harbor
The taller ships start appearing around 1:50, but I liked seeing all the smaller boats, too. Look for the Stanley Thomas lobster boat closer to the beginning. After the Parade I walked out onto the rocky ledge near the Eastern Point Lighthouse, but as you can see in the second-to-last clip, a thunderstorm was on the way and I had to skedadle.
Beautiful Event to film-to many of us, Gloucester is our “somewhere over the rainbow.”

Curtis Sarkin From Maritime Gloucester Forwards This Info-
Joey,
Thanks so much for all the Gloucester Schooner Festival posts! Maritime Gloucester can’t wait to host this weekend!
The festival was highlighted in Boston Globe Magazine on Sunday!
The Gloucester Schooner Festival was named best Festival/Fair of 2013 by Northshore Magazine! Be sure to visit this weekend and see over twenty schooners in Gloucester Harbor. Northshore Magazine writes, “Given the long history of commercial and recreational boating in North Shore waters, it makes sense to recognize Gloucester’s Schooner Festival as the ultimate celebration of our maritime ties (in its 29th year, its glory is undeniable). With the goal of involving young people and supporting programs that get them on the water, all manner of vessels — new and old, large and small — take to the waters with sails flying high.”
Sail on a visiting schooner this weekend during the Gloucester Schooner Festival! Schooner Roseway, Schooner Virginia, and Schooner Tyrone will all be offering special sails out of Maritime Gloucester. You can also sail Schooner Ardelle, the flagship of Maritime Gloucester, for a great view of visiting schooners. Tickets are selling fast, so reserve a spot today!

Adventure Out For a Spin Today
Looked like 28 plus people onboard as it took off from Rocky Neck.
If you click on the photo and zoom in Norman’s Woe to the right and Boston skyline off the stern shot on an iPhone from the end of the Dogbar Breakwater.
While watching the Adventure sail off from Gloucester Marine Railways I started chatting with Jeff Thomas. His grandfather Jeff Thomas was the first captain of the Adventure and took it fishing on the banks from 1926 to 1934. It was in 1934 at the age of 59 that Jeff Thomas had a myocardial infarction (heart attack) while on the bow of his boat chopping ice that was building up on the gear. He made it back to the wheel before he died. They iced him with the fish and he made his way back to Gloucester from Nova Scotia by rail.
The names on the cenotaph (Man at the Wheel) are all real people of course. I see Peter Prybot’s name and know that. Those names are real all the way back for a lot of people of Gloucester.
Cape Ann and Gloucester is knee deep in history. You can’t turn around without tripping over it. It’s also walking around amongst us. All you have to do is listen.

Blue Shark Off Gloucester/Rockport Video
Kellen O’Maley shares with Good Morning Gloucester
We hooked up on a few Blue sharks this past week about 10 miles off of Rockport. Although we were in search of Bluefin Tuna, the sharks brought some excitement as Tuna fishing can become quite boring. Here is a clip of one of the sharks as it neared the boat and eventually snapped off to swim free (it looks better if you change the setting to HD720). The good news is there is plenty of feed out on the banks to keep these guys away from Good Harbor Beach! This same day we also heard Dave Jewell of http://ladyjfishingcharters.com hooked up on a bigger Blue shark that looked to be over 350 lbs!

Seafood Throwdown, Farmers Market, Live Music on Schooners and in the Streets. It’s still Summer folks!

Can you feel it? People trying to pack a whole summer into the last week before school starts, which seems to get earlier every year. It feels like there’s so much going on that every choice we make effectively says “No” to a dozen other things we’d like to do. Take today for instance. Live music starts at 11:30am at Stage Fort Park and continues into the night at restaurants, clubs, @ Shalin Liu, on schooners and in the streets. See the full live music schedule here.
Just in case that’s not enough for you, there’s also the Farmer’s Market at Stage Fort Park from 3-6:30 and today you can catch NAMA’s only Gloucester-based Seafood Throwdown of the year at 4:30 featuring a showdown between 2012 HarvestFest champs Gloucester’s Willow Rest and 2008 Genoa World Pesto champs Beverly’s Prides Osteria. Spectators get to taste the food so you really don’t want to miss this one!
See how much fun these Seafood Throwdowns are in this video by Joey from the 2010 epic rematch between Passports & Dog Bar.
Gloucester’s First Bike Lanes
Fred Bodin Submits-
I first noticed the Bike Lane on Rogers Street while driving home Saturday night after the Block Party. Today, I saw it again on Stacy Boulevard while leaving the Waterfront Festival. It runs the entire length of the Boulevard, but not on all of Rogers Street. I’m not used to dealing with innovation, except for a few trips thru Boston. I automatically drove my car in between the center line and the Bike Lane line. I think it’s a great idea.

Ann Straccia from Gloucester Ingredient List Makes Mario Batali’s First Video In His Batali Cooks 4 Series
Hi Joey
I hope you’re well and enjoying your summer. I wanted to reach out to you regarding a new video series we just launch entitled Batali Cooks 4, where we asked fans to send us their top 4 favorite ingredients using the hash #batalicooks4. Mario picked a list and created a custom recipe and video based on those picks.
In this inaugural video, mario chose a list from Ann Straccia of Gloucester which includes monkfish, artichokes, lemon and kale. Mario then created a custom recipe and video – where he walked viewers through all the steps of the recipe in his signature style – teaching us along the way.
