GMG Christmas Party
…and we all had a good time.

Tree Lighting and CATA, Where Art Thou?
I’ve never seen the lobster trap tree lighting, but today I was determined. After the 5pm lighting, I walked to the nearby bus stop, and was ten minutes early. Twenty minutes after the pickup time, still waiting, cold and shivering with my walker, I hobbled back to the gallery. What to do? I called Gloucester Taxi (978-283-0099) for a ride home to Rockport. It cost $11 plus tip ($5). I had a nice and smooth ride with driver Scott. Although CATA is 99% reliable, keep a $20 bill in your wallet, along with the Gloucester Taxi business card.

One Pirates Lane Sign Beautifully Recreated by Master Woodcarver David Calvo and Question for Our Local Historians and Long-Time Residents
Next time you are heading to East Gloucester or Rocky Neck, take a look at the striking new sign at One Pirates Lane, which was recently restored by Gloucester’s own David Calvo. David was commissioned to recreate the sign as the old one had rotted through and through; made of solid mahogany, the new sign will surely last a lifetime.
David’s studio is located at 235 East Main Street. Visit his website to see more of David’s outstanding portfolio of beautiful designs and workmanship here: David Calvo Studio
David shares a bit of history about the sign: The building was owned by Howard Richardson who ran his trade show design business there. The sign was done by Alfred Czerpak. Richardson and artist Czerepak attended Mass College of Art at the same time. Howard asked Alfred to make a sign for him. The original sign went up in 1981. Al was the name he went by and he lived in one of the homes behind Richardson’s business on Pirates Lane. Al pursued a painting career and also created many multi media pieces. Thank you Colleen and David for the information!
Questions for our old-timer GMG readers: We who live in the East Gloucester/Pirates Lane neighborhood have all heard that One Pirates Lane was at one time a Russian tea house. Can any of our readers confirm that and if so, share their recollections. We would love to know more and thank you so much for taking the time to write.

New Film: A Flight of Monarchs
When watching, know that the first two minutes of the film were shot in Gloucester. I think you will be dazzled by the sheer numbers of Monarchs that travel through Cape Ann’s backyards and meadows during the peak of migration.
I began photographing the Monarchs in 2006, which was a year when we had an extraordinary number of Monarchs visiting our shores. At that time, I became determined that if ever again this phenomenon were to occur on Cape Ann, I was going to have the ability to document on film, rather than only through still images, this beautiful event for my community. It’s hard to imagine without observing and here you can see what I have wanted to share.
A Flight of Monarchs begins on a September day as first one and then passels of Monarchs begin to arrive to the fields and meadows of Cape Ann, carried across Massachusetts Bay on a tailwind. By the early evening light they begin to pour into the surrounding trees, clustering to stay warm in the branches furthest away from the prevailing breezes. The following morning as the sun begins to touch their wings, they alight from the trees, seeking the freshest wildflowers from which to drink nectar to help build their lipid reserves for the several thousand mile journey south. They drink and drink until the last of the sun’s rays dip below the tree line. As they arrived on a tailwind, they again depart, and are carried to the next gathering area. For coastal Monarchs, Allens Pond, which is located in Westport, Massachusetts is often the next stop.
In the next scene, the butterflies have arrived to the sacred oyamel fir forests of Angangueo, Michoacán, deep in the heart of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. It’s early morning and the butterflies are suspended in great primordial branched clusters that may become so heavy from the weight of so many butterflies the boughs of the trees bend to the breaking point. Later in the day, as the sun begins to warm their wings, the butterflies begin to stir. During the winter, it is imperative that the Monarch’s body temperature remains relatively low. They leave the sunniest branches in search of shade and a drink of water from nearby mountain streams. Occasionally in late February, as the air temperatures begin to warm with the coming springtime, for a short period during the day, the butterflies leave the trees all at once. This phenomenon is called a butterfly “explosion,” and is a truly magnificent event to observe.
A Flight of Monarchs is set to the evocative and tender “Fields of Blue,” written and performed by composer and guitarist Jesse Cook and his band, to which permission was granted by the artist for the purpose of this short film. Here is a link to Cook’s website. I highly, highly recommend attending a live performance of Jesse Cook and Company. As was I, you will be completely taken by their gorgeous music, exquisite artistry, and with Cook’s songwriting, will travel in beautiful melodies inspired from around the world.
I am currently editing my feature length documentary, Beauty on the Wing, which after months and months of organizing and editing three years of footage, is currently running at approximately twelve hours in length. At eleven hours too long, I have a great deal of editing to accomplish in the coming winter months!
A Flight of Monarchs presented here is the shorter version of the film that I created for the Berkshire Museum’s “Butterflies” exhibit. The first version is six minutes long and played on a continuous loop in the main gallery of the exhibit hall. The longer version will soon be posted on Vimeo.
Linda rae has another outstanding trip in Gloucester
Pick what you find interesting, you have such great photographers around. We have gathered these memories to last for the long months ahead before we can visit in the Spring. We were amazed at the Gloucester Museum, especially the hall of fishermen families. What a great idea. Could have spent hours there. We always visit the railway marina to see the latest work going on. And then there was the day last winter in a Pennsylvania grocery store when Rob discovered this famous fellow and dragged him from aisle to aisle just to catch a big smile on my face. Needless to say, he was in the way of countless shoppers who weren’t as friendly as Gloucester people. And I was ready to pack our bags and head six hours to Gloucester. Congratulations on the excellent restoration of City Hall. Magnificent!
Just to reiterate something I posted before. Your Radio Shack is exceptional. Once again I called ahead to have Travis help me with my iPhone. Their staff and his technical expertise surpass even the Apple Store. And all with a smile. You are fortunate… Don’t lose it!
Have a gentle winter, we hope to visit four or five times again next year. Thank you for Good Morning Gloucester!!
The bridge is of our little town of Milford right across from Pennsylvania situated in the beautiful Delaware River Valley .
Blessings, Linda rae and Rob

One of the next steps includes casting a net far and wide for feedback from Gloucester visitors. Queue this on-line survey!

Please note that the deadline is in two weeks–no later than December 5, 2014. Good luck!
Editor’s note-
I find it funny on question 11 where they ask-
*How did you get your information on Gloucester? (Check all that apply)
That Good Morning Gloucester is not listed when we probably get more web traffic than all of the other listed sites combined.
If you do indeed feel that GMG is your source of Gloucester info for events then feel free to fill us in in the “other” option on question 11.

The restoration of the Phyllis A
Hi Joey,
The restoration of the Phyllis A continues in earnest at Gloucester Marine Railway. This week the iconic red pilot house, spars, and engine were removed. She is being lightened up before coming off the rails and then picked up on the big blue travel lift. There is a spot waiting for the Phyllis A in the parking lot, so she can have more extensive work done without tying up the railway. We are actively seeking volunteers to help with her restoration and to help with mailing and other office type work too. Please come by the Steel Drive behind Fosters on Saturday 8-4 to help support the Phyllis A’s restoration, while getting rid of your unwanted steel.
