As you may or may not have noticed, I try not to get political on the pages of GMG. That is because as I see it many people just can’t seem to deal with alternative political viewpoints and I don’t need folks hating on me if they happen to disagree on a particular issue.
These pages are for positive energy.
That being said I would like to share with you all something that people really ought to investigate as it WILL impact you and I feel COULD impact us all in a very favorable way.
First off here is the website that will give you the facts- Community Preservation Act Website
Some points that stuck out to me-
The median house value in Gloucester is $385,580. The owner of that home would pay $2.28 per month for the CPA and that is less than a large cup of coffee at Dunkies.
The money will be matched at 75% by the state and there is no where else that our tax dollars can get that kind of return.
The money would be used for such projects as restoring City Hall, School infrastructure, preserving open space and a myriad of other worthy causes.
Listen, I’m not telling you what to do. All I’m asking is for you to visit the website, inform yourself about what it’s all about and then make a decision for yourself.
If you have any other questions please contact these folks, I’m sure they would love to explain it to you-

Neighbors Michael Tocantis, a Gloucester builder, and Niaz Dorry, director of NAMA, square off at the October 2, 2008 Seafood Throwdown at Cape Ann Farmers’ Market in Gloucester. Secret seafood: Monkfish!
(Thanks Niaz for the heads up)
Here are the shackles and pins that connect the Western Venture’s groundlines to its net. YOu think this equipment has done some work?

If y’all think of it we will have a truck from Cape Ann Food Pantry up by CVS looking for dry and canned goods to feed needy families. Barbara Koen told me just the other day that the most selfish thing you can do for yourself is to give to others because you get so much more back in good juju. Let’s all pitch in and help feed some folks that could use the help this winter.

This photo was taken at B & N Fishing Gear on Maplewood Ave. They carry all types of clamps and hooks and industrial parts. You might feel intimidated to walk into a joint like this but you’ll save a bunch of money on these kinds of parts. They also carry heavy duty shovels that are great for snow. They are 100 times better than any plastic shovel you could buy at a hardware store because they are built to be used in heavy duty applications like the fishing industry.

Check out the new sign hanging at Dogtown Books. I didn’t notice until looking at the picture what it says underneath- “used and unusual”

Here’s Susie Byrd- Lobsterman extraodinaire. Susie had the option of taking the day off when her skipper John Herrick decided to stay in, or go fishing on another boat. Wanna guess which option she chose?
If you guessed go fishing, you’re right. She just can’t get enough. She just loves being out there on the water. I swear this girl has salt water running through her veins.

If you look at the photo below you can see how the barrels come up and onto that stainless steel rail system where they go up to that table and are sorted and dumped.

You see hauling stations like this aboard the boats on The Deadliest Catch. Open to the elements, not too fun in shitty weather conditions.

Craig and Jane are the couple who run Commercial-Fishing.org. They stopped down the dock the other day while in town which is always nice. I love it when people that dig GMG stop by to say hi. They were in town for a couple days and then were heading to New Bedford.
It doesn’t look like the weather in New Bedford is going to be very kid to them for the Seafood Festival they are having down there, but I hope they had a good time nonetheless. If you have any interest in commercial fishing you owe it to yourself to check out Craig’s site and get involved. There are forums and a whole slew of things you can check out there.
