RUNA At Old Sloop Coffeehouse June 7

RUNA

Have you ever heard a Celtic version of our national anthem?  Phildelphia-based contemporary Celtic ensemble RUNA recently performed their unique rendition to open a Phllies game.  You can see a video of the performance at http://wapc.mlb.com/play/?content_id=27218189&c_id=mlb.

RUNA will appear at Old Sloop Coffeehouse this Friday, June 7, at 7:30PM, with local Celtic favorites Bob and Jen Strom opening.  RUNA draws on the diverse musical backgrounds of its band members and offers a contemporary and refreshing approach to traditional and more recently composed Celtic material. Through their repertoire of both highly energetic and graceful, acoustic melodies, along with their fusion of music from Ireland, Scotland, Canada, and the United States, this vocal and instrumental ensemble gives its arrangements of traditional songs and tunes a fresh sound.  RUNA consists of vocalist and step-dancer, Shannon Lambert-Ryan of Philadelphia, Dublin-born guitarist Fionán de Barra, Cheryl Prashker of Montreal, Quebec on percussion, Dave Curley of Galway, Ireland on mandolin, vocals, bodhrán, and step-dancing, and Maggie Estes of Louisville, Kentucky on the fiddle. The band often performs with world-renowned guest musicians, including Isaac Alderson on the uilleann pipes, flutes, and whistles. Members of RUNA have played with Solas, Riverdance, Slide, Clannad, Fiddlers’sBid, Moya Brennan, Eileen Ivers, Hazel O’Conner, Full Frontal Folk, Keith & Kristyn Getty, BarcĂł, TĂ©ada, and the Guy Mendilow Band.

Bob and Jen Strom are active session players on the North Shore and have played at the First Saturday Contra Dance in Salem, the Irish Connections Festival, New Year’s Rockport Eve, The Boston Celtic Music Festival, the Salem Maritime Festival, and the Salem Arts Festival. Bob and Jen organized a benefit concert, Shamrock for HAWC, in support of HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change) for four years running, featuring some of the North Shore’s finest Celtic musicians.

The performance will be in the handicap-accessible Fellowship Hall of the First Congregational Church of Rockport at 12 School Street.  Tickets can be purchased in advance for $12 from the coffeehouse web site at oldsloopcoffeehouse.org, at Gloucester Music, and at Toad Hall Bookstore in Rockport.  The suggested donation at the door is $14 for adults, $9 for those 65 and older, $5 for those younger than 18, and $28 for a family.

Murder On Rocky Neck~ A slide show of the event on May 19, 2013

Murder on Rocky Neck

I have enjoyed every show that has been put on by Henry Allen as with the cast and crew. I was told the costumes were made by hand by Costume Designers: Amy-Beth Healey and Brenda Leahy. A work well done. I was totally delighted with it all.

Joanne

A few words from Henry Allen,

Murder On Rocky Neck, The Opera was an idea that came out of my Summer Stock Theatre Club that I do in July & August. The children wanted to write a murder mystery about Old Gloucester. We decided that the idea was so great that we should develop it further in the Young Playwrights Workshop, which we did. The libretto was written collaboratively by 5 kids, ages 9-13, and the music was written by 15 year old Derek Dupuis (Renee Dupuis’ cousin).

Every year I work with local kids to create a show that is inspired by where we live. The show will then become a main stage intergenerational production the following Season. We are already working on next year’s script.

Ensemble cast: Alex Becket, Scott Brown, Emma Cavaliere, Caroline Connolly, Shannon Connolly, Sadie Cook, Timothy Edwards, Olivia Francis, Genna Healey, Jay Healey, Henry Jacques, Shannon Kelly, Belle Muller, Rodney Perry, Matt Service, Peter Souza, Elizabeth Wagner, Brandon Waterman and David Wesson.

Crew: Director: Henry Allen; Music Director: John Eldridge; Assistant Director/Stage Manager: Timothy Edwards; Set Design: Fionn McWilliam and Mike Ryan; Costume Design: Amy-Beth Healey and Brenda Leahy; Lights & Sound Design: InterMediaUnlimited.
A work well done. I was totally delighted with it all.

You Don’t want to miss What Time Is It Mr. Fox ~ Friday May 31, 2013 @ 8:00pm

fox

What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? is making music that feels exposed and personal, but cinematic in scope. The Boston/NYC band blends baroque pop with soul noir, conjuring up something like the dark-tinged drama of Florence + The Machine, the roots of Aretha Franklin, and the songcraft of the Decemberists.

The first thing that listeners respond to is the soulful warmth and strength of lead-singer 3rian King’s gender-defying voice, which “can simmer in blues, tremble with high drama, and faint into a yawning croon,” according to Michael Brodeur of the Boston Phoenix. Next are the words, from deeply intimate songs to those that cross into a mystical realm, making the personal feel timeless and mythic.

Named after a Victorian children’s game, What Time Is It, Mr. Fox? can time-travel from the woods of Medieval France to a 1930s New Orleans jukejoint. The effect resembles a gay male Adele leading a steampunk parade of music-school renegades. The group sells out legendary clubs like Club Passim & Oberon (Cambridge, MA) and The Duplex (NYC) and recently earned the Critic’s Pick in Time Out NYC.
Its original song “Cold Rain” was covered by New Orleans Soul Queen, Irma Thomas on her Grammy-nominated CD “Simply Grand,” with the track earning high praise in Rolling Stone, USA Today & The Village Voice.

Mr. Fox’s own CD “Little Bit Of Blue” was just released in March 2013. This performance will feature a new music video by Harvard University animation professor and Mr. Fox Fury, Ruth Lingford, as well as a new music video by Emile Doucette, showcasing the many talents of students and teachers at the New England Center for Circus Arts in Brattleboro, VT.

Mr. Fox will be joined on stage by The Rockport High School Madrigal Choir, under the direction of Patti Pike. Mr. Fox fiddler and trumpeter, Nathan Cohen, works closely with Patti Pike in the Rockport Schools where he is director of orchestras from 4th-12th grade. This collaboration should prove to be an exciting evening for all.

Bob Franke with John Schindler~Old Sloop Coffee House~ April 6, 2013, 7:30 PM

Day of show suggested contribution: $12
65 or over: $7, under 18: $5, family: $24

BobFranke-small

Bob Franke’s songs are considered classics, fueled by his deep faith and the real-life lessons taught him by his 30-odd years of playing everywhere from concert halls to street corners. Bob has appeared in concert at coffeehouses, colleges, festivals, bars, streets, homes and churches in 33 states, four Canadian provinces and England. His concerts have appeared in lists of the top five musical events of the year chosen by critics in the Boston and San Francisco Bay areas. In 1990, he was nominated as an Outstanding Folk Act by the Boston Music Awards.

Consider this list: Peter, Paul and Mary; David Wilcox; John McCutcheon; Sally Rogers; Lui Collins; Garnet Rogers; June Tabor. These well-known artists (and many more) all sing and record Bob’s music. Seasoned veterans and novices alike are drawn to the complex, warm-hearted spirituality and captivatingly clear-cut melodies of Franke’s songs.
“It’s his integrity. I always think of Bob as if Emerson and Thoreau had picked up acoustic guitars and gotten into songwriting. There’s touches of Mark Twain and Buddy Holly in there, too.”

– Tom Paxton

JohnSchindler
Originally from Saint Louis Missouri, John Schindler was influenced early on by that town’s rhythm and blues and his Oklahoma mother’s singing. This funky start was drastically tempered by a nine-year stint in a Catholic seminary where silence and Gregorian chant were his daily bread. After leaving the brotherhood, and armed only with his vow of poverty, John moved to New England and pursued the path of an itinerant musician, playing in sundry bands and bad barrooms. It was during this time, he realized, that his audience could not understand Latin.

Winner of both the 2003 Boston Folk Festival Songwriting Contest and the 2006 Rose Garden Coffeehouse Song Contest, John has also been a finalist in many other song contests.
“John Schindler is full of wonderful, insightful songs that will find their way into the repertoire of other folksingers. John’s songs really connect!”

– Dick Pleasants, WUMB
