Sundown, Moonrise, and Sunup Eastern Point Gloucester Video From Kim Smith

Kim writes-

Looking for butterflies on Eastern Point and videotaping the sun setting as the moon was rising. I passed Niles Pond on the drive home and stopped to admire the moonglow over the water. The following dawn brought flaming red skies, a cygnet plaintively searching for its family, and a startlingly large (at least 2 feet in height) Black-crowned Night Heron. Quawking loudly as the sun began to rise, there was a half dozen more roosting in a nearby tree.

The Ramparts, Commodore Rouse, and the Schooner Niagara

The Ramparts, Eastern Point, circa 1900 Anonymous/ @Fredrik D. Bodin

Schooner Niagara, Eastern Point, circa 1898 Phelps/ @Fredrik D. Bodin

The Ramparts was built in 1896 on Eastern Point (Gloucester, MA) by Commodore Henry Rouse of Cleveland. Rouse was a railroad tycoon and commodore of the Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht Club of New York. In 1898, Rouse was visited by financier Howard Gould, the ninth richest man in America, on his Schooner Niagara. In the photo, Niagara sails off Eastern Point, with The Ramparts visible between the jib and the bowsprit. Ladies and gentlemen enjoy the outing, probably with Rouse aboard, and the man with the top hat just aft of the mainmast likely robber baron Gould himself.
Printed archivally from a scan of the original. Image # AD07-002 (Ramparts) and AD07-001 (Niagara)

So You Say You Know Gloucester? From Adam Bolonsky

Adam writes-

Here’s a quiz for all you locals out there in GMG land.

Can you read the navigation codes for the south lighthouse at Thachers Island off Rockport, the lighthouse at Eastern Point, and the light at the end of the Dogbar at the entrance to outer Gloucester Habor?

Here are the codes, taken from the images below:

1. Thacher’s Island south light:  FL R 5s 166ft 17m

2. Eastern Point lighthouse: FL 5s 57ft 20M

3. Dogbar light and horn: Oc R 4s 45ft 6M

First reader to give the correct answers gets to accompany Joey  "Baitmaker" Ciaramitaro on his next trip out of town to chop up yet another counterfeit lobster roll maker into tuna chum.

(By the way, you can download NOAA’s printable pdf navatigation chart of Rockport and Gloucester inshore waters for $2.75 at NOAA 13279)

Dropping Moorings Photo From Bill O’Connor

Hey Joe,

These guys were steaming around the outer harbor a few weeks ago dropping moorings.  They were pretty busy all afternoon, and were hitting spots between Rocky Neck and the breakwater. I’ve never seen this rig before, have you?

Thanks,

~Bill O’Connor

More info on the Gate Lodge on Niles Beach

Kim Smith sent this postcard with this note: “Can you please forward this image to Sharon for her Wood and Stone posting–no additional information on the back of the postcard. I thought she, and Deb also, might like to see an earlier incarnation of the Gate Lodge on Eastern Point.”

And a couple of  responses to my Wood and Stone post last week-

deb clarke says:

It’s the old gate house to the Niles Farm. one of Joe Garland’s books has the history to it.

I used to help Ida Tarbox (she used to live there) with her gardening years and years ago. we would bake soil in her oven for transplanting the house plants and have sherry in her sun room on sunday afternoons.

Shelagh says:

Read Joe Garland’s book about Eastern Point. The Gatehouse was built in 1888 by Eastern Point Associates, who bought Niles farm land and planned to build a big estate on Eastern Point. See the EPA logo and date 1888 on the stone arch above the (now) garage.

Thank you for the interesting information!       ~Sharon
