Clean City Initiative Earth Day Thank You’s

If you could put these pictures up and my earth day thank you that would be great, thanks so much for all you do. The Clean City Initiative would like to thank the die hard volunteers that came to our city- wide earth day cleanup at Stage Fort Park. It was not the ultimate weather out that day and to see all the hard workers that came to clean our city, well it was amazing. Special thanks goes out to Sharon Kishida from the DEP for her expertise in helping to coordinate getting the word out about our cleanup and the concert. From posters to recycling pins and more, Sharon got the job done.

Thanks to Chelsea Berry, Pete Lindberg, Jake Pardee, Charlee Bianchini and James Buhrendorf who put on a wonderful earth day concert for everyone at the Cape Ann Brew Pub. Louise Welch for designing the concert earth day posters for the concert and Hiltz Disposal for the recycling pins. The Beacon, Gloucester Daily Times, Good Morning Gloucester, Cape Ann T.V., Chamber of Commerce and Gloucester Maritime Center for advertising the event. The Willow Rest donated generously to the Food Pantry as we asked volunteers to bring fresh fruits and vegetables in honor of earth day.

Earth Day Fund-raising Whale Watch Trip

    The Whale Center of New England is proud to announce its annual Earth Day Whale Watch. The trip is a celebration of our commitment to conservation, and of the return of the humpback whales to New England; it also marks the start of our field season! This year’s trip is scheduled to run from 9 AM to 4 PM on Saturday May 7 (rain date May 8). The trip is a fundraiser for The Whale Center, and all proceeds go to our whale research and conservation programs.
    The humpback whales, which spend much of the winter in tropical seas in the West Indies, start to return in early April. Last year’s trip was great with lots of actively feeding humpback whales. This was the kick-off to a tremendous season that lasted throughout 2010. We’re hoping to have a similar kick-off in 2011!
    This year we are fortunate to have many Whale Center Alumni joining us to narrate the whale watch trip. You will have a day during which you will see great whale activity and learn a lot about the whales we study.
   The trip costs $55 for Whale Center members ($65 for non members); $45 for all children under age 12. Join when you make your reservation and get the member price for the cruise. We’ll provide free hot drinks and there’s a full galley on board. The large cabin on the vessel provides ample cover from the cold but we suggest you dress warmly!
    To make reservations for the Earth Day Whale Watch, please call our office at 978-281-6351. Space is limited, so make your reservations early. We look forward to seeing you on May 7th!

The Whale Center of New England (WCNE) was founded in 1980 to study the whales frequenting waters off the Massachusetts coast, especially Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. We conduct field research from our research vessel Mysticete, and from public whale watch boats.

Earth Day Celebration – April 23rd

Celebrate and Be Celebrated this Earth Day!

It has been a long winter and now that the snow has finally melted, it is time to give the City we love a good Spring Cleaning! So here is your chance!!   In observance of Earth Day we are asking folks to turn out for a citywide clean up on Saturday, April 23rd. And after you are done cleaning, you are invited to an Earth Day Concert featuring Chelsea Berry and friends at the Cape Ann Brewery from 6 to 8 pm!
Interested participants (all ages welcome!) should plan to meet at Stage Fort Park Visitors Center Saturday morning starting at 9 am until noon to pick up gloves and City provided yellow trash and clear recycling bags. A limited number of pick sticks will be available so volunteers are encouraged to bring their own tools if they want. The clean up will take place rain or shine. The Clean City Initiative will be focusing on Stage Fort Park from 9 to noon, the One Hour at a Time Gang will be working downtown, but the clean up is citywide and participants are encouraged to choose a public area in Gloucester they would like to see cleaned up. We are also asking different groups to reach out to their members and pick a problem area to clean that day. We will also have a list of suggested sites on hand, if folks need ideas.
The Concert!!
Berry Green Earth Day Concert April 23rd from 6 – 8 at The Brewery
Chelsea (Berry) will be doing an Earth Day Concert at The Brewery (from 6 to 8 pm) that night along with Pete Lindberg and Jake Pardee. Anyone can go, not just volunteers, but it is hoped that volunteers go and be celebrated for their work. All ages are welcome!

Trash to Treasure

Each time we do a major clean out at our house, I put a big box of stuff out by the side of the street and mark it with a FREE sign. It’s gratifying to see the “stuff”
slowly disappear from the box to be put to use in a new home. I looked out on Sunday evening and saw someone drive up to take the few remaining items and the container. Time to fill another box!! Happy Earth Day! Keep it alive!

Talk of the Times: ‘Green Buildings’ Tour today carries on Earth Day spirit

The formal observances of Earth Day were earlier this week, but the celebration continues today, just as environmental leaders hope its messages will continue throughout the year and beyond.

In connection with the launching of its new Web site, greenbuildessexcounty.org, focusing on “green building,” the Essex County Greenbelt organization is presenting a Green Buildings Tour today to give visitors a firsthand look at many of the buildings featured on their site.

Tours will be led by those most closely connected with each building, and will offer you the opportunity to ask questions and find out more about what these pioneers in green building have learned along the way.

The tour sites open today are:

Home of John Livermore, High Popples Road, Gloucester, 10:30 a.m. to noon. Sampling of green features: Larson Truss wall-framing system, solar hot water, R-76 insulation, rain barrels.

Latitude 43, Rogers Street, Gloucester, 2:30 to 4 p.m. Sampling of green features: radiant heat floor, high- efficiency appliances, waterless urinals, dual-flush water-saving valves on toilets, use of salvaged materials and environmentally-friendly building materials.

Essex County Greenbelt, 82 Eastern Ave., Essex, 1 to 2 p.m. Sampling of green features: solar panel array, high-efficiency HVAC, icynene insulation, rainwater recapture system, recycle and reused of materials.

The communities of Cape Ann are celebrating Earth Day with movies, organized cleanups, a whale watch and art activities while spreading environmentally friendly messages.

So whether you try to be “green” year-round, or just want to try for a day, there’s probably an activity suited to you.

Here’s what Cape Ann is doing to mark the 39th anniversary of Earth Day, which is April 22.

The Cape Ann Community Cinema (at the Gloucester Stage at 267 East Main Street in East Gloucester) is pleased to partner with Essex County Greenbelt and the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market in presenting GREEN DAYS, a week-long eco film festival to commemorate Earth Day. The series will feature a mix of thought-provoking films – some startling, some – about the environment and people who are working to create a sustainable future. The series begins the Wednesday before Earth Day (April 15) and culminates on Earth Day (April 22) with an evening gathering, appetizers and the warm and engaging film “The Real Dirt on Farmer John.”

Essex County Greenbelt, the Cape Ann Farmers’ Market and the Cape Ann Community Cinema are all organizations focused on strengthening our communities by connecting people to each other and to their local landscape.
Information about these organizations will be available at the event, along with light refreshments. Special promotional memberships will be available for attendees. Tickets for each film are $8.50 for adults, $7.00 for students and seniors. The films and showtimes are as follows:
