Attention All Local Bars- Send Me Your Info

I’ve been in contact with the developer of BarBird– an iPhone twitter and desktop app which will stream all tweets from you or about you into one iPhone app.  free publicity to get you the much deserved attention you deserve.

if you don’t have a twitter account, firstly, shame on you and secondly get a free twitter account in your bar’s name even if you only link your Bar’s Facebook stream to it you will be listed.  I’ve been assured by the developer.

I already have @minglewoodtav , @alchemybistro and @farmbargrille listed on their site, the more local joints we get listed the more our area will gain exposure.

Julie Geary Does Two New Years’ Appetizer Videos At The Taste of The Times

Pesto Terrine served with Semolina Bread

According to Julie, people get tired of seeing slices of cheddar and other cheeses laid out on a platter. This is a perfect cheese alternative for your party or entertaining to start out the New Year and you can combine all of the ingredients in several minutes. You can also make this a day or two ahead and keep in your refrigerator.

This Mediterranean style dish is also a little healthier than many other appetizers. Goat cheese, cream cheese, pesto and sun-dried tomatoes are layered into a bowl. Julie shows you a simple technique for getting it onto a plate for a perfect presentation. Perfect for 20 to 25 people if it is one of several appetizers.

Check out what they have to say about Gloucester and GoodMorningGloucester by clicking here

Here is an excerpt-

I was reading a fascinating article in NorthShore Life Magazine about the blog, “Good Morning, Gloucester” (An allusion obviously to ‘Good Morning, Vietnam’)     Contrary to its insinuation, this site is very exciting and upbeat.      I mean, Gloucester does nothing for me.     It’s home to a dying industry.    It’s infrastructure is deplorable and sagging, and it will never be a ‘Walking Town’.     But it’s ugly buildings contrasts sharply with its breathtaking harbor and drop-dead beaches.     And it has ROCKS!      Along with Rockport, you’ll never hear the US Corps of Engineers trying to save these shores.  (Which only makes me more green with envy.)

Chickity Check It!- New Heart of the Harbour Web Site

Peter Van Ness The Man Who Brought You Lats Summer’s Epic Ground Breaking Concert- “Celebrate Gloucester” On The Site Of I4C2 Tells How You Can Get Involved and Announces Gloucester Center for the Arts with 3000+ Lawn Seating.
Peter Writes-
Dear Joey,
We just launched a new Web site to make it easy for people to explore our ideas for Heart of the Harbour (I4-C2 development proposal).  See here: http://www.heartoftheharbour.com/
People can sign up for alerts (e.g., the City now plans to allow each group who proposed an idea to make a presentation in January and we’ll let people know when that is as soon as we find out).
Also, we want everyone in our community to own a piece of Heart of the Harbour, so we are exploring ways to offer a stake in Heart of the Harbour to everyone who wants to get involved—even if it is for a very small amount of money.  More info on that here: http://www.heartoftheharbour.com/Investment.cfm.
And of course we welcome comments.
Oh, just in case you’re making long-range plans, please keep a few dates open for the summer of 2013.  You MUST MC our big opening concert in the new Gloucester Center for the Arts with 3000+ lawn seating.  We won’t open without YOU!
Thanks for everything you do for our City …

White-throated Sparrow and Winter Moth Post From Kim Smith

White-throated Sparrow and Winter Moth

White-throated Sparrow Dining on Winter Moth Larvae

Last May my husband and I were delighted to discover a large flock of White-throated Sparrows (Zonotrichia albicolli) rumpusing about our garden. A chorus of choristers chortling My Sweet Canada, Canada, Canada or alternatively Old Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody, their clear, elegant notes were heard for several days and they were easily spotted rustling about the hedge, dining on safflower seeds from the ground below the bird feeder, and feasting on winter moth caterpillars in the trees. I believe it to be a fairly rare occurrence to observe a flock migrating this far east through Cape Ann. My East Gloucester neighbor Jen, who has a lovely garden even closer to the easternmost edges of the peninsula, reported same. Her flock also stayed for several days enjoying the winter moth caterpillar banquet found in her yard. Rather than walk or run, White-throated Sparrows hop, and we delighted in our all too brief encounter with this beautiful and entertaining “Whistler of the North.”

Local Resident Bo Cleary, Fitness Coach to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale of "The Fighter"

Local Resident Bo Cleary, Fitness Coach to Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale of "The Fighter," Premiers Fitness Video Series On Taste of the Times

In this first video demonstration, “Mitt Fitness,” Bo shows his training approach on how to use boxing to get in shape. Bo coached Mark and Christian before and during the filming of their latest movie, The Fighter, opening nationwide today. It has already received 6 Golden Globe nominations. In the movie, released today, December 17, 2010, Bo plays a policeman who breaks the hand of the main character played by Mark Wahlberg. The movie is based on the true story about the unlikely boxing champion from Lowell, Micky Ward.

Bo, currently living in Cape Ann, says that he has seen the movie and liked it a lot, and not just because he is in it. “It has a lot of drama, great acting by Mark as well as Christian Bale, who plays Micky Ward’s brother, Dicky Eklund. Besides that, it is a true story that happened right in our area.”

In this first video, Bo suggests starting in front of your mirror, moving your hands back and forth like a boxer does to train for a fight.

Sista Felicia’s Pinulata Recipe On the Gloucester Daily Times Website

If you grew up in a Sicilian or Italian household or ever went to one at this time of year you may remember having Pinulata.

This is an Italian holiday treat that you can make ahead and leave in serving dishes around your house. Felicia (Ciaramitaro) Mohan of Gloucester makes them, based on her grandmother Felicia’s recipe, as little bites of fried dough slathered in a honey-corn syrup mixture topped with bits of chocolate, toasted nuts and fresh cinnamon.

Lobster Trap Tree Wars Covered By The Associated Press

Lobster ports create Christmas trees — from traps

AP

Albert Carver AP – In this photo taken on Dec. 2, 2010, Albert Carver, looks at a 50-foot-tall Christmas tree made of lobster …

By CLARKE CANFIELD, Associated Press Clarke Canfield, Associated Press Sun Dec 5, 10:55 am ET

PORTLAND, Maine – Lobster fishermen are known for bragging about who has the fastest boat or the biggest pickup truck.

Now, some of the top lobster-fishing ports in New England are claiming bragging rights about who has the biggest and best Christmas tree created from lobster traps. As the holiday season gets into full swing, a new lobster trap tree in eastern Maine is stirring the pot.

Gloucester, Mass., started the trap-to-tree tradition 12 years ago, and Rockland, Maine, followed five years later. Both are threatening to be upstaged this year by the small lobstering town of Beals, Maine, which is getting into the act with a monster tree that stands 50 feet tall.

Be Kind to Your House and Garden

I must admit I am not the world’s greatest housekeeper. During the warmer months, we manage to keep our home tidy-enough by vacuuming, dusting, and mopping. Very time consuming household chores like washing and ironing curtains and slipcovers, scrubbing walls and woodwork, and polishing floor and furniture are relegated to the furthest corners of my mind. With gardens tucked-in for their winter respite, my thoughts turn to the holiday season and those cozy, nesting passions are reawakened. Cooking for friends and family is my favorite holiday activity, although prior to becoming immersed in the cooking life, I go on a cleaning tear.

Our wooden furniture was looking increasingly neglected, made worse by my mindset that I must go to a store and purchase furniture polish. That only proved frustrating because when shopping at the local grocery and hardware stores I could not find a single polish that provided the consumer with a list of ingredients. Furthermore, I had to ask myself why is it that I felt compelled to purchase furniture polish, especially since we already make so many of our own cleaning products from ingredients readily available from the pantry?

After only a very little experimenting the following is a recipe with which I am quite satisfied.

4 parts canola oil (or olive oil)

2 parts fresh lemon juice

2 parts white distilled vinegar

Optional: a few drops of almond and/or lemon extract

A Note About Amaryllis From Kim Smith

image

                                                                                 Amaryllis ‘Ambiance’

Dear Gardening Friends,

We have been blessed with a delightfully warm autumn, which has made these last few weeks in the garden a delight. As I am preparing gardens for their winter rest, my thoughts turn to the upcoming holidays and the winter blooms that will make the season all that much brighter. I hope you don’t mind—the following is from the chapter on Coaxing Winter Blooms, excerpted from Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities! With our son’s soccer team headed to the state finals, I haven’t had the ability to focus, spare time to write, or accomplish much of anything besides work. We’re all on pins and needles in anticipation of the Big Game Sunday night!

Warmest wishes and Season’s Greetings, Kim

P.S. Results of Sunday night’s game: CONGRATULATIONS VIKINGS, the new Division Three North Massachusetts State Champions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rockport Vikings 1, St.Mary’s, Lynn 0. Wednesday’s game against the winning southern region state champs will be held in Quincy at 5:00 pm. GO VIKINGS!

A Note About Amaryllis

Living in New England the year round, with our tiresomely long winter stretching miles before us, and then a typically late and fugitive, fleeting spring, we can become easily wrapped in those winter-blues. Fortunately for garden-makers, our thoughts give way to winter scapes of bare limbs and berries, Gold Finches and Cardinals, and plant cat-alogues to peruse. If you love to paint and write about flowers as do I, winter is a splendid time of year for both, as there is hardly any time devoted to the garden during colder months. I believe if we cared for a garden very much larger than ours, I would accomplish little of either writing or painting, for maintaining it would require just that much more time and energy.

Coaxing winter blooms is yet another way to circumvent those late winter doldrums. Most of us are familiar with the ease in which amaryllis (Hippeastrum) bulbs will bloom indoors. Placed in a pot with enough soil to come to the halfway point of the bulb, and set on a warm radiator, in several week’s time one will be cheered by the sight of a spring-green, pointed-tipped flower stalk poking through the inner layers of the plump brown bulbs. The emerging scapes provide a welcome promise with their warm-hued blossoms, a striking contrast against the cool light of winter.

Perhaps the popularity of the amaryllis is due both to their ease in cultivation and also for their ability to dazzle with colors of sizzling orange, clear reds and apple blossom pink. My aunt has a friend whose family has successfully cultivated the same bulb for decades. For continued success with an amaryllis, place the pot in the garden as soon as the weather is steadily warm. Allow the plant to grow through the summer, watering and fertilizing regularly. In the late summer or early fall and before the first frost, separate the bulb from the soil and store the bulb, on its side, in a cool dry spot—an unheated basement for example. The bulb should feel firm and fat again, not at all mushy. After a six-week rest, the amaryllis bulb is ready to re-pot and begin its blooming cycle again.  Excerpt Oh Garden of Fresh Possibilities! ~ Coaxing Winter Blooms.
