Cape Ann Winter Birding Weekend February 4-6th
Dear Joey,
Just a heads up to GMG readers about the Winter Birding Weekend organized by the Cape Ann Chamber and Mass Audubon February 4-6. It starts Friday afternoon with check in at the Elk’s Hall on the Back Shore and then an evening lecture by Chris Leahy on the winter birds of Cape Ann. Saturday morning and afternoon there are guided bus trips all over the Cape led by expert ornithologists, with stops back at the Elk’s for hot drinks and food and another slide presentation in the evening. There are also vendor booths set up with optics, bird carving, photography and many other related topics.
On Sunday morning we go out on the Privateer IV with Jay Frontiero at the wheel, an incredible opportunity to see pelagic birds otherwise invisible, Gannets, Grebes, maybe even a King Eider. We’ll be back in plenty of time for the Super Bowl, if anyone still cares.
As EJ would say, did you know there are more birds on Cape Ann in the winter than there are in the summer? There are, they are just harder to see. I have been a casual birder for many years, but I learned more about the birds around here in one weekend than I had in all the previous time. The opportunity to go out birding with the experts is not to be missed, whether one is a long time observer or just interested in another amazing aspect of our life in Gloucester. People on the tours are friendly and helpful. Dress warmly and bring binoculars if you have them, folks will help out if you don’t.

The sketchbook complete! from A&E Creative
JUST when I finally started to catch up on entries, another giant creative distraction took hold of me over the past few weeks: The Sketchbook Project.
Due to the weather and the massive influx of sketchbook delivers, the Art House Coop granted a 3 day extension. I’m sure (in fact I KNOW) that I wasn’t the only one who managed to complete this fabulous thing on time because of this; those 3 days were a god send. Yesterday, after numerous cuttings, pastings, scrappings, and adherings, I sent my newest pride and joy off to join the other 29,000 sketchbooks participating in this wonderful project.
Here’s a rough & tumbled scanned version of my beloved book. I have a bazillion more photos to be uploaded, but for now this will do.

What is Reiki?
Reiki is an ancient spiritual practice which helps to heal on physical, emotional and psychological level. In translation from Japanese language, Reiki means the Universal Life Force Energy. During a typical session, a client lies fully clothed on the massage table, while the practitioner slowly and systematically moves hands over the client’s body. Reiki brings deep relaxation, peace and general well being. Reiki helps to reduce stress, increase energy, lower heart rate and diastolic blood pressure. It facilitates to remove blockages in energy flow and the dispersal of toxins. Reiki helps the body in recovery after surgery and after chemotherapy.
What is Seichem?
Gentle healing energy similar to Reiki. In translation Seichem means Living Light Energy which empowers Reiki healing.

Whoever is not living on the Edge is taking up too much room

This poem was written by my dear friend, Bina Benestante. It epitomizes life on Cape Ann to me, so I wanted to share it with all of you. You have to read all the way to the end to catch the magic.
EDGE
(“Whoever is not living on the edge, is taking up too much room!”)
By Sabina Troger Benestante
Out on the edge again
One step away: a deep, steep abyss,
Yawning before my feet.
I’m standing on a towering cliff top,
High above the sea.
Gusts of cold wind whip my face
Spraying white foam on roaring waves
Forever breaking, breaking at the rough rock’s edge.
A carnivorous bird is shooting like an arrow
Down at some hapless creature of the sea
As suddenly the clouds rip open, like a ghoulish wound
A sunbeam crashes through, furrowing
A narrow band of fiery lava
Into the waves, stretching as far as the horizon
The wind is howling…
Other people exist in soft, lush valleys, I complain,
Above them clear blue skies, sweet air, a feathery cloud.
Completely cozy, they listen to the willows’ whispers,
Growing around a calm and shallow pond
Maybe next to a brook, sheltered by elms,
With flimsy butterflies, dancing above unruffled meadows
Of fragrant summer grass…
While I forever find myself just barely hanging in there
My nails like claws, clutching bare rock, and by my teeth’s skin merely holding on: Why me?
Yeah, God answered. But you have the view.
Happy New Year
Some Boston fireworks and New Year wishes for everyone here on Cape Ann (or wherever you are right now reading GMG).

Joey C. Emerges Victorious

This is an artistic portrayal of our fearless top dog GMG leader of the pack emerging victorious from his frigid Rocky Neck plunge into the icy water – smiling with head and tail held high.
I do plan to be there without my bathing suit and with my camera to catch some shots of how he and everyone really looks during and after their New Year’s Day plunge. It looks like Paul’s deal with the kidnapped Santa might actually pay off – the forecast is for sunny, almost balmy weather. Unfortunately, that won’t make the water any warmer.
