About an hour north of Boston on Cape Ann, Gloucester is the country’s oldest seaport and predates Boston and Salem. It was established as an English settlement in 1623, and today you can visit historic houses like the Cape Ann Historical Association. Gloucester’s scenic beauty has attracted many artists, including Winslow Homer, William Morris Hunt, Mark Rothko, Maurice Prendergast, and Edward Hopper. The Rocky Neck Art Colony—the first settled artist colony in the U.S.—has many contemporary artist studios and galleries.

Revels comes to Cape Ann Museum this Saturday 11AM

If you have never heard the Revels and you and your children are a little snowbound crazy you must go to Cape Ann Museum this Saturday at 11AM.  It’s free and the Revels has to be experienced. Audience participation becomes necessary. Do not be surprised if your family is dragged on stage to clog or something.

Details:

Join Revels Rep as they perform “A Celebration of the Sea,” an exuberant program exploring the lives of whalers during the great age of sail and their families who remained on shore. Beginning on the docks of New Bedford, the program includes packing for a journey; farewell to friends and family; shipboard work and entertainment; a whale hunt; a storm at sea, and a celebration of the sailors’ safe return.

Saturday January 29 at 11 AM.

hey there!
  i went to the Cape Ann Historical Museum on saturday afternoon to find that my paintings are not currently on exhibit.  Peter Vincent’s paintings greet you at the entrance to the Maritime Collection.  and in the upstairs hall, the bright wonderful world of Clara Wainwright.  There is a quilt of the world that is in progress.  the instructions say:  pick up a needle and make a stitch.  i will go back to do so, and i want to look at some etchings that caught my attention, as well as, the new aquisitions (2 bernard chaet seascapes are worth another look).

Criticism, Can YOU Take It?!

Criticism can be a scarey thing for an artist to take, yet this is the way we learn our trade, our craft. 
 
Just a few days ago an artist friend responded to the demonstrations that appeared here on GMG.  “What bothers me,”  she said, “is the Sharpie.”  I laughed and said:  “The erased sharpie?”  she said  “no, leaving the sharpie, it is not permanent.”  I smiled and said:  “Oh, that. it doesn’t bother me.  if the sharpie pigment detaches, so what? I don’t care if it is permanent.  (is anything ever permanent? no. truly, truly archival? no. why? time. change. impermanence says the buddha.)

He got his fare share of criticism, yet the Finns put up a monument to his musical genius! and now they critique the sculpture, some even call it ugly!

W. G. Brown’s Department Store

I was in the Cape Ann Historical Museum on 27 Pleasant Street, doing a project and came across a painting I had not seen in years.  W. G. Brown’s Department store was the place to buy that special gift, and hanging on the wall was this massive painting of the owner.

In the museum library, there it was on the wall where I was taking photos of old Captains Courageous books.  I extend many thanks to Rhonda Faloon and Stephanie Bucks who have helped me so much the past few days.

I thought I would share with your readers.

Tyler Devlin is a young artist and patron of Bananas (the vintage clothing store where i work part time). When I saw him a few weeks ago I surprised him by asking his name, because I was working on this drawing (then called a face with no name). I promised to post the progress for him. it is 8×8”

I did some digging and I found some info on a Artist whose work I Love. Her Name is Debbie Clarke. If you have ever have the chance, stop by the Cape Ann  Museum and see her “Fish Paintings”   Joey has posted some of those in the last few weeks. Photos don’t do her works Justice. She works in Mixed Media; Glass, Canvas, Egg Tempera, Gold Leaf and more.  Joey will have a Video up of her painting me in the Nude soon. Not!  Actually She will be doing a “Gesture Painting” I’m really looking forward to it. Here’s a few Examples of her Work and some Links you can follow her on. She’s also on Facebook.

Right now Debbie’s work “Chorus Line” is in The Saatchi Showdown, a online art competition. You  can  vote for Debbie’s entry until Sunday.

Snoop Maddie Mad Aboard The Schooner Adventure

Yesterday was one of those days that there was so much stuff to do you couldn’t possibly fit it all in.  Talk about lucky.  If you were in Gloucester yesterday you had a pick of about ten free awesome events to attend. Among them- The Schooner Adventure open house, The Judith Sargent Murray House, West End Sweets opened, The Charlie Lowe Exhibit at The Cape Ann Historical Museum. 

How lucky are we?  What town north of Boston have so much going on?  Count your blessings.
