Blackburn Challenge: Registration Closes this Saturday July 9

The epic silver jubilee 25th running of the Blackburn Challenge is Saturday July 23.  This oar or paddle human powered race in dory, kayak, outrigger canoe or even SUP; Stand Up Paddle, can enter this race around the entire circumference of Cape Ann.

Over 300 boats are all in. Registration ends this Saturday at midnight, July 9. Do not regret missing this race. Gloucester High School start, up the Annisquam, then clockwise all the way around until you paddle under the greasy pole finish line back in Gloucester Harbor. Besides the ability to say that you paddled around the entire island you get a cool Patagonia shirt you can proudly wear showing you completed the race.

Your humble scribe kayaked it last year and was a bit surprised that most every entrant took the race “seriously.” No duffers in the lot. All I wanted to do was finish before the beer keg was drained and I made it. The pulled pork sandwiches were dee-lish. This year I am taking Rubber Duck and my protege, Ed Collard, The House Doctor, around the island. Ed has kayaked exactly three times  in his life, (past four weeks), but he is pumped and may very well tow me over the line.

There will only be one 25th running of the Blackburn Challenge. Sign up now, do it for a charity, but find a vessel and a paddle, slap a GMG sticker on the bow and meet us July 23.

Register here.   Countdown here (18 days left!) My detailed map of course with all the pitfalls here.

Rubber Duck Quick Tip: No dory or boat? Check out Cape Ann Stand Up Paddle right on Pavilion Beach. I bet you could rent for the race, paddle over the finish line right to their rental location. Paddleboards get a head start at Blackburn Challenge!

THE 25th BLACKBURN CHALLENGE Coming July 23

The Blackburn Challenge, to be held on July 23 this year, is the premier human-powered open-water event on the east coast of North America. In 2011 the event will be especially exciting. Not only is it the silver anniversary running of the event, but is also the 6th annual North American Open Water Rowing Championship (NAOWRC).

One of the reasons why this event has been recognized as one of the best open water races in America is due to the venue – a 20 mile circumnavigation of Cape Ann Massachusetts – a course that inevitably serves up a wide variety of conditions on the water. The first three or so miles of the race are along the protected and tidal Annisquam River, resulting in something akin to a head race, but with plenty more interesting obstacles to avoid (mooring and navigation buoys, boats, docks, etc.) and a 17 mile open water race after it. Once the river empties into the open waters of Ipswich Bay, the wind strength and direction play a decisive role in determining the conditions of the day, which range from relative calm (it’s never a flat water event) to very rough (staying upright and afloat trump the idea of competition). The last couple of miles from the Dogbar Breakwater at the entrance of Gloucester Harbor to Pavillion Beach, are usually plagued by confused boat wakes from numerous fishing, whale watch and pleasure boats going in all directions. Each year at the Blackburn brings us a very different story, making the event so interesting for open-water aficionados. One thing that thankfully remains the same each year is the fun time after finishing – cold beer, massages, good music and food and the inevitable harrowing stories from the event. This is an event not to be missed!

GMG’s PAUL MORRISON ON HIS QUEST FOR BEER!

DSC_32_0221

Ed Collard is taking up a new challenge. Not food this time. Ed will be in a kayak at the starting line of the 25th running of the BlackBurn Challenge on Saturday, July 23rd. I told him there was beer and pulled pork at the greasy pole finish line and he said he would think about it. I mentioned cupcakes and he is all in.

Ed will be paddling in my last year’s craft the green one in this photo. I am making a slight upgrade to the white one.

We have 85 days left to get in shape as noted here on my timer. I use Lattof Farm Monkey Bread for my training regimen and I believe Ed just inhales everything.

Anyone else want to do a quick paddle around Cape Ann with a few hundred other boats in July? We should be able to find you something to sit in. It’s the Silver Jubilee running. Once in a lifetime.

Blackburn Challenge: 99 Days

It is now only 99 days until the Blackburn Challenge on Saturday July 23rd. The Silver Jubilee, 25th running of the “any human powered craft” race around Cape Ann. The Essex River Race, a 5.5 mile down the river around Cross Island and back is only 30 days from now on Saturday, May 14th.  Click the links for each race info. Essex registration is already open.

I think I will be enjoying the Essex race by eating breakfast overlooking the race. Post a comment if you know where the best Eggs Benedict are served on the river. By skipping the Essex I still have 99 days to get ready for the 21 miles of the Blackburn. Click here for my personal motivator page complete with  countdown to the day and a map.

Boating safety in small craft: Everyone wants to get out there and start practicing but there is a hidden danger even on very toasty days. The water is still only 42 F. While you are out kayaking, wear a PFD and always think of how you are going to get out of the water if you flip. That water does not give you much time. 50 minutes at 50 F is the rule of thumb. At 42 F, quite a bit shorter before getting back in the kayak is difficult. Do not go alone and wear a PFD.

But it will be warmer soon. For inspiration I look at a photo Paul Frontiero took of me in my new ride as I tested it out last summer. Last year I went all the way around in 5 hours, 30 minutes, 20 seconds in a 71 pound kayak. This one is 28 pounds. The engine just needs to trim down a bit and I’ll be smokin’.

199 Days to the 25th Blackburn Challenge

Saturday, July 23, 2011 is just 199 days away until the 25th running of the Blackburn Challenge. From Gloucester High School up the Annisquam River then all the way around Cape Ann until the turn at the Dogbar Breakwater signals just two more miles until the Greasy Pole finish line. Twenty miles and change total. If you finish under six hours you get nice cold IPA and a pork sandwich.

Last year I was in a 70 pound sea kayak. I made it for the beer. It was an amazing experience seeing the entire shoreline of Cape Ann in one shot. This year I have upgraded to a 28 pound kayak and now all I have to do is use the next 199 days to lose a little winter lard so I can fit in the thing and better my time.

Anyone else want to do it? All you have to do is find a craft one can paddle or row and a bit of stamina. You don’t need as much as Howard Blackburn had, just a morning’s paddle. You swam in Gloucester Harbor on the first day of the year. Here is your next challenge.

My Blackburn Challenge Timer.

Blackburn Challenge website.

Confirmed: 25th Blackburn Challenge is Saturday July 23, 2011

Mark your calendars. Donna Lind of the Cape Ann Rowing Club has confirmed today that the Silver Jubilee, 25th running of the Blackburn Challenge will be on Saturday, July 23, 2010. (I had posted a tentative date of July 16, make sure and scratch that out.)

The Blackburn Challenge is a twenty plus mile open water race around Cape Ann using any seaworthy oar or paddle powered craft. There were 300 craft that made it around in this summer’s race and likely more will be entered on the magic 25th running.

There are only 316 days, and 15 hours to get ready. I have a countdown timer for motivation here.

I made a google map of the course with notes here.

363 Days to the Blackburn Challenge 2011

Yesterday was a nice day to go for a paddle. Down the Annisquam with over 250 other boats was amazing. These people were serious. The high performance kayaks blow by then those six man outriggers, hut!, Hut! Felt great past Andrews point and wife and daughter can’t hail me because I am ahead of my schedule and off into Sandy Bay when they spot me.

Then I started hitting the wall. Sandy Bay seemed to take a bit of time and the finger and toe muscles started getting all twitchy. Gap Cove, Whale Cove, Folly Cove and out into the chop. By this time the west wind had kicked up and in a kayak it seemed like a washing machine with the echoes of waves crossing the predominate swell. Milk Island on my left would not go away. Paddle paddle paddle, look over and I can still see the damn gulls sitting on their eggs. Am I stuck on a lobster pot? Nope, I’ve blown a seal. Have you ever been to the Boston Marathon around Heartbreak Hill and watched someone crash and burn? They look like they are moving right along but then go all twitchy, bounce around trying to get rid of a muscle spasm and end up splayed out on someone’s front lawn? That would be me off Cape Hedge but there was no lawn to flail around on.

Ellen Degeneres in “Finding Nemo” kept playing in my head, “just keep swimming, just keep swimming”. Turn the corner at the end of the breakwater I felt like I spent a day getting down Gloucester Harbor. The frozen pea plant refused to get bigger. From Good Harbor to Gloucester Harbor I passed three boats which I think each one bailed once I blew their doors off. DNFs. I did finish, the lovely ladies on the committee boat cheered me on and I could still paddle on to Pavillion Beach. Getting out of the boat was another story but by the time I got to the beer keg there was plenty left and a yummy pork sandwich to boot.

363 days until Blackburn 2011. Both my boat and the occupant are going to upgrade by losing a few pounds. And I might get out there more than once and kayak some distance. I made it in a tad less than 5 and 1/2 hours. I can beat that.

I thought I would wake up this morning and not be able to move. But I actually feel great except for the very tops of my thighs that got royally sunburned. One place I forgot to spray sunblock. Went down to Andrews Point and took a few casts at sunrise but nothing happening. Sandy Bay looked different though as I could connect it up to the shoreline of Cape Ann from Annisquam all the way around to Gloucester Harbor.

Blackburn Challenge: my last training update before the big day.

I haven’t entered a contest wherin someone said ready, set, go, since sophomore year in high school. I participated in sports as a sedentary left handed pitcher. But in 4 Days, 16 hours, I’m signed up to be on a starting line in the Annisquam River for the Blackburn Challenge.

I might come to my senses soon. I think I have enough ballast from the Lattof Farm monkey bread for a steady paddle. Meanwhile I went for my last training paddle on Saturday morning. Hoop Pole Cove, around Andrews Point, bearing 163 to the Straightsmouth Gap, past Gap Cove, and Whale Cove. Off Loblolly Cove the bearing of 219 to Eastern Point pointed into a solid wall of fog. Self preservation kicked in and I turned tail into Loblolly. Mobileme back home is telling my wife I have paddled onto dry land and I get text message, “Want a ride?” Yup. 4.8 miles in 1 hour ten minutes. Could I keep that up for over four hours? My arms still worked on Sunday so who knows? Crossing Sandy Bay there were 3 foot swells quartering me, the wind was in my face and the current seemed to make the lobster buoys look like they might motor past me so there might be hope.

Sunday I was washing my polypropylene kayak with a power washer. Instead of smooth and dark green the bottom now looked like light green fur. It’s over fifteen years old and I’ve been banging it on rocks a bit. So I whip out a heat gun, (a heavy duty hair dryer) and try to blow dry a spot. The fuzz disappears and the surface is shiny! Cool. I then blow dry the whole bottom. Hopefully I didn’t overdue it. When I open the shop up next I might be looking at a cow needing milking draped over two saw horses. I dreamt about paddling a cow and the beer runs out before I make it under the greasy pole. What a nightmare.

But my only fear is that I get in someone’s way. 200 boats wanting to get down the Annisquam river all at once is a sight I have never seen. Jimmy T not winning the men’s dory singles because parts of my boat are stuck to his skeg is not how I want to make it to Pavillion Beach.

I added “The four temptations of Paul” to my google map of the course. (Click on the purple martian things. Hint: first one is at The Market Restaurant.) If you don’t see me on the course you can meet me for breakfast.

I need to post at least one photo. Here is my daughter in said kayak spring of 2006 in Cold Spring Harbor. Our mascot Phil McCrackin looking on:

17 days, 17 hours 17 minutes, 17 seconds Blackburn Challenge July 17

In January I posted 190 days to the Blackburn Challenge. 21 miles around Cape Ann with a paddle or an oar. Start my regime. I could do it.

Now there are only 17 days, 17 hours 17 minutes and 17 seconds left to July 17 when I am supposed to check in at 6 AM at the Gloucester High School parking lot. What was I drinking thinking?

I panicked yesterday and went to the kayak store to find an upgrade to my fifteen year old fuzzy green plastic kayak. Nothing really leapt off the wall to tell me a new boat could circle Cape Ann with ease and have plenty of time for a cold frosty after I made it under the greasy pole. My old reliable boat will have to do. I’ll shine that puppy up, slap a couple of GMG stickers on the bow, and it will slide through the water like greased lightning.

If you are thinking of watching from a specific spot just reply here and I will stick you on the map. Damon in “Glass Slipper” has Lanes Cove covered. My wife will be on Andrews Point. After that it’s touch and go. If you could supply a new set of arms or a cold frosty off Whale or Loblolly Cove I could then turn the corner and head for the Dogbar. (The bar by way of the breakwater.)

32 Days to Blackburn Challenge

69 are signed up. Many more will sign up before the July 3rd midnight deadline.

32 Days? How did that happen? I have to seriously stop doing anymore restaurant reviews, drop the fried clams, and get in my kayak.
Click Here to check out the race, enter the race, see the list of registered racers so you can print it out and cheer or laugh as they go under the greasy pole finish line.

If you don’t see me at the greasy pole stop by the Red Skiff in Rockport. I may have taken a detour. (Click map.)

Went swimming before Mr and Mrs Bathroom sign appeared!

Even if we were in Body Gloves it still counts. It was hot enough Sunday that we would dunk then sit on the rocks and get hot before doing it again. My goal is to beat the Rockport Mr and Mrs Bathroom sign each year and this time we did it.

The sign should be up this week. Please e-mail me when they sneak out there and if you can actually get a photo of who does it you would make my day. I think it is Rockport fairies putting out the sign that is the official beginning of summer.

Blackburn Challenge update: Registration for the July 17 race goes live on the Blackburn Challenge web site tomorrow, May 4.

I may come in last but I’ll have a low number.

Anyone want an earlier workout the Essex River Race is on May 15 and the registration is live.

Easter Peeps and a Hundred Days

I’ve led a very sheltered life since I have never put Easter Peeps in a microwave before. I corrected this missing part of my life this Easter.

It’s true, they plump when you cook them. After about 30 seconds I thought I was going to have peep faces squished up against the door but they ran out of steam at about four times normal size.

I tried to get my daughter to pop one in her mouth right out of the microwave but she wasn’t falling for it. Here I am twisting one of the peeps head off. They are actually edible after waving. I let this plate sit overnight and it became as hard as a rock. I might be able to use microwaved peeps to plug a hole in my basement.

This plateful of peeps is so colorful I now have it hanging on a wall. Peep Art.

Changing Gears: Today marks one hundred days until the Blackburn Challenge My training regimen only allowed me to eat one peep.

Hey Paul Morrison Can We Get An Update On Your Training Regimen?

Paul I know you threw down the gauntlet and asked folks to join you in training for the Blackburn Challenge.  I’ve been getting emails, phone calls, fax, smoke signals, text messages, pony express telegraphs, tweets and all other sorts of correspondence and they all want to know- How is Paul Morrison’s training going for the Blackburn Challenge?  So how ’bout an update ol chap?

After that Goal is Accomplished we have to start Helping out GMG’s own Paul Morrison cross the finish line at the 2010 Blackburn Challenge.

If you see Paul in any local Restaurants or Bars wish him luck and make sure he’s eating and drinking only the healthy stuff. The Challenge is only a few months away and we want Paul in top physical condition. Paul, Here’s a few Photos at the 2008 Blackburn Challenge finish line to inspire you.

166 Days to the Blackburn Challenge

Only 166 days before the Blackburn Challenge race all the way around Cape Ann by oar or paddle. Sitting here on a frigid Sunday morning it seems a long way off. I am publicizing that I will be in the race so that when race day dawns I actually get out of bed and get down to the Gloucester High School parking lot and go. If I chicken out I want non stop ridicule.

I’ve been messing around with my Mobileme account which is Apple’s way of adding some cute tricks to the iPhone. I can “find my phone” which shows a google map and indeed, it shows that it is in my car in my driveway. That’s kind of neat. If I can find a way to post a link to that google map without having to open my mobileme account to the public I will do that on race day. That way there might be someone tracking me as I meander around the island. And if I stop at Bearskin Neck to have a raisin cinnamon roll at Helmut’s Strudel you can stop there and taunt me until I get my butt back in my boat.
