Blackburn Open Studios, Sat & Sun

We’re opening our studios to visitors this weekend from 12 to 6 on both Saturday and Sunday. The space is in the Blackburn Building on Main Street in Gloucester. There will be a total of 5 artists in the building opening their spaces, so lots to see — and if you are coming from out of town, bring your bathing suit and head to the beach after, water has been wonderfully warm lately.

Come through the parking lot to the entrance at the back of the building, and take the elevator up to the 3rd floor. There will be signs pointing the way. 

I will have my vintage studio open, with lots of vintage clothes and accessories to browse.

After you stop by our studios hang around for the Gloucester Block party!

Fun free stuff: Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library this month

Hi Joey,

Get over to the library! This month, the Matz Gallery at the Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free library is featuring the creative proposals of 15 semi finalists artist/artist teams for the HarborWalk Public Art Challenge.

Gloucester Engineering and the Matz family created a lovely exhibition space and lobby!

Bring your kids and grandchildren. There are games and small prizes and discoveries for all ages. Here’s a printable sample “hidden pictures”.

Leave some extra time to admire more art at the library, the neighborhood quilts, the always excellent Children’s Library and programming, and the fountain. Remember to peer past the construction screen to see what’s coming! The exhibit is open when the library is open. Come for the 8:30AM opening time of the main library, and then head down to the Children’s room, which opens at 10AM. Tuesdays and Thursdays the library is open until 8pm.

Adults are welcome, too. Here are some of our city planners visiting with Utile while they’re working together on the downtown work plan.

She said she wasn’t coming back this year.  We didn’t believe it.  So here she is, back again for another season on Rocky Neck in her new location  (which is actually an old location that she was in years ago – Alma likes to move around).  You can find Alma McLaughlin this year at her new Alma’s Art & Antiques location at 75 Rocky Neck Ave #15 (next to The Rudder Restaurant in the space that was previously Kathy Archer’s White Bird Gallery).  Check out the ever-changing collection of beautiful art, jewelry, furnishings, knicknacks, etc. that she has.  She also has a wonderful space on the patio in back available for adults and children to paint and create.

Speaking of awards, another fun recognition for the HarborWalk was for a Golden Shoe Award, for the “City of Gloucester creatively getting Gloucester Walking”, presented 3.20.13. From Steve Winslow, Senior Project Manager Community Development,  “Every year WalkBoston recognizes communities that are making “major strides” to improve conditions for walking which is a wonderful endorsement of the great work around the HarborWalk, city planning, and community development.”

Cape Ann Museum, Gloucester Lyceum & Sawyer Free Library, Beauport, Sargent House Museum, Good Morning Gloucester (and GMG contributors!) and other local media, and so many other Gloucester partners collaborated in the process of creating content for the story moments and the mobile site and links. Trident Gallery mounts regular exhibitions and maintains an inventory of art with a Cape Ann story — works of art having a meaningful connection to Cape Ann, Massachusetts.

Meaningful connections to Cape Ann are diverse in kind: some works depict or transform scenes of the region; other works are profoundly rooted in the artist’s experiences of Cape Ann’s towns, landscapes, and sea horizons, and its vibrant matrix of interwoven communities.

Following this program, Trident Gallery shows original and limited-edition works art in all media, concentrating on paintings, works on paper, and photography. Gallery artists are both emerging and established, and most of them are living today and making their art on Cape Ann. A diversity of artistic styles — representational and abstract, traditional and contemporary — reflects the diversity of the artistic practices on Cape Ann. Gallery inventory reflects the full diversity of the art of Cape Ann; gallery exhibitions emphasize contemporary art.

Origami class at the Hive tonight!

Tonight, April 25, I will be teaching an origami class at The Hive at 7PM.  The cost is $15 students, $20 adults. Supplies are included.

The theme is “Spring!”  So I am going to offer a “menu” of models we can chose from, including flowers, butterflies, birds, and insects.  The ones in the photo are examples; which models we can do depends on the experience and skill of the workshop participants. I’ll have a range of difficulty from simple to high intermediate.

If you can’t make it to the class, don’t despair! I am hoping to teach classes at The Hive more often after June.  Also, I will be available for private lessons for individuals or groups at other locations if requested.

Committee for the Arts (CFTA) announces that 15 semifinalists have been selected for the first ever 2013 Gloucester MA HarborWalk Public Art Challenge

On behalf of the City of Gloucester , the Committee for the Arts (CFTA) announces that 15 semifinalists have been selected for the first ever 2013 Gloucester MA HarborWalk Public Art Challenge. Congratulations all!

This national call to artists received an overwhelming response, with over 150 project ideas submitted from artists here and across the country. Judging for round 1 was done anonymously. With only 3 awards available and so many thoughtful submissions, it was necessary that round 1 require further essential review time. Competition was very strong. The CFTA was impressed by the quality and effort of so many proposals. It’s exciting and a privilege to see so many ideas, and all with a focus on Gloucester. Sincere thanks are due to all of the artists who took the time to send in applications, and we appreciate their interest and support of this call.

What stage are we in the overall process?

The semi-finalists entries are in final review by the round 2 selection panel which is tasked with selecting the 3 finalists from the group of 15 semi-finalists. The distinguished 7 member jury panel covers a cross section of expertise and excellence and includes: John Bell, Business, Civic and Political Leader, Gloucester, MA; Andrée Bober, Landmarks Museum Director and Founder, The University of Texas at Austin, TX, http://landmarks.utexas.edu/ ; Phil Cusumano, Artist and Licensed Captain, Gloucester, MAhttp://www.philcusumanoart.com/; Morgan Faulds Pike, Artist, Gloucester, MA, http://morganfauldspike.com/; Trevor Smith, Curator of Contemporary Art, Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA, http://www.pem.org/; Peter Sollogub/Chris Muskopf, Architects, Cambridge Seven Associates, Cambridge, MA http://www.c7a.com/; and Jeff Weaver, Artist, Gloucester, MA, http://www.jeffweaverfineart.com/. We are grateful for the judges’ participation. We anticipate that the three winners will be announced May 2013. Soon thereafter, the Committee for the Arts will announce a special exhibition featuring all 15 semi-finalist entries and the panel’s selections (date, venue, & details are in the works). Stay tuned!
