Essex Heritage Announces Winners of 2018 Photo Contest
We are pleased to announce the winners of the 2018 Essex National Heritage Area Photo Contest. The annual photo contest encourages photographers of all levels to “capture” the living landscapes, unique places, and interesting people of Essex County, MA. The contest is presented in partnership with Hunt’s Photo & Video, the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission, and the National Park Service at Salem Maritime and Saugus Iron Works National Historic Sites.
From rocky coasts and harbors and rural farms to historic downtowns and parks, photographers vividly captured a variety of special places in Essex County for their award-winning submissions to this year’s contest. All of the photographs were taken within the Essex National Heritage Area and fell into the categories of “Off the Beaten Path,” “People of Essex County,” and “A Closer Look.”

Instagram Winners
New to the Essex Heritage Photo Contest was an Instagram category. Instagrammer were encouraged to tag photos that they took during 2018 with #essexheritagephotocontest. Over 450 photos were entered and 9 winners were selected for their stunning shots that captured the special quality of Essex County. Group Show in 2019 for the 2018 contest winners
The eleven winning images will be exhibited for one year at the National Park Service Visitor Center in Salem (2 New Liberty Street, Salem, MA 01970) and at the office of the Merrimack Valley Planning Commission (160 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830).

“A Sentimental Journey,” group exhibition was organized by local historian Jim McAllister to celebrate Salem’s art scene in the years between 1978 and 1992. Show includes Giles Laroche and many other local artists. – $30 for three pieces.
– Entrants may also submit up to 6 matted and sleeved prints for bin work.
– Entry will be capped when space is filled.

– Six foot tables are available for artists with table pieces. $30 for full table, $15 for half table. First come, first serve.

Here is a digital who’s who catalogue with portraits of the participating artists and scenes from the inaugural Cape Ann Art Show at the Beauport Hotel Gloucester, MA. The art fair and the hotel were jumping on this gorgeous evening. Original works of art (not reproductions) were priced under $100 and up from there. The artists and the hotel were so well prepared and joyous, I was compelled to record their effort. Apologies if I missed anyone. Globe critics pick their 42 favorite upcoming New England arts: 2 from Cape Ann
Boston Globe critics –Kate Tuttle (books); Zoe Madonna (classical music); Karen Campbell (dance); Loren King (film); Michael Andor Brodeur (pop music); Don Aucoin (theater); Malcom Gay (visual arts)– published an arts preview: “Globe Critics survey of 42 Essential art events in New England that you won’t want to miss this spring and summer.”
Congratulations to Rockport Chamber Music Festival and Clara Wainwright for making the list! Rockport Chamber Music Festival is June 2-July 9 at the Shalin Liu Performance Center. Clara Wainwright, artist and First Night Founder, is one of 8 artists selected for the 21st round of Art on the Marquee, the “massive three sided, seven screened, 80 foot tall marquee at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center” public art project. Look for that exhibit March 16-April 17.

This is the 25th Annual Benefit Art Exhibit and Sale to benefit Greenbelt’s local land conservation efforts.
Look for some of my new work there, along with the work of many wonderful artists who support the endeavors of Essex County Greenbelt in “conserving local farmland, wildlife habitat and scenic landscapes since 1961”.

Seacoast Nursing Home Opening Reception
These are some shots taken by Charlie Carroll at the Seacoast Nursing Home reception yesterday. This is a wonderful exhibit of 30 canvas giclee photos of local scenes donated by a number of Cape Ann photographers, and printed by Cape Ann Giclee, to be hung permanently in the Alzheimer’s Wing at Seacoast Nursing Home. Many of the residents and visitors came to the opening and really enjoyed the work.
For me, the highlight of the event was meeting Agnus MacQuade, 99 years young, who will turn 100 in January 2015. She was amazingly sharp and a pleasure to talk to. She was a student teacher at Lane School for a number of years and then taught at Salem State. She said she loves being at Seacoast Nursing Home.

Gloucester House St. Valentine’s Art Show
These are a few shots of the St. Valentine’s Art Show at the Gloucester House taken by Beth Williams. If you have a chance, do stop by and check it out. There is a great array of beautiful, affordable, unique cards and gift items by area artists. The Gloucester House (especially Lily Linquata for organizing so well and being so helpful) has been very generous to organize this show in their lovely function room at no charge to the artists. The show runs Friday and Saturday from 11:30am to 8:00pm and Sunday from 9:30am to 4:00pm. A nice reason to stop into the Gloucester House for a bowl of chowda or a seafood pizza and a beer or glass of wine, and check out some great Valentine’s Day gift ideas.

Flatrocks Gallery – a Little Out of the Way but Well Worth the Trip
The opening of Translucence at Flatrocks Gallery Friday night was extremely well attended, but not at all surprising for such an excellent show and gallery space. For us on this side of Cape Ann, it may seem a little out of the way, but it is well worth the trip over to Lanesville to see it. Gloucester’s art scene is just killing it!
