We were invited back to the William Haskell house at 11 Lincoln St for a spring visit this week. I was delighted to go back and revisit the house which was very pretty in the springtime greens. I met Rick, one of the new owners and he welcomed me to look around at the rooms available through AirBnB. This would certainly be a unique option for visitors! Tours of this historic house can be booked through this link with Vijay Joyce. It’s lovingly cared for and full of history for all to enjoy. Thank you Natalie and Richard for reaching out!
Down by the Riverside…
I had a meeting to discuss some upcoming posts (stay tuned!) and we decided to meet at Willow Rest on Holly Street because it’s cozy and convenient. I had a coffee and a pastry and just enjoyed looking around a bit as I waited for a short time. Jim and I don’t get over here enough! There’s a little bit of everything: prepared foods and fresh veggies along with pastries, local goods and frozen items. PLUS the neighborly hustle and bustle of the morning crowd! If you haven’t been in a while, it’s worth a stop.

On May 20, The Cape Ann Museum will be screening documentary Hopper: An American Love Story, in advance of the Museum’s July exhibition, Edward Hopper & Cape Ann: Illuminating an American Landscape.
The screening will be outdoors at the Cape Ann Museum Green, with seating on the lawn.
WHAT: In advance of the Cape Ann Museum’s July exhibition, Edward Hopper & Cape Ann: Illuminating an American Landscape including 60+ works presented in partnership with the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum will be screening Hopper: An American Love Story. This documentary film offers a deeper look into Hopper’s art, his life, and his relationships. Combined with expert interviews, diaries and a startling visual reflection of American life, the film features footage of Cape Ann, where Hopper created watercolors that earned his first critical acclaim, and contributions from Dr. Elliot Bostwick Davis, guest curator of Edward Hopper & Cape Ann. Collectively, these accounts bring to life one of America’s most influential artists.

WHERE: Cape Ann Museum Green, 13 Poplar St., Gloucester, MA
HOW: Attendance is free, but reservations are required, and space is limited. Register for the film screening here.
NOTE: The documentary film screening will be outdoors at the Cape Ann Museum Green, seating will be on the lawn, and attendees are invited to bring their own small lawn chairs or blankets. All parking will be at O’Maley Middle School with a shuttle. Due to the limited size of the driveway, please refrain from drop-offs. There is room on the shuttles to bring small beach chairs, blankets, or baskets with snacks. On-site parking is reserved for those with accessibility requirements. Local residents are encouraged, where possible, to walk or ride their bike.

The YMCA of the North Shore & Manchester-Essex Middle School blooms and grows with “The Sound of Music – youth edition” in May 2023. Heidi Dallin shares the lovely performance flyer for next week’s shows May 5, 6, and 7. Tickets can be purchased here.
The Sound of Music opened on Broadway in 1959–an instant smash hit and perennial cultural favorite ever since. It’s special when there’s any production on Cape Ann: Thanks to Russel Crouse, much of the stage musical was written during stints in their Annisquam neighborhood in Gloucester.
