Topside Grill Serving Al Fresco Tonight!

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let you know that tonight we have a beautiful outdoor seating area set up today for the block party!! Come enjoy dinner and cocktails on our patio an watch all the fun stuff going on around you. We will be accepting reservations as well if you want to guarantee yourself a spot. The Gloucester Block Party is a fun time where all of Main street closes down for the public to enjoy. All the store fronts stay open late and set up on the sidewalks. All the rest of the shops and restaurants do the same thing. There will also be entertainment and live music. The city does it 3 times a year (3rd Saturday of July, August, & September) If you haven’t checked it out yet, definitely try to come and see what it’s about!! Hopefully see you tonight 🙂

Thanks,

Doug Silva General Manager Topside Grill

Robert Louis Stevenson Quote of The Week From Greg Bover

July 20, 2012

image

To travel hopefully is a better thing than to arrive.

Born to a Scots family of lighthouse builders and the product of a strict Presbyterian upbringing, Stevenson suffered ill health his entire life. After a desultory attempt at an engineering degree, he devoted himself to his art, first as a travel writer and later, a poet. In his early twenties, he moved to the south of France for his health and wrote much of his best known work, including Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. He married an American woman, Fanny Osbourne, and moved to Saranac Lake in the Adirondacks. With the financial success of his novels he continued to search for a climate that would improve his health, traveling widely in the South Pacific, befriending the King of Hawaii, and eventually settling in Samoa. He spent much of his few remaining years working against the European missionaries and colonialists who dominated the politics of the islands, taking the name Tusitala (Storyteller). He died of cerebral hemorrhage at 44. During much of the twentieth century he was dismissed by academics as a writer of children’s adventure tales, even though Hemmingway, Kipling, Borges, Nabokov and Chesterton all cite his influence on their work.

Jujuba returns home safe and sound.

I received the news late yesterday that Jujuba had been returned home safe and sound to her owner. A local pet store contacted the owner  and that an older woman had the dog. I am so happy and thankful for such good news.

Fishermens Wives’ Memorial

Designed by Gloucester sculptor Morgan Faulds Pike, the statue captures the all too familiar pose of waiting-with-strength known to wives, mothers, daughters, and sisters of fishermen and mariners whose family members chose to go out to sea. The memorial is a reminder that while the men are out at sea, the women are active in the community engaged in the work of promoting and preserving the Gloucester and New England fishing industry and helping active and retired fishermen and their families live better lives.  When I look at this picture, the mother’s face and her children holding her hand and her shirt say it all.

Mug Up! and Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Support the Street Children of Senegal

Sunday 9:00-11:00 or so at Khan Studio & the Good Morning Gloucester Gallery.

Then have a psychic reading with Joy – she really is a very good reader.

Then go to Wendie Demuth Photography for her amazing Traveler’s Sale – so much amazing stuff for sale, including these really cool rice bag totes from Senegal.  Proceeds will be used by returning Peace Corps Volunteer and Gloucester native, Richard Ross (GHS Class of ’04) to help a Senegalese group implement a sustainable micro-enterprise opportunity.

Mackerel Sky

Lighthouse Beach and Ipswich Bay Panorama ~ Click to view full panorama

Last night we had a beautiful dinner at the home of one of our dearest friends, the Gale Family. Mom Kristina and daughter Sarah prepared a gorgeous dinner of salmon poached with a medley of vegetables, in parchment paper. I was too busy having fun and socializing and wish I had taken a photo of the salmon. We had sunset dessert on their west-facing porch, with its amazing views of Lighthouse Beach and Ipswich Bay.

See “Rock Stars of Gloucester” tonight ~ in the flesh and oil

Allen Estes ~ oil on canvas by Laureen Maher

Just in case you’ve been under a rock for the past couple of weeks and don’t know that Gloucester’s biggest block party ever starts at 6 tonight, you can click here to read some posts about it.  Okay, now you know.

Celebrating Gloucester’s extraordinary music scene has become a Block Party tradition — and we do it by putting musicians and dancers on the street, right in front of our celebrated shops and restaurants.  (see schedule here)

Fly Amero ~ oil on canvas by Laureen Maher

In this spirit, Laureen Maher will be putting her series of oils on canvas, entitled “Rock Stars of Gloucester” on display at Fred Bodin’s Historic Photo Gallery at 82 Main Street, right next to the Sargent Stage (see map here) where one of the rock stars in her collection, Allen Estes, will be performing with his son Dylan.

Other Rock Stars of Gloucester on display tonight (in oil) will be JB Amero, Dave Sag, Inge Berge, Willie Alexander featured with Greg Tower and Ed Savage, Rik Razdan featured with Lisa Marie — and Fly Amero (who may appear in the flesh with his sister, Linda, at the Franklin Stage).

So dine, dance and shop under the stars tonight in Gloucester.  You’ll have more fun than you think you deserve.

Magnolia to play The Harbor Loop Concert this coming Thursday 7-26-2012

Magnolia (now a 7 piece band) will be playing from 7-8 next Thursday?  We’ve evolved into a pop / alternative kind of sound, with roots stemming from a traditional folk/alt-country infused Americana sound.  It promises to be a great show, and will be our first show this year with our new lineup (new bass player and drummer).

Hi Joey:  Reading some  of the interesting comments this morning  We are all so proud and happy for Harold Burnham and his now famous Pinky Schooner Ardelle.  I took this photo of her before she left for her berth in Gloucester.  His recognition and award were well deserved.

Much to be grateful for today, Joey! A glorious day on Cape Ann with cooler weather capped by a gorgeous sunset from my meditation rock. May you enjoy a meditative moment reflecting upon this photo! Even moments of meditation can make a positive difference in our health and attitude. ;- ) I imagine you have many of those moments while out on the water with beautiful reflective sunrises, sunsets and moonrises on Cape Ann. Enjoy each day!   Peace,  Karen Pischke  www.dreamtimewellness.com.

Bagpipes in Rockport

I’m finally getting to my photos from the Firemen’s Parade in Rockport… This one was processed with CameraBag2. The effects are sort of like Instagram on steroids for desktop operating systems (without built-in social media functions).
