A low sun just managed to light up these two Great Blues.  Of course the background reveals they were somewhere beyond the bridge.  This was last week on Assateague Island shortly before sunset.  I’m hoping you will allow these Virginians to appear on GMG.   After all, most of our local GBHs have likely starred here already thanks to Kim, David and so many other talented photographers.

We’ve been averaging between 55,000 and 68,000 a day now.

About six months ago I think we were averaging around 48,000 a day.  Now we are almost consistently doing double the number of Gloucester Residents according to the last Census (28,789)source wikipedia census data

June 20, 2011 was the first day we ever surpassed the number of Gloucester residents.  Now we’re averaging double that on a consistent basis with some days bumping up against 80 and 90,000.

Doodads and Gadgets

doodads and gadgets

There was a boat at the Railways yesterday sporting all these strange looking doodads and gadgets.  Does anyone have any idea what kind of boat it might be and what all those doodads and gadgets are for?  I assume they are navigational things, but I don’t recall seeing anything looking quite like this before.

Ardelle DC 2012

Ardelle sails to DC & back!
Harold Burnham  & Friends
Tuesday, April 9, 7:30 p. m., Waterline Center, Essex Shipbuilding Museum, 66 Main Street, Essex, MA
Admission $8 members, $10 nonmembers
In 2012, Harold Burnham of Essex was awarded one of nine, 2012 National Endowment for the Arts Heritage Fellowships.  The Shipbuilding Museum is fortunate to have him and many of the group who worked on building Ardelle, and who also sailed with him to Washington DC, to talk and show their photos of the trip.
Ardelle left Gloucester on Sept. 25 and returned in middle October.  In between those days, there were harrowing winds and waves, a sail through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal, lots of goose & pies to eat, and the proud feeling of breezing up the Potomac river on a beautiful day to receive a prestigious honor.
On the return trip, Ardelle sailed to Fort McHenry in Baltimore, site of the battle that inspired our national anthem.  There she took part in a mock skirmish with other large and small sailing ships.  Come and learn more about these and other adventures of Ardelle’s trip to Washington to accept this impressive award.
Please join us on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 7:30 p. m. in the Waterline Center at the Shipbuilding Museum, Admission $8 members, $10 nonmembers.  Light refreshments will be served.
