First Spring weekend and over 2 dozen live shows on Cape Ann ~ Clickity Clack!

You know the season is upon us when there are 26 live shows over the weekend and most of the summer-only venues aren’t even open yet.  (If you’re a summer business, stop what ever you’re doing, take Paul & RD’s advice and let him know when you open: see here).

And just in case you’ve missed my incessant plugs for taking kids to live music, here we go again … shows start as early as 7pm tonight and tomorrow.  Then on Sunday it’s 8 different start-times in 8 1/2 hours:  11am, 2pm, 3, 5, 5:30, 6, 7 and 7:30.  See the complete weekend live music schedule here.

One of this weekend’s shows features Noise publisher/editor T Max, who’s got a new CD out soon.  And on that CD, is a new song Clickity Clack, which was inspired by a spontaneous burst of creativity from over a year ago, when we filmed his walk through Gloucester’s music scene (see the video series here).  Now he’s turned it into a clever romantic tragedy with an edge (see lyrics and chords here).

If you have seen the movie The Perfect Storm (or read the book on which it was based), then you should be well acquainted with the history of the Andrea Gail. If not, I’ll give you a little background:

The Andrea Gail was a longline fishing vessel built in 1979. She was homeported in Marblehead, Massachusetts, but usually sailed from Gloucester. On or around October 28, 1991, the Andrea Gail was caught in one of the worst storms to ever hit the North Atlantic, the so-called “Perfect Storm” of 1991. The Andrea Gail radioed her last position at around 6:00 PM on October 28, and then went silent.

Although the US and Canadian Coast Guards mounted a vigorous effort to rescue the crew of the Andrea Gail, searching almost 200,000 square nautical miles, the only items ever recovered were an EPIRB unit (a rescue beacon), several 55-gallon drums, and a few random pieces of flotsam.” CLICK HERE FOR MORE

     Wondering if we can get this posted to the blog.  For three shows only across the Easter weekend, we’re bringing in a Broadway actor named Bruce Kuhn who has developed a one-man show that tells the story of Jesus, word-for-word from the book of Luke, in good old King James English (which takes to the stage like Shakespeare!)  This is not just a church thing;  it’s a city of Gloucester thing; it’s a Cape Ann thing. The shows aren’t even going to be in a church — they’re taking place at the Gorton Theatre, in historic East Gloucester.

     The stories of Jesus have had an incredible impact on art, literature and theatre across the centuries, and it is our hope to enrich the life and culture of our city by bringing in this show to help our city celebrate Easter.  So we’re inviting everyone who might have once remembered going to Sunday School or Confirmation Class to come and remember what Easter is all about; or anyone who might be curious to hear Jesus in his own words and on his own terms; or anyone who just wants to see a fantastic show this Easter!  It’s a great way to get in touch with the story behind the holiday.  Tickets are available for $15 and can be purchased online at http://eastgloucester.org/brucekuhn.  With only three shows, tickets will go fast.  We wanted the GMG community to get the heads up!

Little Mermaid Jr Wraps Up At O’Maley

O’Maley Innovation Middle School Drama Club performed final show of Disney’s Little Mermaid Junior this past weekend

 This year’s cast and crew of over 100 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students, performed a total of seven shows, including one morning performance attended by all current Gloucester fifth graders.

Anna Vojtech and Roland Cornelis present paintings and sculpture in this not-to-be-missed two-week exhibition. We are looking forward to this landmark show that celebrates the work of two dedicated local artists who are partners in life. This is their first dual exhibition featuring abstract wood sculptures by Cornelis and paintings by Vojtech that cover a wide timeframe—some work dates from the 1980s. On Sunday, March 3rd, thousands of women attended the Centennial Women’s Suffrage March, and walked  from the Capitol to the Washington Monument in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the 1913 Women’s Suffrage March in which Alice Paul and many other suffragists demanded the right to vote the day before President Wilson’s inauguration in Washington D.C.  Read More About Annie Smith Peck and Hannah Kimberley on Hannah’s Blog.

suffrage-protest-1Hannah Scialdone-Kimberley is a professor of English and author currently creating a biography on Annie Smith Peck (she is also married to GMG’s own Craig Kimberley).  I had the pleasure to meet Hannah when she and Craig came to dinner, and very much enjoyed learning a bit about her biography-in-progress about Annie Smith Peck. About her interest in Peck, Hannah writes, “I first learned about Peck in 2007 via a poster that my father purchased for me in an antique shop that displays an image of her in her climbing costume and reads, “A Woman’s Place Is at the Top.” I had never before heard of Peck, but the image of her in her climbing costume was so striking that I set out to see who she was and what she had accomplished. After a bit of research, I became completely enthralled with Peck’s accomplishments, including her scholarship, her climbing career, her role in politics, and her longstanding commitment to the advancement of women’s rights.”  Annie Smith Peck Blog
