Brace Cove At Eastern Point Update From Gloucester Ma Chief of Police Len Campanello

Hi Joe,
Just to update your readers. We had a tragic event take place last evening just after 5pm. 2 individuals, a male and female (now identified as Evelyn Howe, 46, of Gloucester and David Machado, 49, of Rhode Island) were near the water at Brace Cove at Eastern Point when the sea apparently swept the male into the water, followed by the female. The weekend had brought us strong winds that had churned the sea up with heavy swells and apparently the two were caught off guard (we are still investigating this accident). The Coast Guard and Gloucester Police Boat were launched within moments of the 911 call and the two were found in the water, face down at approx.5:53pm. The Police Boat was recently refitted with new, more powerful engines, had it’s bottom hull resurfaced, and we had installed a FLEER heat signature identification system. This allowed us to reach the area of the accident, find the individuals and speed them back to land much quicker than our abilities had been in the past. The individuals were spotted in the water by GPD Officer Chris Frates and Officer Anthony Giacalone. While lifting the two out of the water, the Coast Guard simultaneously manuevered along side the GPD boat and boarded with two of their officers who performed CPR and lifesaving measures while we sped back to the Coast Guard Station and awaiting medical personnel. Despite the lifesaving efforts of the Coast Guard, Gloucester Police and Fire Departments and personnel at Addison Gilbert Hospital, they were unable to be resusitated.

This is a tragic event for the families of the two victims as well as the community. A very hard lesson from the sea that, while enormously beautiful and majestic, should always be approached and enjoyed with respect and extreme caution, as the ocean follows no rules or schedule and its unpredictability can cause this type of tragedy. Thanks and please keep the families of these two victims in your thoughts and prayers.

Murder on Rocky Neck, the Opera

Coming soon the Cultural Center at Rocky Neck: “Murder on Rocky Neck, the Musical” (tickets available here)!

“Travel back in time to 1870′s Gloucester, and lose yourself in this witty opera, a courtroom drama with a surprise ending – an original story entirely conceived and written by Henry Allen’s Young Playwrights, ages 9-13. The show features a beautiful original score by Derek Dupuis, age 16, who also composed the music for ‘Song of The Sea’. Murder On Rocky Neck, The Opera is appropriate for all ages!”

Here are some photos from a recent rehearsal:

It looks like it is going to be a really fun show!

“On a frosty Thursday morning on old Rocky Neck,
The artist Richard Bluewall was found drowned, by heck!
Whilst the children of the town pondered how he had died,
Court was in session with those being tried:
Was it Old Scurvy Crabwater killed poor Richard Bluewall?
Or was it Miss Sylvia DeSylvia who’s love conquered all?
Or perhaps Jesse Pomeroy, a boy of sixteen,
With suspicious demeanor and caught at the scene!
Star witness and actress, Alicia Linguiça,
Insists to the end,
That the murder was committed
By her former best friend!
With Judge Thaddeus Pudge
Presiding the case,
And the audience as jury putting justice in place,
Attorneys Paperwell, Rockwell, Scissorwell and Schute
Do their level best to condemn the brute.”

Glosta Strong Supporting Boston Strong!

On May 7th, The Cape Ann Brewing Company (CABC) will be hosting Glosta Strong Supporting Boston Strong, a fundraising event for victims of the Boston Marathon Bombing. Featuring entertainment by local artist and rising star Chelsea Berry and friends, CABC will be donating 50% of the proceeds as well as holding several raffles and a silent auction with all money raised going to The One Fund. “When tragedy hits anywhere it’s important for people and businesses alike to do their part to make a difference. With this attack hitting so close to home, it’s even more important that Gloucester stands up and supports our Boston brothers and sisters. This event is our small way of doing what we can”, CABC owner Jeremy Goldberg said. The event will be held at The Pub at Cape Ann Brewing, located at 11 Rogers St Gloucester, MA. Tthere will be a suggested donation at the door of $5.00.

Death Row Meal

With the overwhelming popularity of The Death Row Sub Post we roll out the Death Row Meal Post.

Same concept-

For this post to be successful you would leave a comment on it explaining what your choice would be.

If you were on Death Row on Cape Ann.  Going to be executed that night and the executioner gives you an option for one meal from any restaurant in town which meal would it be and from which joint?

Place your answer in the comment section below this post.

To leave a comment look directly below the post for the link that either says “Leave a comment” or “Comments with a number before it” ie: 21 Comments,  letting you know how many comments have already been left on that post

So many great options to choose from but I’m thinking it would have to be The Lobster Risotto at Duckworth’s Bistrot.

Audrey Hepburn Quote Of The Week From Greg Bover

May 4, 2013

“You can tell more about a person by what he says about others than you can by what others say about him.”

Audrey Hepburn (1929-1993)

image

Born in Belgium to an Austrian father and a mother from the royal family of the Netherlands, Hepburn studied to be a ballet dancer before beginning her cinema and stage career. Her films include Gigi, Roman Holiday, Charade and Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She is one of a handful of people to have been awarded a Tony, an Emmy, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, and an Oscar. Famous for her elfin good looks, her collaboration with designer Hubert de Givenchy set the style for women’s high fashion in the 1950’s, and helped to popularize the iconic “little black dress.” In later life she devoted herself to work with UNICEF and was recognized for her commitment with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1992.

Want to Drive Joey Bat Shit Crazy?

Send him photos of anything that looks like a Rubber Duck.

duckstew

Mark Destino sent him this one of what looks like a Rubber Duck made out of GMO golden rice perched atop a lovely stew. Joey gets dozens of these a day and it drives him up a wall. Every once in a while he sends one on to me to show me how I have denigrated the original mascot of GMG, Homie the Seagull, with these monstrously annoying Rubber Ducks.

The only other thing that drives him up a wall even faster is if people send him Rubber Ducks. Going to Amazon there are plenty of links for multiple Rubber Ducks which you can then send to the dock:

Meanwhile negotiations for a Gloucester visit of the 56 foot Rubber Duck which is currently in Hong Kong are stalled.  Please contact Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and plead with him that the Rubber Duck needs to stop in Gloucester, MA.

Europe Bans Bee-Harming Pesticides

Europe took a significant step as a majority of EU member states voted for a partial ban of three bee-killer pesticides. This, despite fierce behind-the-scenes lobbying from insecticide firms Syngenta and Bayer.  “A series of high-profile scientific studies has linked neonicotinoids to huge losses in the number of queens produced and big increases in “disappeared” bees – those that fail to return from foraging trips. Pesticide manufacturers and UK ministers have argued that the science is inconclusive and that a ban would harm food production, but conservationists say harm stemming from dying pollinators is even greater.” (The Guardian, UK).

It  is a landmark vote and was supported by petitions signed by millions of people.  Although it is only a two year ban, the hope is the ban will give the beleaguered bee a break, and allow time for reexamination of data. Under the EU measures, restricions on the following apply: for treating seeds, soil and leaves on flowering crops attractive to bees such as corn, sunflowers and rapeseed (the source of canola oil). The products may still be used on crops like winter wheat for which the danger to bees is deemed to be small. Use by home gardeners will be prohibited.

The three banned insecticides are imidacloprid, thiametoxam, and clothianidin. The neonicotinoid I see commonly listed on pesticides that are readily available to the home gardener is imidacloprid. I urge every home gardener not to use pesticides. I don’t use them, ever, in my own garden, and never in both the private and public gardens that I design and maintain. Several years ago, I reported that Alain Baraton, the head gardener at the Palace of Versailles stopped using pesticides at the palace gardens. Within the year, a natural balance began to take hold in the gardens, including the return of songbirds to the gardens which in turn eat the insects. If the no-pesticide policy is successful at Versailles, which receives millions upon millions of annual visitors, a pestide ban can certainly be implemented for our private homes and public spaces.

A dear friend of mine, Heidi Kost-Gross, is Vice Chair of the Natural Resources Commission for the Town of Wellesley (garden club readers–she is also President of the Federated Garden Club of Massachusetts). Heidi has been instrumental in pesticide reduction throughout Massachusetts. The Wellesley Natural Resources Commission has created an outstanding Pesticide Reduction Resource Guide for Citizens and Municipalities of Massachusetts, which is available for free to distribute anything found in the guide.
