Awesome Gloucester encourages and supports projects intended to add Awesomeness to Gloucester in any of the following areas: (1) maritime related industry and economy, (2) preservation of maritime heritage and culture, and (3) community togetherness and appreciation.
If you have an idea for an Awesome project you’d like for us to fund, simply fill in this form before the 15th of each month:
www.awesomefoundation.org/en/submissions/new
[NOTE: WE’LL START ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS IN SEPTEMBER.]
We get together on the last Thursday of every month to narrow down the field and decide the winner. After that meeting, we announce a list of Finalists by posting them on our Facebook Page.
A few days after we post the Finalists on Facebook, we’ll announce the winner! Lots of times we’ll host a party for the Finalists where we’ll hand over the $1,000 micro-grant in person and in cash.”

Gloucester HarborWalk Tulip Tree Image to Travel Around the World
Recently Joey was contacted by The Field Museum in Chicago about a GMG post from May 2012. They were interested in acquiring an image of mine from a post about our beautiful HarborWalk Tulip Trees, planted at St. Peter’s Square.
Tulip Tree at the Gloucester HarborWalk Butterfly Garden
The Field Museum is currently developing an engaging new scientific exhibition on the topic of Biomechanics that will debut in the spring of 2014. Led by the curatorial efforts of Field Museum Curator of Zoology, Dr. Mark Westneat, the exhibition will explore the science of looking at living things as machines built by nature and evolution. One of the topics presented includes wind and how the leaves of a tree change in the wind.

Phi Kappa Sigma Back Again For Lobster Rush Week
Its gotta be a dozen or more years running the men from Phi Kappa Sigma come down to Captain Joe’s for Rush week lobsters.
Tradition. Gotta love it!
If you’re a prospective pledge and you don’t go with PHI KAPPA SIGMA you really need to reevaluate your whole college existence.
Just drop out and become a garbage man already because you’re not college material.
Here they are back in 2008-
Rush Phi Kappa Sigma At MIT!
The boys from Phi Kappa Sigma at MIT come every year for rush week to pick up a ton of lobsters to serve prospective rushees.
I thought MIT was primarily an engineering school but apparently they have their marketing down pretty good too!

Auditions for Honors Youth Choir – Sept 12 & 19
Honors Youth Choir
Auditions for Honors Youth Choir will be held on:
- Thursday, Sept. 12th at the Rockport Baptist Church 4:00
- Thursday, Sept. 19th at Ascension Memorial Church – Ipswich 3:30 followed by the first rehearsal.
Honors Youth Choir is sponsored by Chorus North Shore.
Students pay no tuition.
Ages are: 10 thru high school.
If you have any questions, please call Sonja Pryor [978-356-4713] or
Mary Sepich [978-468-2841] or [mssepich@verizon.net]
Over the years, Chorus North Shore has worked with local area schools to promote choral singing by inviting students to sing with us for credit, and by offering scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to further their interest in music. But, our strategic plan required a more focused approach toward educational outreach.
As a community arts organization, we are particularly sensitive to the cutbacks in funding and support that have steadily eroded the music programs in schools throughout the North Shore. The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore is a fully funded program allowing children aged 10 through high school the opportunity to learn and perform choral masterworks along with Chorus North Shore, and present extraordinary concerts on their own.
By establishing The Honors Youth Choir of Chorus North Shore, we are able to accomplish several goals for Chorus North Shore:
- provide an avenue for young singers to learn basic vocal techniques and ear training
- introduce young singers to a life-long love of choral music
- offer an opportunity for a children’s choir to work with a premier adult chorus and orchestra
- reach out to a new audience in the communities we serve
The Honors Youth Choir is selected by audition. The students range from ages 10 through high school, and must attend scheduled rehearsals and concerts. The Chorus North Shore artistic director, Sonja Dahlgren Pryor and associate conductor, Mary Sepich bring their experience as life long educators and musicians to the planning and development of this special group.
Songwriting legend Ellis Paul at Old Sloop on Friday
The folks at Old Sloop took the summer off, but are back in the concert business with a bang this Friday presenting one of the most celebrated Boston-based songwriters alive today, Ellis Paul with Berklee’s Susan Cattaneo opening.
You can often get Old Sloop tickets at the door, but that’s not likely for this one. So you might as well get them here (plus you’ll save $4). Check out the performer videos below!
Good Harbor By BZ Niditch
Dear Joey,
A good friend of Gloucester and Good Morning suggested I send my poem to you.
My best,
BZ Niditch
GOOD HARBOR
On full high tide
ocean voices
in a slight breeze
are never forgotten
by slanting shadows
splashing the tides
of childhood memory
breathing in the sea
by hand fulls of waves
near sand castles
on dawn blankets
of a consumed sun,
never too late for a swim
one more time.
