The sand has been so low at Good Harbor Beach lately! Today I noticed that the remnants of a rock wall and pilings are now exposed. (They’re across the creek from the grassy area of the Bass Rock Beach Club.) I’ve never seen these before, and wondered if they’re part of the old second footbridge. Perhaps Fred Bodin has an archival image of this to share. The rocks are mortared, and there are two more pilings sticking up between the wall and the creek (by the people’s feet in the photo).

Recently Paul Frontier put out a call for selfies, which got me thinking about selfies in general. I love seeing people’s selfies, and as an artist (the original self-portrait-makers!) I would love to see even more selfies.
I asked my sweet terrier Rosalicious if she’d consider making a selfie and promised for her efforts that we’d post hers on Good Morning Gloucester. She jumped at the opportunity for the extra attention and gave it a whirl with my cell phone (she’s not that good at it but I don’t have the heart to tell her so, and besides, a promise is a promise).
The above selfie is her ‘best of the bunch’ I think. It reminds me of Mariah Carey’s #Beautiful video, featuring Miquel, where Mariah is bathed in ethereal late day light.

A few shots of the amazing soft opening of The Studio Restaurant today on Rocky Neck. The place is gorgeous. Dennis Dyer, his contractor and staff have done an amazing job transforming a Rocky Neck landmark and historic site into a first class restaurant experience, and don’t appear to have spared any expense in doing so. If you missed the soft opening today, you still have another chance before The Studio closes for the season. Next weekend (Columbus Day weekend), The Studio will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 – 8:00pm. It will be buffet style service for a minimal charge of $10, plus cash bar. If you’re into sports, there are two large screens for your viewing pleasure at the bar. Even the spruced up empty deck beckons us in anticipation of next year’s summer fun on Rocky Neck.
No, not another accident in my neighborhood! This happened less than 2 hours ago. A 2001 VW came down Center Street and wasn’t able to stop before hitting this car. No injuries. I was told that the Honda may have a broken rear axel, which could mean it’s totaled, but it was driven away to it’s driveway in East Gloucester.Here’s the owner of the Honda that was hit, Robin Vaneck with her daughter Sophia. She just had her hair done at the West End Salon by Diane, who has cut my hair for the past 20+ years. What was amazing about Robin is that she wasn’t bummed about the unfortunate accident. She smiled and had a positive attitude the entire time. Look at the photo: Daughter like mother? I’d say so.

Ok, so I am so far behind in posting. I really need an extra couple of hours in a day to get everything I would like to get done. So, from Boston we headed north to Gloucester, MA. I have to say a few things, it’s a little slice of heaven on earth and if you have any interested in the area, or you want to see beautiful photography and many times have a good laugh; you have to check out the blog Good Morning Gloucester. Lots of information and lots of fun! Joey C. and all his contributors will keep you up to date with what is happening in the region and post breathtaking pictures. You can also check out some area webcams. There are polls, videos, podcasts, general information about the area and rants that have made this the best blog out there – check it out! As for Gloucester, it is a great place to go. Great food, great entertainment, too many festivals to name, really friendly people and views that are just simply amazing.

Join Kate Tarlow Morgan at the Gloucester Writers Center on October 9th and November 13th from 7-9 pm in two workshops on the idea of Proprioception. Less of a class and more of a lab to explore an “approach” the workshops will delve into both poetic and physiologic arenas through demonstrations and practice of proprioception as neurological response and readings of Proprioception, as the text by Charles Olson. These workshops hope to be ongoing so as to build a language together and ‘unclose’ the subject. Bring Comfy clothes, a notebook and Olsen’s Proprioception. Chinese Mantis ~ Mantises have two spiked forelegs called “raptorial legs” that are used for grasping and securing captured prey.
The Truth About Praying Mantises ~
Are praying mantis beneficial to your garden? Yes and no, depending on which species of mantis you are referring. There are over 20 species native to the United States however, the mantises seen most frequently in our region are the European Mantis (Mantis religiosa) and the Chinese Mantis (Tenodera aridfolia sinensis), which were introduced to the United States in 1895 as biocontrols against other insects. They are generalist feeders and are not very effective at pest control. Mantids eat the hummingbird and bee as well as the pest. They also eat each other! The Chinese and European Mantises are fascinating creatures, but I would not purchase and release them into my garden. Chinese Mantis egg cases are easy to find in the fall. Look for the cases (called ootheca) in fields of goldenrod and Rosa rugosa.
Chinese Mantids have trianular-shaped heads with large compound eyes and three simple eyes between the antennae. Much research has been conducted on mantis eyesight. As do most mammalian predators, the mantis is capable of full stereoscopic vision and they are the only insects able to rotate their head a full 180 degrees.
In the second photo you can see the Chinese Mantis’s head is pivoting backward at a very narrow angle!

Interesting note ~ A type of kung fu called Praying Mantis Kung Fu was developed in the Shandong province in the mid-16oos, and is said to be inspired by the quick movements and hunting techniques of the Chinese Mantis.
