Our Friend Marty, Special in Many Ways!

It's always good to see Marty and his wife Barbara. We are former New Yorkers, born and raised in the Manhattan area, lived in upstate NY, and ended up here in paradiise: Cape Ann. But a love of photography is the the glue of the friendship between Marty and I. Every day ar 5 pm, I eagerly view his posts on Good Morning Gloucester.

Dusky Leadership Cgallenge

Since its founding, Addison Gilbert Hospital has benefited from a tradition of community partnership and generous philanthropic support, which has kept our hospital thriving and the Cape Ann community safe and healthy. Lives are saved and bodies are healed there every day.

As part of Addison Gilbert’s future planning, the hospital intends to invest in new equipment, technologies and programs that will help to keep pace with a rapidly changing healthcare landscape that offers dramatic improvements in medicine. For those of us who consider Cape Ann home, whether year round or for part of the year, this translates into better care and better outcomes.

To support these goals and the overall health of the community, the Dusky Foundation has announced the $350,000 Dusky Leadership Challenge. We invite you to join us and others by becoming a member of the Addison Gilbert Society, a select group of community leaders who care deeply about our hospital. Membership in this society means you are making a difference for those whose lives depend on the availability of top notch care, right here in our community.

We hope you will consider joining us today as a member of the Addison Gilbert Society by meeting the Dusky Leadership Challenge with a gift of your own. Your contribution, along with $350,000 from the Dusky Foundation could realize as much as $700,000 in vital support for Addison Gilbert Hospital.

Already this year, funds from the Addison Gilbert Society supported the purchase of a new CT scanner, an essential diagnostic tool that has enabled us to provide free lung cancer screenings for individuals who fit a high risk profile. We can do so much more.

To learn more about the Dusky Leadership Challenge, please call 978-236-1624.

Joe Virgilio Making the Saint Joseph Rolls

Joe Virgilio ©Kim Smith 2014 -2.This morning we continued filming for Gloucester’s Feast of Saint Joseph Film Project; today at Virgilio’s! So many thanks to Joe Virgilio for taking time from his busy, busy work day running the bakery.

Joe Virgilio ©Kim Smith 2014We talked a bit about the history of Virgilio’s, founded in 1934, and at its current location since the 1950’s. At that time, Virgilios was not only a bakery, but a full grocery store as well (before there were supermarkets) and you could purchase goods such as whole chickens and sausages.

Joe Virgilio St. Joseph Bread ©Kim Smith 2014

The Virgilios began making St. Joseph rolls in the early 1950s, specifically for the Feast of Saint Joseph and today, they make them year round. Back then, there were so many families that celebrated the Saint Joseph traditions that even as young kids, Joe and all his cousins had to hurry to the bakery after school to help their grandfather fill the St. Joseph roll orders. Now the bread is made with state of the art equipment but in his grandfather’s day it was all made by hand. Joe smiled thinking about how his grandfather would love today’s mixing and baking machines. I went home with a camera-full of stories and bag full of Joe’s bread, both generous, and much-appreciated gifts.

Virgilio’s Saint Joseph rolls are super yummy plain, with a touch of butter, or olive oil, and are even more super delicious made into one of their world-famous sandwiches!

Virgilio's ©Kim Smith 2014

In case you missed the Virgilio’s Phantom Gourmet episode, here it is:

As did Maria, Nina, and Domenic from Caffe Sicilia, Joe took time from his tremendously full work day to allow time for filming and sharing his stories. We’re so blessed to have these fabulous and welcoming bakeries/grocerias in our community. Next week, filming at Sclafani’s is scheduled!

Addendum ~ Al Bezanson writes in the comment section (see below):

“As a side note, did you know about the tradition of delivering donated fresh (sometimes warm) Virgilio’s bread to schooners as they arrive for the Labor Day Schooner Festival? When you get around schooner people you may hear them talking about the need to have extra butter aboard in Gloucester. This is a very big deal in fending off other ports that are vying for schooners that same weekend. Thanks Joe and the high speed Ramsey/Nesta delivery guys!”

THANK YOU AL for your always super helpful comments. This is information about Joe’s generosity that we would never have know without you sharing!

Greetings From Our Fred

P1000153 Fred is doing well and sends his best regards to all. He is working hard at his physical therapy and expects to be back on his feet soon. Fred is finding photo subjects, even in his small room, and will be posting some results on GMG and his Facebook page. His spirits are good and his will to get better is strong. Can’t wait to see him back behind the counter at Bodin Historic Photo.

Pipers? Plovers?

pipers

There was a time when I would have known what these were, but they are cute and there were a bunch of them on the shore at Brace Cove.  Anyone know what they are?

Neil Young, Massachusetts’ most “distinctive” artist, just might revolutionize digital music today at SXSW

A recent blog by Paul Lamere of Echo Nest (in Somerville, MA) claims to have analyzed listener data from music streaming services to determine the most “distinctive” artists by state.  His method is very interesting, if a tad wonkish (see his explanation here). Essentially the most “distinctive” artist for Massachusetts is the artist that is very popular in MA, but NOT very popular in other states — and, based on Paul Lamere’s study, that artist is Neil Young, who is scheduled to unveil his new, studio-quality music service and device called Pono, at 5pm today at South by Southwest (more here).

Artists LOVE this new sound.  Check out what they have to say in Neil Young’s Kickstarter campaign for Pono, here.  Even if Pono is a flop, the mere fact that people who make music are finally talking about good quality sound in the digital age is a major breakthrough.  Who knows where this revolution will lead, but you can say you were there (even if only via the Internet) when Neil Young Started it.

I guess we should all be proud to live in Massachusetts!  Perhaps the boys can play a little Neil Young tonight at Jalapenos in his honor!

Linquater family altar Dolores

Dolores, thank you for sharing this  beautiful photo with GMG !

The Linquater Family is a perfect example of a Sicilian Family here in Gloucester who is known to keep up family traditions throughout the year, for many generations. I have been blessed to attend many of their celebrations over the years

Old St. Joseph Altar photos are so much more than just old photos. They are priceless treasures, tangible documents, which link us back to the roots of this cultural tradition that our ancestors started many generations ago. Each photo depicts volumes of family stories and shared times together.  Yesterday while driving in the car with my twins, the topic about the importance of keeping tradition came up. My son asked me “Mah why is it so important to you to keep up the traditions that your grandparents kept?”I took a moment to gather my thought, in how to best give an example that they’d forever remember… Continue reading “The Linquata Family St. Joseph Altar From The 40’s”

Maritime Gloucester is looking for pictures of Cape Ann — specifically pictures of coves, such as Folly Cove or Brace’s Cove — for potential use as the cover photo for the reprinting of the seminal book “The Sea is All About Us”, a guidebook to the marine environments of Cape Ann and other northern New England waters. First published in 1973, it was authored by Gloucester resident Sarah Fraser Robbins and noted marine biologist Clarice Yentsch, Ph.D. The photo should be high resolution and include “sky,” in addition to the coast line, as the title of the guidebook will be printed on the photo. We can offer attribution and Maritime Glouceter membership benefits to the photographer of the chosen photo. All photos must be submitted electronically to Tom Balf at tbalf@maritimegloucester.org by this Friday, March 14th. Thanks in advance.

Sorry for followup/correction — black and white photo

Hi Joey,

The Rockport Rotary is hosting a Wine Tasting event at Cruiseport on March 28th. We would like to announce it to Cape Ann and thought you might be willing to include it on GMG  next week.  It should be a fun night and a much needed spring break from this cold winter weather.  The proceeds will benefit our community and international service projects.

Attached is a poster which provides the details on our event which include both live and silent auctions. We are moving it this year from the Shalin Liu to Cruiseport so we can accommodate more people.

Thank-you for your anticipated assistance in spreading the word.

VEGAN COOKING DEMO DRAWS A CROWD
On Saturday, March 8, vegan chef Elizabeth Reed of Rockport presented a class in cooking with winter vegetables. An avid crowd of nineteen cooking enthusiasts swarmed the kitchen of the Gloucester Unitarian Universalist Church as Reed demonstrated the preparation of three dishes: creamy roasted root vegetable soup, raw winter vegetable salad, and roasted Brussels sprouts salad with toasted spiced pecans. Students tasted all three dishes, learned about the benefits of a plant-based diet, and received plentiful recommendations for food shopping, kitchen tools, and cookbooks. The event drew cooks from Salem, Malden, and Concord as well as Cape Ann.
The cooking class was sponsored by the church’s recently formed Green Committee, which is making the church a community headquarters for information on environmentally conscious living. If you have ideas for future Green activities, please email the church atgloucesteruu@earthlink.net. For recipes and for more information on Elizabeth Reed,  visit her blog, http://elizabethruns.wordpress.com/.
