Reminder: Mug Up at Yupo Gallery this Sunday, June 22

Mug up at yupo galleryMug up at yupo gallery

Mark your calendars now.  There will be a Mug Up hosted by Regina Piantedosi at Yupo Gallery, 77 Rocky Neck Ave. Gallery 4 on Madfish Wharf on Sunday, June 22 at 9:30am.  For those of you who know the Madfish Wharf galleries, Regina Piantedosi has opened Yupo Gallery this year in the space where Gigi Mederos and Stevie Black operated Aquatro Gallery last year (next door to Khan Studio & the GMG Gallery space, which is now occupied by Sue Handman).

Regina, a lifelong resident of the North Shore and member of the Rocky Neck Art Colony for two years, has been painting for seven years, but has been a “creative” her entire life. She has lived a full and art filled entrepreneurial life writing, and working as an interior designer and florist.

Regina describes her art as a creative extension of herself, and believes each artist’s work is their fingerprint, unique to them alone. She has always been a non-representational/abstract painter, which is how she interprets her emotions.

Regina is currently using Yupo paper (hence the gallery name), a treeless synthetic product originally produced for printing. Having vast possibilities, it is resilient, eco-friendly and colors explode on it. Ink, gouache (semi-solid watercolors,) acrylic and gold leaf are her mediums of choice, and her art is created with one or any combination thereof.

Regina’s paintings are very bold, expressive and freaky (she actually has a series of paintings called “Freaks”).

A Mug Up with GMG peeps and fobs is way overdue, so plan to come on June 22nd, welcome Regina to Madfish Wharf, enjoy Rocky Neck on a Sunday morning, visit with your GMG buddies and make new friends.  Feel free to bring along something to share.  Regina will be providing coffee and a sweet bread (can’t remember what kind, but she’s Italian and married into the Piantedosi Baking family, so it will be good).  I’ll be there with deviled eggs (I know you’ve just been hankering for them).  Everyone is welcome.

Gull Cove, Rockport, circa 1930

From the top of Granite Pier, we see a lot of going on at Gull Cove. Granite cobblestones, probably from nearby Flat Ledge Quarry, are ready to be loaded onto barges or schooners. Small gauge railroad cars sit on the other side of the cove, ready to haul granite from the quarry on the other side of the Keystone Bridge. Granite Street passes over the bridge, and past the Rockport Granite Company building, which is built with granite, of course!

Art in Lanesville Student Project

Hi Joey,
Winslow Lewis and Laura Johnson have created a really nice film for James Cook’s AP English Language class at Gloucester High School called ‘At the End of the Road: Lanesville’s Artistic Legacy’. They did a really nice job and I thought it should be shared with the community. Here’s a link to the video which is hosted on Vimeo.

FISH TALES”: A FUN, NEW EXHIBIT HONORING CAPE ANN
The Local Colors Artists’ Cooperative, now in its 25th year on Main St , celebrates its annual FISH event from June 1 to July 4th with a special art exhibit titled FISH TALES. This annual event, which also coincides with St. Peter’s Fiesta, celebrates the fishing community and natural beauty of Cape Ann . The highlight of this celebration is a reception at Local Colors, 121 Main St. in Gloucester on Saturday, June 21st from 6 – 9 pm with refreshments that is open and free to the public.

This year’s theme FISH TALES captures a broad view of our fishing community and Cape Ann ‘s natural and manmade resources. Each of the 18 artists is free to interpret the theme according to their artistic calling. For special events as this, the artists are encouraged to create works outside their usual media to allow for growth and expansion of their creative talents. All the work for this event is displayed on the featured wall and in the front windows of Local Colors.

The current hours are 10am to 6pm, Sunday through Thursday and 10am to 8pm on Friday and Saturday. The members will be identified with name tags and look forward to meeting the public at the June 21st reception, but the exhibit can be viewed beginning June 1 through July 4.

Sarah Slifer Swift will present two recent works. “Insenser” (2014 premiere), named after an NSA surveillance system, takes on the human response to watching, being watched and becoming data.  “Invisible Stories” (2013) is a collaboration between Swift and Vermont-based writer and choreographer, Kate Morgan, based on the idea that “the book,” open or closed, occupies the landscapes in which we live.

As part of the “Invisible Stories” performance, an installation in one of the Windhover buildings will be on display at the start of each evening.

Gloucester Community Development / Metropolitan Planning Area Council

Hey Joey,

Back in March, the City of Gloucester’s Community Development partnered with the Metropolitan Planning Area Council (MAPC) to host the first in a series of 3 discussions about Gloucester’s railroad station and the surrounding area.  As a reminder, these interactive meetings have an extra special focus on the Railroad and Maplewood Avenue and train station area. Our input will inform the process, and there’s funding lined up.

Residents, commuters, bikers, pedestrian walking—what do you think?

Please come for some preliminary findings and recommendations at the second meeting THIS COMING MONDAY June 23, 2014, from 6PM-8PM at Kyrouz Auditorium in City Hall.

For the Railroad discussions, send in ideas and comments and/or sign up for updates on any future meetings with:
