Gloucester Community Development Department Announces Expanded Social Media Program

The City of Gloucester’s Community Development Department has expanded its social media program under the unifying theme, “Gloucester 2.0.” The program, launched earlier this year on Facebook, Twitter and now via a blog on WordPress.com, will allow the City to share stories of residents, businesses, non-profit organizations, the working waterfront, innovation and much more directly with the community and key stakeholders.

“Gloucester’s story is rich and vibrant, which makes social media the ideal platform to exchange ideas, highlight the City’s  initiatives to foster innovation on the working waterfront and across the city as well as promote our lively arts and culture scene,” said  Tom Daniel, Community Development Director. “The administration is excited by this initiative and hopes that everybody in Gloucester who uses Facebook and Twitter will engage with our program.”

The Gloucester 2.0 Facebook page will highlight event information, digital images, news and conversation about the Community Development Department’s ongoing work. The Twitter account will provide brief updates regarding upcoming events, blog posts and community news. The Gloucester 2.0 Blog will provide comprehensive insight into important Gloucester developments, undertakings and issues. The Community Development Department is committed to ensuring that Gloucester 2.0 is an immersive, interactive experience that benefits residents and stakeholders by providing useful information about City initiatives.

Residents can engage in social media programs at the following addresses:

About the City of Gloucester

America’s oldest seaport, the City of Gloucester is known throughout the world as an authentic, working waterfront community, a place of spectacular natural beauty, and home to a diverse population of about 30,000 residents. An important center for the fishing industry, Gloucester also is proud of its vibrant cultural life and rich art heritage as one of the premier art colonies in the United States. In addition, the city is a destination for thousands of visitors who visit the harbor and its beaches during the summertime. In recent years, Gloucester has been actively diversifying its traditional maritime economy, adding leading small research institutions such as the UMass Amherst Large Pelagics Research Laboratory and the Ocean Alliance to the array of local businesses and state and federal agencies working in the city. Recent advancements in Gloucester include new investments in marine robotics and new product development from the fishery.

New Film: Mark Allen ~ Sunday 2014 Greasy Pole Champion Walking for Loved Ones

Mark Allen Walking for Loved Ones

Congratulations to Mark Allen, the 2014 Sunday Greasy Pole Champion! This was Mark’s first win, after 16 previous years of walking! Allen was walking for his cousin Peter “Black” Frontiero who has the second most wins of all time, with a total of nine.

Each year I look forward to filming and photographing the greasy pole events. The determination on the men’s faces, the camaraderie, the ecstasy and pride in winning, the anguish of defeat, the hilarious costumes, and the Felliniesque antics combine to create a fabulous fiesta of stories and images.

The film opens at the childhood home of the Giambanco Family, with Sefatia leading the Greasy Pole Walkers and guests in the rallying “Viva San Pietro,”  the cheer that is heard throughout the city of Gloucester during Saint Peter’s Fiesta. Giambanco sisters Marianne, Grace, Rosaria, and Sefatia continue with their mother Rosalia’s, “Lia’s” custom of feeding the Greasy Pole Walkers dinner before the walk. The tradition began years ago when their brother, Anthony “Matza” Giambanco, began walking. Sefatia explains that Lia had always held a huge family feast with relatives from all around the country attending. The first year her brother walked he told his mom he couldn’t eat because he was meeting everyone. She said I don’t care; you have to eat, and told him to bring everyone back to their home. That was in 1978!

Next the Walkers head over to rally at the Gloucester House, where they greet Lenny shouting his name over and over, to a packed restaurant full of guests. Several more stops are made along the way before the next rally at the Saint Peter’s Club. The Walkers make one last stop to say a prayer to Saint Peter, and perhaps pin a gold charm or coin to the statue, before departing for the greased pole platform at Pavilion Beach

With special thanks and appreciation to Nicky Avelis and all the Greasy Pole Walkers for allowing me to ride on the boat. It went by way too fast! And thank you to the skipper for giving me a ride back to shore.

With thanks and appreciation to Rosaria, Sefatia, Marianne, and Grace for inviting me to come film the Walker’s rally at your welcoming Fiesta Sunday Feast!

The song “Love Runs Out,” is by OneRepublic for the reissue of their third album, Native.

The song “The Walker” is by Fitz and The Tantrums from the album More Than Just a Dream.

Slip Sliding Away

The “lighthouse” at the end of the harbor breakwater on Bearskin Neck in Rockport has precariously tumbled away from its perch.  Even though I live right down the street and go by this often by boat, I’m not sure exactly when this happened.  Anyone?

I've fallen and can't get up

Rockport Flaming Inferno

Hi Joey,

Another year, another inferno. I repeat myself, but this event is an under publicized gem that never fails to impress. I brought more friends this year from

faraway, over-the-bridge towns, and they returned home with with stories to tell their families.  “The top of the pile was sixty feet tall.”  “The fire singed the lens of the Hubble Telescope.” True, of course, and I believe I saw Vulcan with his hammer, but I believe the real story lies in the community that has created this supremely playful night.
