Coast Guard Gloucester to the Rescue! 03/30/2015

Coast Guard Gloucester to the Rescue! 03/30/2015

BOSTON — Coast Guard search and rescue crews from Station Gloucester, Air Station Cape Cod and the Coast Guard Cutter Ocracoke rescued nine crewmembers from the Canadian tall ship Liana’s Ransom 58 miles east of Gloucester, Monday.

Watchstanders at the Sector Boston Command Center received notification at 12:35 a.m. that the vessel’s engines were disabled and its sails were wrapped around the mast.

As the weather deteriorated, and seas reached nearly 10 feet, Sector Boston launched two 47-foot motor lifeboat crews from Station Gloucester to tow the vessel back to Gloucester. Once on scene, the boat crews connected the tow, but the rough sea conditions caused the tow line to break.

The motor lifeboats crews directed the crew of Liana’s Ransom to don immersion suits and to prepare to abandon ship about 30 miles east of Gloucester and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk Helicopter from Air Station Cape Cod was diverted to assist.

The nine passengers were transferred from Liana’s Ransom to the Coast Guard motor lifeboats. One man suffered a head injury when leaping from Liana’s Ransom and was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital by the Jayhawk helicopter crew.

The Station Gloucester crews returned to the station with the eight remaining crewmembers. A locator beacon was left on Liana’s Ransom for tracking and the Coast Guard Cutter Ocracoke is en-route to evaluate towing the vessel to port.

“It was fortunate for the crew of the vessel that the owner reached out to us,” said Jay Woodhead, the command duty officer at Sector Boston’s Command Center. He said with winds gusting to 30 knots, it was unsafe for them to stay aboard.

TAH-DAH, Spring….and Roy Moore Lobster Co.

Marlin and I came upon a sight for sore eyes this afternoon on our walk through Rockport.

We were both pretty excited to see the one and only Kenny Porter…and crew…wrapping up the official Day #1 of the 2015 season at Roy Moore Lobster Co.   Fantastic!

Now we just need Helmut’s Strudel and an ice cream joint or two to open up and we can get on with our happy warmer weather lives.  Winter is over and signs of spring are everywhere!

More Reasons to Get Fit Gloucester!

A Study Showed that Fit Middle Aged Men Were Found to Have Lower Risk of Colon and Lung Cancer!

In the news, March 26th… a study published on-line by the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Medical Association/JAMA Oncology showed a link between cardiovascular health and a decreased incidence of  colon and cancer.

These findings were first presented June 2, 2013 at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting in Chicago, Ill. The lead researcher, Dr. Susan Lakoski* reported at that time, “While poor fitness is already known to predict future cardiovascular disease, this is the first study to explore fitness as a marker of future cancer risk prognosis,” (*Susan Lakoski, M.D., assistant professor of medicine and director of the cardiovascular prevention program for cancer patients at the University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health Care.)

Cape Ann TV Lunch and Learn

Cape Ann TV Announces It’s Next

Lunch & Learn Event
“Online Marketing: The New Rules for Business”

Presentation by: Hans Riemer, President of Market Vantage LLC

(Gloucester, MA) – Cape Ann TV (www.capeanntv.org), a regional non-profit local access television station that serves all of Cape Ann, is pleased to announce the next learning experience in the popular “Lunch & Learn” series – “Online Marketing: The New Rules for Business”to be held on April 8th, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at Cape Ann TV (38 Blackburn Center, Gloucester MA 01930).

You need effective online marketing if you’re going to grow your business, but there are many roads you can take. Assuming you already have a website, you can attract visitors with ads through Google, Bing, LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter just for starters. Then there’s SEO, social media and email, blogs and media buys.

Where do you start, and what should you expect for results? Can you do it yourself or assign this job to someone on your team? Should you hire an in-house expert or an outside agency to help you? Can your website designer do the job?

While each organization’s situation is different, there are some basic strategies every company should master. In this presentation, we will take a management view and separate the truth from the myths and rumors. We’ll highlight important trends and help you focus in the promising, challenging world of Internet marketing.

About the presenter: Hans Riemer has over 30 years of domestic and international experience working in marketing and sales for business-to-business technology companies – from startups to members of the Global 500.

As founder and President of Market Vantage over 10 years ago, Hans specializes in helping organizations develop and implement effective Internet marketing strategies that make a positive impact. Market Vantage optimizes organic search rankings, manages online advertising and continuously measures the results to reduce costs and improve ROI.

An Objective Android / apple Product User Gives Apple A Clear Win In This Category…

Disclosure- I’m an iPad owner (which I love), an LG G3 Android cell phone user (which I love), and a Windows PC user (Love Windows 7, Not a Fan Of Windows 8)

A couple of years ago Apple decided to change their charging/data cable to the current lightening cable.  At the time people everywhere who owned previous generation Apple products suddenly were going to have many Apple peripherals  that would be rendered obsolete once they upgraded to the new connection type.  I’m sure that it was a difficult decision but one that Apple designers knew was going to make the connection more stable and secure.

image

So now being on my third android phone and this isn’t just android products, it’s more the connection type- every android phone I’ve used within a year of the upgrade the charging cable connection becomes loose and I have to wiggle and place the phone just right and often times it beeps back and forth signaling I have a connection to the charger and then not a connection to the charger and then a connection.  It is maddening and now that I’m on the third phone using this type of connection I see it is not the phone as much as it is the connection type.

In any case, Apple’s lightening cable is without question a superior form factor.

So there you go from an objective android/apple user.  Has anyone else had similar experiences with micro usb charging cables (the charging cable used for android phones)

Good news in Gloucester Schools From Aria McElhenny

Hi joey-
Wanted to share some good things happening in the Gloucester Public Schools. Local artists are visiting every school in the district to do amazing hands-on art projects with kids. The Artistic Bridges program is funded by Gloucester Education Foundation and coordinated by Cape Ann Museum. Kids are getting to learn about what it’s like to be a professional artist, and schools are connecting with the artistic community in a great new way. And everyone’s having FUN!

loren_doucette_westparish

Painter Loren Doucette is working with West Parish second graders to create the “ABC’s of Gloucester.” The students are drawing Gloucester landmarks beginning with every letter of the alphabet that will be pulled together to make a collaborative art piece. Can’t wait to see it!

Hans_pundt_eastglo

Collage Artist Hans Pundt is working with East Gloucester students to create personal collages. The kids are collecting objects and pictures that represent themselves and their heritage to make self portrait collages.

Sculptor Andy Cunningham visited Plum Cove Elementary to show how Gloucester granite can be turned into beautiful artwork.

When the Cat’s Away

Anyone recognize this guy?  Circa 1987/1988.

For the record, while appreciating that amazing head of hair and thinking, “Just what would I call that awesomeness if I wanted to head to my local barber/hair dresser and get that done this very second?” he, himself, describes it like this

It’s more of a Power Mullet, than a mud flap…or perhaps the “Richard Marx” / “Simon LaBonn”

Tee Hee.  I laugh, but it is really quite impressive.  I was a junior in High School then.  My girlfriends and I might have stalked his locker if we went to school together.
