In 2014, 731 lives were saved here in New England because of the generosity of individuals who became organ donors. Thousands more lives were enhanced through the gift of tissue donation. With the need for life-saving transplants growing every day – over 123,000 patients are now on the US transplant wait list – it is crucial to educate our communities about taking action to register as donors. The celebration commemorates those who have received or continue to wait for lifesaving transplants as well as the families of individuals who chose to be donors.
There are now 110 million registered donors in the United States; still, the number of people in need of transplants continues to rise. The solution to this problem is to continue educating the public about the lifesaving effects of donation and transplantation and encouraging them to sign up through their state donor registry. “The state plays an important role in this process as vast majority of individuals in Massachusetts (99%) register to be an organ and tissue donor at the Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV)”, stated Matt Boger of New England Organ Bank.
About New England Organ Bank: New England Organ Bank is the federally-designated, non-profit procurement organization responsible for the surgical recovery of organs and tissues for transplant throughout the New England region. This Sunday (4/19) at 9AM, Aurelia Nelson welcomes 80s rocker Martha Davis, founder of The Motels, to her North Shore 104.9 radio show “Curtain Up” for a spirited interview about what it’s like to be “the most charismatic female performer in rock,” as described by Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times.
Martha Davis is credited with helping to define the New Wave sound that dominated MTV and pop radio in the 1980s.
But she’s not one of those rockers who’s satisfied to live off her prior success. She’s still writing new songs, recording new music and discovering new talent, like Boston Music Award Winner Ruby Rose Fox who opens The Motels show down the road at The Larcom Theatre on Wednesday (good seats still available, especially in the balcony — get them here.)
And she’s about to release a film of her live performance at the 50th anniversary of the famed Whisky-A-Go-Go, where she changed the face New Wave music forever. Check out the trailer here:

Today is my last day of Radiation Oncology at the Lahey Hospital in Peabody, and I get to ring the ship’s bell at the completion of the program. It was a long daily (12x) trek from Rockport for treatment, made all the more pleasant by my (now) great friend Rocky, who took this photo. I’ll miss talking to the young man after my morning pickup, about our lives, current news, and future fishing/clamming trips. He’ a truly outstanding young man.

I have an opportunity for an ‘evidence-based’ research grant. I am looking for a Cape Ann healthcare facility or school to collaborate with on a pilot study. Please contact me if you have an interest in research.
What exactly does ‘evidence-based’ mean?
According to the American Holistic Nurses Association, “evidence based practice (EBP) is the conscientious use of the best available evidence combine with the clinician’s expertise and judgment and the patient’s preferences and values to arrive at the best decision that leads to high-quality outcomes.” (Dossey, B.; Keegan, L. (2013.) Holistic Nursing: A Handbook for Practice. 6th Edition. Burlington MA: Jones and Barrett Learning.)
Once known as the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM,) there has been a name change to reflect the current trend in healthcare to use a more ‘integrative’ approach to healthcare.

In the past few days, I have heard some wood frogs, spring peepers, seen a few spotted salamanders. So far, we are not exactly having the Big Night experience you may have heard about, but the Big Trickle effect you may be fasmiliar with if you’ve done this for a few years. But, I think there will be some good action in some of our pools tomorrow night… so:

CAPE ANN CHAMBER RIBBON CUTTING FOR THE ART OF DAVID ARSENAULT
ROCKPORT, Massachusetts – On Saturday, April 11, 2015, at 4:00 p.m. the Cape Ann Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony at the grand opening for The Art of David Arsenault. The ceremony took place at the new gallery location at 26 Bearskin Neck in Rockport, MA.
Gallery owners David Arsenault and Sue Koehler-Arsenault introduced the gallery to a crowd of spectators and celebrated by cutting the ribbon before welcoming the public into their beautiful gallery. Refreshments were served and live music serenaded the many guests who visited and viewed the artwork in the two-story gallery space.
Arsenault’s work is best known for large shapes, dramatic lighting, and strong color, which creates a compelling sense of mood, time, and place. Each piece presents a quiet exploration of everyday life.
The Art of David Arsenault will be open seven days a week on Bearskin Neck for the 2015 season.
Hey Joey,
Not sure if you saw this article last fall in Boston’s CBS local (linked below), but pretty cool that we can make such big headlines for such a small town! Would love if you could share this as we enter our 37th season this Saturday! Our trip leaves at 1:30 – Reports from fishing boats that whales are around. Thanks a lot!
