From personal experience, the Swells aren’t big fans of anyone in the media pointing out to the sweaty masses how fantastic Lighthouse Beach is. The writer of this article may just want to hide out in a bunker til summer is over because if any New Yorkers find their way to Lighthouse Beach they might send a hit squad to take out the author who had the audacity to tell people about this gem of a location which may or may not be able to be found on the map below…
Schooner Challenge and Luncheon to Benefit the Phyllis A Marine Association

Kick off a year of celebrating the Phyllis A‘s 90th Anniversary with a day of fun and food!
Join the crews of the Schooner Thomas E. Lannon and Schooner Ardelle as each ship’s captain challenge their teams to knot tying, sail raising, a sea chantey sing-off, and more!
Following the sail, join us for a luncheon in the Gloucester House function hall (Seven Seas Wharf, Gloucester, MA). Special tickets are available for those who can only join us for lunch. Luncheon begins at 1pm.

HI Joey, Sharing this picture with your readers of American Heroes. All are veterans. Picture was taken ten years ago at my husbands 80 Birthday Party on Halloween 2004. Bob Beard, Gordon Hilshey, Charlie Dickman and Tony Rao in the back row have all died. Surviving veteran of WW2 in the front row are Elmer Miller, Bob McKinnon and Joe Orange. God Bless our Heroes..

Born in Dublin to intellectual parents, Wilde was a leading light of the Aesthetics Movement, which included Whistler, Pater, Swinburne and Waugh among others, and celebrated beauty for its own sake rather than the social uplift it might provide as championed by Ruskin et alia. Better known for his incomparable satiric plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, Wilde’s sole novel was the darkly Faustian The Picture of Dorian Gray. Although very successful as an essayist and lecturer, he died penniless in France after being jailed and then hounded from England for his sexual preferences. His last words, perhaps apocryphal, as he lay on his death bed surrounded by creditors: “Well gentlemen, I seem to be dying beyond my means.”
The Society for the Encouragement of the Arts (seARTS) proudly announces its eighth year in partnership with the Bass Rocks Golf Club for the Annual seARTS Art Loan Program. This year’s show presents works by 19 regional artists at its opening reception on May 28th. The opening provides a chance for seARTS members along with the general public to view the works and meet the artists in this wonderful and picturesque setting.
The program is a year-round exhibition, showing and selling the work, and since its inception artists have sold nearly $15,000 worth of artwork through the program, netting more than $10,000 to the artists in the show. The fresh and bold work of the 2015 show balances a body of returning artists with new, introducing the space to completely new genres of work.

Among the newly enrolled artists are Charlie Carroll, Matt Cegelis, Anne Marie Crotty, Janel Houton, Eva-Lynn Loy and Marny Williams. Returning to the show from previous years are Katherine Coakley, Anne Cowman, Rob Diebboll, Susan Guest-McPhail, Mary Forte Hayes, Leslie Heffron, Michael Oleksiw, Ron Pruett, Patricia Yarborough Reed, Judy Robinson- Cox, Ruth Schneider, Deb Schradieck and Marilyn Swift.
Responsible for the show’s thoughtful and lively selection of art is this year’s jury, consisting of Manchester resident and Rockport gallery owner Bruce Johnson, photographer Paul Cary Goldberg, auctioneer and art/antiques dealer Michael March and Central Street Gallery director Alison Rowell. The jury will award honors that will be announced at the event. Awards are sponsored by Manchester-by-the-Sea’s Nor’east Frameworks, Artemis Custom Framing of Gloucester, and Hershey Frame Shop of Rockport.
Jurors Bruce Johnson, Michael March and Alison Rowell will hold a panel discussion about the art work and their selection process, followed by a question and answer session with the audience. (Paul Cary Goldberg is unable to attend.) seARTS is pleased to welcome art historian Judith Curtis as panel moderator. Judith, the author of Rocky Neck Art Colony, 1850-1950, will also give a talk: “For the Love of Light; Cape Ann as a Painter’s Destination.”
